Turns out Shortcuts is very useful when setting up a phone for somebody to use in the hospital. Big homescreen icons to play/pause music, play certain playlists/albums, etc. No UI required. Accessibility++. I only wish apps like Photos let you pin specific photos/videos to the homescreen in the same way, or YouTube et al
New Shortcuts-powered homescreen layout for ICU 🫥

@stroughtonsmith This would be AWESOME for my granma's iPad. Big icons to Facetime us, a big widget with pictures from a shared album, and the ability to lock all of these.

Perhaps the ability to create an icon or a standalone widget from a Siri suggestion would be a great starter point.

@stroughtonsmith sending best wishes to you and your loved one
@stroughtonsmith Tom Lehrer in the ICU is the exact right approach
@stroughtonsmith sending positive wishes your way. It is inspiring to see your approach and attitude.
@stroughtonsmith Come to think of it, everyone should have a giant Tom Lehrer button. I don’t know why it doesn’t come like that
@stroughtonsmith what do you use e-mail back end?
@stroughtonsmith Thanks for sharing, even though this is clearly a challenging time for you. Best wishes.
@stroughtonsmith you can use Widgetsmith to create a photo widget with a fixed photo.
@stroughtonsmith That’s a fascinating and useful suggestion.
@stroughtonsmith Shortcut widgets are useful anytime you want easy access to anything.
@stroughtonsmith That reminds of this: https://9to5mac.com/2022/11/08/ios-16-2-custom-accessibility-mode/ Probably coming in iOS 17 then?

@stroughtonsmith if you’re in the Android world, Action Blocks is similar. And it can attach photos to the buttons. You could have a big button with your face that someone can tap on to call you.

@stroughtonsmith
Did that for my wife.

If the person has had a stroke block any phone actions during late night time hours. They often lose any concept of time and will call folks at 2AM.

@stroughtonsmith Widgetsmith can do the things you’re thinking of.

@stroughtonsmith You can use a shortcut to pin an YouTube video too!

Use the youtube:// url, with the video ID.

For example, youtube://xTc9KNZm4t8 if the YouTube link ends with /watch?v=xTc9KNZm4t8 (or /xTc9KNZm4t8 if it’s a youtu dot be link).

@stroughtonsmith I also used it for a family member who had a stroke during covid lockdown, where the iPad would not get recharged, so I made it send a message to family when battery was low, so they could call in to get it plugged in. And a shortcut to call family.
@stroughtonsmith so useful and poignant. I hope things are going okay.
@stroughtonsmith to put selected photo albums onto your Home Screen you could use https://apps.apple.com/de/app/phoddos/id1620614968. Putting just one photo into the album is of course possible.
