@JamesDBartlett3 Kudos to 300 days Czech! I tried Polish and gave up before reaching 300 days, it was sooo hard.

@GreenSkyOverMe

Is #English your native language, as it is mine? #Polish and #Czech are both #Slavic languages, and I've found Czech way more challenging than the other languages I've dabbled with (#Spanish and #French, both of which are #Romance languages, and seem to have a lot in common with English in terms of their #grammar, #SentenceStructure, and largely #Latin-based lexicons).

Of course, English is primarily a #Germanic language, so the reasons why Romance languages seem easier to me than Slavic languages are probably best explained by someone who knows a lot more about #Linguistics, #LanguageHistory, and #ProtoIndoEuropean.

Calling all #Linguists and #LanguageNerds! 🤓

@JamesDBartlett3 @GreenSkyOverMe Most probably there are two factors, one more related to historical linguistics and other to sociolinguistics, the first is that English Lexicon is basically two thirds Latin based, mainly Latin words and mainly Latin words through from Old Norman French, due to Norman conquest, and that makes it easier to compare words, the second one is probably exposure, for various reasons in the anglosphere is just easier to hear romance languages (with exceptions ofc)

@Agrellagalega @GreenSkyOverMe

Fascinating! Thanks for breaking that down, I just knew that someone out there would have a good explanation. 😊

@JamesDBartlett3 My native language is German, so reasonably similar.

I did Ukrainian last year (the Duolingo course is still short) and found it doable (though not easy) … I had had some Russian in school. Then I figured why not Polish, they are our neighbors and there are plenty Polish here … but it was really difficult!
