“once cities make the decision to reduce or remove cars, they rarely go back. No one I spoke to for this piece could name a recent sizable pedestrianization or traffic-reduction scheme that had been reversed once it had been given time to have an effect.”

People Hate the Idea of Car-Free Cities—Until They Live in One

Removing cars from urban areas means lower carbon emissions, less air pollution, and fewer road traffic accidents. So why are residents so resistant?

@BrentToderian For those who want to spend more time on their bikes and increasing their daily steps, they want to feel safe doing so. As soon as bike riders and pedestrians mix with moving vehicles the risk of injury goes up. In my community it is difficult to walk and cycle distant from vehicles because this place was designed for cars. Cyclists and pedestrians are mostly an after-thought. Creating bike lanes and safer pedestrian lanes is expensive & difficult in this setting. Love your work!
