I'm sorry, were any of you planning on telling me there used to be a species of penguin that was 6'7" (2m) tall and weighed 250 lbs (115kg) called Mega Penguin or was I supposed to just find that out on my own
@annaghughes Sorry, I did know this but thought you already knew ;)

@annaghughes I think I first heard about mega penguins from PBS Eons. Apparently there were quite a few kinds of giant penguins.

When Penguins Went From The Sky To The Sea

@apodoxus @annaghughes there he is that murderous colonising bastard the faceless British man
@apodoxus @annaghughes “If we increase the size of the penguin to the size of a man, the penguins brain is still smaller. But, and this is the point, it is larger than it *was*”!
@annaghughes but you always knew. You just open your third eye.
@annaghughes
I'm sorry. My wife is not surprised I failed yet again.
@annaghughes I looked this up as looked like science from the same school as drinking bleach, but I will make the presumption this source is boba fife https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn25990-extinct-mega-penguin-was-tallest-and-heaviest-ever/
Extinct mega penguin was tallest and heaviest ever

A fossil foot bone found in Antarctica suggests that one extinct species of penguin was a true giant, clocking in at 115 kilograms

New Scientist
@annaghughes It sounds like a Pokémon or something.
@MisuseCase @annaghughes I was coming in here to say the same thing.
@annaghughes - It was meant to be a surprise. One day you were going to open your door and there would be this honking big penguin waiting for you on the porch. But not anymore. You found out. That poor poor penguin will have to surprise somebody else, now.
@annaghughes the mega penguins asked me not to say and you don't argue with a 7 foot penguin
@annaghughes People are so inconsiderate also what
@annaghughes It was on my to do list but kept sliding to the next day. I was also going to tell you about the 10 foot tall turkeys called Dromornis in Australia too.
@annaghughes we actually all got together and said "keep this from Dr .Anna.".. There were minutes and muffins and a memo and everything
@annaghughes The description is alarmingly close to me

@annaghughes

We were all planning to tell you about #MegaPenguin ...

tomorrow.

@annaghughes so this isn't a good time to tell you about the giant elks?
@annaghughes This one is a bit smaller than that (I'm not 2m tall), but yeah.
@annaghughes Well, it was only 37-40 million years ago...so tried to avoid spoilers 😈 🐧
@annaghughes It's been there in the kernel source for ages!

@annaghughes

I suppose you don't know about the Demon Duck of Doom, either?

@annaghughes

I was going to wait until #WorldPenguinDay

But if you want to know NOW then click the link to discover the 55 million year old #penguin...

https://cosmosmagazine.com/history/largest-penguin-ever-nz/

Largest ever penguin lived in NZ 55 million years ago

The penguin would have weighed 154 kilograms and been as tall as an average human.

@annaghughes I, for one, welcome our new Penguin Overlords.
@annaghughes This information seems too important for one to keep it to oneself.
@annaghughes @mattsevits oh that’s just John, it’s just that he likes to wear a tuxedo everywhere he goes
@annaghughes What were you expecting him to be called?
@annaghughes They are still with, just evolved into maître d'.
@annaghughes if you like big bird… have you heard of the New Zealand Moa? And the humongous birds of prey they tended to get eaten by?
@annaghughes it's an easter egg, finding it is its own reward
