Is there something like the #cybiko based on #arduino or #esp32's?

I wish there where a low-cost handheld that can transmit messages via radio like that today

@syaochan Wow that's a cool device. It seems to do even more than I need but maybe it can be simplified to keep the cost down

@pinpox

Somethink like Meshtastic?

https://meshtastic.org/

Meshtastic

An open source, off-grid, decentralized mesh network built to run on affordable, low-power devices

@sabutilnik Thats looks cool, but if I understand it correctly you still need a "companion app" on your phone, which kinda negates the whole purpose of the thing, doesn't it?
@pinpox Yes, you need an app on the phone and no, it does not negate the whole purpose of the thing. Meshtastic is a lora mesh where any lora device can communicate with the others and can work as a proxy, you do not need a telephone network to operate.
You can use your mobile for sending messages through this devices or you can use your laptop, you only need a serial console connection through usb.
@sabutilnik Thanks for explaning! I also saw there is a standalone Meshtastic device called #Meshenger, might check that one out. It seems to be the same device, just with a small #cardkb #keyboard added

@pinpox so basically a two-way #pager?

- Consider #LoRa / #Meshtastic or your combo of #RTLSDR & #CB portable radio with #AFSK on FM for truly low tech!

@kkarhan @pinpox there are apps (like flaresat) that can work on top of #meshtastic using it as communication layer.

@spitfire @pinpox granted, #AFSK can be done on any medium with bandwith to do audio and #SSTV decoder & -encoder #Apps are quite common...

- Similarly #RadioFax can be implemented...
