Yay, my ACARS receiver is working again after replacing the powered USB hub.
ps. dirty or clouded windows on the outside of a plane, although not a safety hazard or anything, are a great annoyance to me. You're at 35,000 feet and there's a SMUDGE on that window and you want to take a picture of something....
A very interesting use for those #rtlsdr #sdr dongles: Listen to what your heat cost allocators, water meters etc. are talking all day. And graph it.
Hint: They're really chatty.
And the stuff is surprisingly easy to setup with cheap dongles, i.e. former #DVB-T/ #DAB dongles.
And what is even more impressive: Those little things can do proper #AES...who would've thunk.

Nice, the #rtlsdr dongle came in today. It is recognised by the software on the #raspberrypi so that looks promising.
The (indoor) antenna is expected to arrive tomorrow, so no #ADSb tracking just yet.
Das sieht doch schonmal ganz gut aus. Besonders cool ist, dass auf der Karte nach einer Weile die Abdeckung angezeigt wird. Da unser Arbeitszimmer nach Norden ausgerichtet ist, ergibt das auch halbwegs Sinn. Feeder für ADSB-Exchange fehlt noch.

Over on YouTube, The Thought Emporium channel has uploaded a video outlining how mobile phones constantly leak unique IMSI identifiers over the air, making passive location tracking much easier than most people expect. While LTE and 5G improve security, older 2G and 3G protocols still expose permanent subscriber IDs that can be collected and linked to movement over time. The video highlights how accessible this surveillance is. A cheap RTL-SDR USB dongle, basic antenna, and free software pre-installed on DragonOS are enough to passively collect IMSI numbers from nearby phones running on 3G.
