“once cities make the decision to reduce or remove cars, they rarely go back. No one I spoke to for this piece could name a recent sizable pedestrianization or traffic-reduction scheme that had been reversed once it had been given time to have an effect.”

People Hate the Idea of Car-Free Cities—Until They Live in One

Removing cars from urban areas means lower carbon emissions, less air pollution, and fewer road traffic accidents. So why are residents so resistant?

@BrentToderian

Well yes, a district of #Berlin did that....
(It was not a sizeable area though.)

In #Steglitz-Zehlendorf they just cancelled a pedestrian zone because drivers ignored it. 🤷‍♀️🥳🤯

@BrentToderian those who oppose this sort of thing know it better than most. That's why trials have to be opposed before the get started!
@BrentToderian we have quite a few examples in middle-sized cities in France, such as Béthune, Bergerac or Pau. But in the long run it is more about mitigating effects of car-removing policies, because pedestrianisation etc. continues in other ways.
@BrentToderian sadly the political change in London borough of Hackney saw school streets ripped apart and cars allowed back. Against the will of the immediate locals
@BrentToderian Good article, hits many key issues. It takes political courage to implement changes like this.
@BrentToderian Boulder, CO of all places reversed a pedestrianized street last year. The city council basically only listed to few businesses on the street and ignored everyone else that wanted to keep it pedestrianized.

@BrentToderian @mtsw “recent”, “sizable”, and “time to have an effect” are some great no true Scotsman ingredients…

Denver pedestrianized many blocks during COVID. Then the city just announced one day they were undoing it all.

@BrentToderian I want to see all cities car free. Our walking group were in Vienna’s Prater Park and were shouted at by two men sitting alone in their huge metal boxes, telling us we should be pushed in single file on a narrow path because he wants the road to himself.
@BrentToderian For those who want to spend more time on their bikes and increasing their daily steps, they want to feel safe doing so. As soon as bike riders and pedestrians mix with moving vehicles the risk of injury goes up. In my community it is difficult to walk and cycle distant from vehicles because this place was designed for cars. Cyclists and pedestrians are mostly an after-thought. Creating bike lanes and safer pedestrian lanes is expensive & difficult in this setting. Love your work!
