It has struck me repeatedly during the #BLM-debate that they really don't care about white lives at all, what they DO care about is that black lives don't matter. They seem willing to sacrifice many a child, white or otherwise, on that stupid, racist altar.

@SuneAuken @QasimRashid What gets me is their "concern" over white students' discomfort in history class. Who takes personally the atrocities of the long-dead--or more recent villains for that matter? When I was a kid, I saw the picture of Emmett Till in his open casket. As a black child who worried about encountering quicksand in a Midwestern city, thanks to movies & one who was tormented by older kids w scary stories, I never thought the monsters who murdered Till would come for me.

True. And a very good point indeed.

I know we have plenty of problems with bias and inherited racism, some of which we don't even realize (me too, I'm sure).

But if as a white person you look at historical racist atrocities and instead of thinking "we need to stop this from ever happening again!" think "why are they speaking ill of me?" - then I have some fairly basic questions for you.

@QasimRashid While I agree that something has to be done about done about school shootings, look at a city like Baltimore where there are over 300 people murdered and hundreds more injured by guns, (the vast majority by illegal guns) and nothing is being done about it. (So I blame the Democratic government just as much)

@Refoel @QasimRashid The most violent counties per person are all in the south, often rural. But you only look at absolute numbers of cities and not a per person breakdown which gives a wildly bad understanding of the numbers. Its like how welfare has only a 3% inefficiency rate which is mind-blowingly small for any institution but since its the welfare budget of the richest nation in the world the absolute number is mind-blowing. They also only talk about cities because you are more likely to think democrat and ignore the damage republicans are doing. Poverty in the south keeps their people less educated and easier to control and they have been doing that since jim crow. Then you have the issue that say Chicago has the strictest gun laws but is right next to Indiana with some of the most lax, so unless its implemented nation-wide it ain't going to work but the right just uses chicago as a reason why gun control doesn't work.

@anubis2814 @QasimRashid @Refoel I moved from a deep red small town to the border to feel safe in my home. Idiots in the rural areas are killing each other. In my former neighborhood alone (in a town of 4000 people) there were 3 stand your ground shootings in two years (all within a few miles of my rural home). Two people were killed. It never made the local news. They don't report it when they kill their own. Small price to pay I guess for absolute power and owning the libs.

@Refoel You seem to not understand that gun laws need to be federal for meaningful enforcement. What are Dems supposed to do about illegal guns from out of state? Set up a checkpoint and lock down the city? There's a reason why red states have a 40% higher murder rate than blue states. It's b/c GOP refuses meaningful gun safety legislation. Let's pass federal legislation first, then talk about illegal guns in cities.

@QasimRashid I think of cities like Baltimore because I live in Baltimore. As a Democrat I think they are using the gun discussion as a red herring to get our continued support. I don't own a gun, never used a gun. If criminals are buying illegal guns, we need to be willing to punish the offenders both the sellers and the buyers. Let the chips fall where they may. Long harsh sentences is the only way.

I have no problem with stricter laws as well. But they must be enforced.

@QasimRashid I have a somewhat serious question, hopefully you are not offended: being based in Europe and reading about mass shootings in the US, seeing them happening every day - aren't you at some point getting dull? For me it is incomprehensible how this can happen every day and enough people are fine with continuing freely distributing guns. Or is the situation that mostly minorities are affected who are underrepresented to actually change the law?

President Biden claims more kids are dying from guns than cars. That’s not the whole story.

A closer look at death data shows that while gun deaths are close in number to vehicular deaths, much depends on how the numbers are sliced.

All three are things we claim are unfixable while the rest of the world has managed in one way or another (and to varying degrees of success of course. But the solutions are out there)
