The picture was taken by a plane passenger as they passed over the burning chemicals from the #ohio train derailment.
@JDS NARRATOR: Authorities were soon able to track down the passenger, arrest them with charges of intentional harm and tortious interference against multiple major corporate and industrial lobbying donors. Efforts to get the image stricken from the internet commenced.
@brianstorms @JDS
The rail company is calling for the death penalty for anyone who posts “damaging” photographs. Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas is expected to issue his solo ruling soon.
@BratschCbra @brianstorms @JDS
It was over-the-top humor regarding the U.S. train cars that derailed and spilled very dangerous vinyl chloride in a Pennsylvania town. Rather than pay for safer braking systems, the rail company spent the $ on a $10 billion buyback of their stocks.
@JDS That is concerning 😳

@JDS

And yet this is not the top headline in any news cast. MSM pretends "there's nothing to see here".

@JDS Just another corporate crime against humanity courtesy of the United Corporations of America.
@JDS its ok i heard theres nothing in ohio

@JDS I don’t doubt this is the case, but I don’t see this sourced anywhere. I found a Reddit post that referenced a tweet that has been deleted. Do we know where this photo actually came from?

UPDATE: Snopes says it seems to be real

@TimH
The tweet is where I first saw this. A couple hours later it was on Redditt.
@JDS i am also confused by the minimal coverage in the news
@pandora
It seems to get good local coverage here. But the poisons are in the Ohio River. It flows right past us. Our drinking water comes from there.
@JDS Does not look like safe air to me. BTW - thanks to the GOP for weakening federal rules for train brakes. #eastpalistine
@JBShakerman
Down the road from me is the Raceland rail yard. During WW2 there were hundreds of tracks loaded with cars being repaired. They were still hiring when I graduated HS in 1978. Through friends and family of friends I might have known 200 people who worked there. Now I know one. It is his weekend job as gate guard.
@JDS
Funny how my city rationalized that we're safe because we get our drinking water from the Kentucky River, which empties into the Ohio. No mention of where we get our air, or what happens when it rains.
@sysfrank
Our water comes out of the Ohio River. We have had our share of chemical spills over the years. Plus the coal slurry from failed ponds up on the Tug Fork.
@sysfrank @JDS Saw a picture of a guy’s car after driving through the downwind air. Looks like chemicals left speckles in plastic and finish.
@JDS @ChazBrenchley Barsoomian astronomers no doubt staring and speculating on the new blue-black spot that has appeared on Jasoom.
@JDS That's like movie villian symbology there...

@JDS

Ive seen less frightening horror movies.

@kevinrns
All of it is coming down river towards me and beyond.

@JDS

I have no idea who to ask, or how fast, or far to run. Take no risks you can avoid. So sorry.

@JDS this is a #PublicHealth #disaster that will move through #atmosphere across the US. #No #accountability by #NorfolkSouthern #EastPalestine #Ohio needs our assistance. #disasters occur in the US all the time but do not generate the media, attention and #financial support or #local #state and #federal action they merit. #toxic #events are #routine. #EnvironmentalDisaster #pollution #FEMA #accountability

@JDS THIS is a picture of what republican deregulation does to our society and to the planet.

DAMN IT #voteblue

#liberal #politics #uspolitics #ohio

@wiseguyeddie @JDS

Railroads are highly, highly regulated…

@volkris the point was that THIS is what republican deregulation looks like
@JDS Got a source link for the provenance of this image? It may indeed be genuine, but how can we know for sure?

@JDS Thanks, though that specific image isn’t in that story.
Does Photo Show Airplane View of Smoke Clouds from Ohio Train Derailment?

We looked into the origins of a popular Reddit post that claimed to show a view of the disaster from above the clouds.

@funcrunch @JDS Thank you. I had meant to check Snopes.
@dsilverman @funcrunch @jason @JDS Snopes has since updated its rating to “True” based on other photos of the same smoke clouds, a news interview with one of the photographers, and satellite imagery. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/airplane-smoke-clouds-ohio-train-derailment-photo/

@civicDetroitDan thanks, it looked like it could swing either way, but I did favor “this seems possible”

Just don’t really like people throwing stuff to the wind without citations of where the hell they came from…

@JDS: What's the scale of the black cloud? What keeps it so compact?
@riley
From what I read, the particulates in the cloud displaced the cloud cover eventually disbursing downwind.

@JDS Just wanna point out that many of my friends, family, and colleagues here in Pittsburgh have noticed a lot of air quality issues and allergy irritation in the past couple days

A lot of people are blaming the sudden change in weather, but I'm willing to bet that the consequences of this train wreck just west of us are farther-reaching than a lot of people realize.

@JDS It turns out that the trainwreck is only about 30-35 miles away from my work as the crow (and pollution) flies. It's only about 50 or so miles away from Pittsburgh proper.
@d1pl0mat
I have been following the story. Scary, that stuff goes by on the tracks 600' away and 300' below me.
