Well, it's Groundhog Day, again.*

“Only in America do we accept weather predictions from a rodent but deny #ClimateChange evidence from scientists.”

* I share this meme every year on February 2. Source unknown. #science

@Sheril Once the groundhogs start getting accused of being liberal, or leaning-left, or OMG Democrats-in-fur, that narrative will change.

@roadskater

👍

aren't rodents (or at least groundhogs) woke?

🤣

@Sheril
Pretty sure there's government ministers in Westminster basing crucial economic, domestic and foreign policy decisions on the random spasms of lab rats given electro-shock stimulation... So we're not that different 😃
@Sheril and once again I have to counteract this dumb meme by reminding people that weather and climate are two very different things: https://youtu.be/cBdxDFpDp_k

@edgeoforever @Sheril
They aren't different things at all.

Weather is an emergent property of climate. And an increasing incidence of extreme weather is an emergent property of climate change.
A nation's stupidity is an emergent property of policy choices that don't really value education and clear critical thinking.

-I like funny memes-

@cris @Sheril If you watch the De Grasse Tyson video, they aren't fully unrelated. But we used to have the ignorants saying: "it's so cold today, what climate warming?" A good reason to be more rigorous in our language. Imbolc, Candelmas were in the Farmer's Almanach, based on years of experience.
@cris @Sheril it’s not pure superstition. It’s the astronomical middle of the winter, and in parts of the world observations led to rites.
@Sheril to be clear, lots of other people do the hibernating animal as spring warden thing. It’s very old. It’s the science denial that makes us exceptional.
@gewalker @Sheril nah, science denial is going on all over the place. The US may be leading the field, however. Followed closely by Glastonbury.

@FakePlasticDunk @Sheril so, to make my creds clear such as they are: I was raised Brethren in the southern US, including a hearty dose of both “young earth” creationism and “flood geology.”
@FakePlasticDunk @Sheril I am also the author of the highest rated answer to (roughly) “is earth 4.5 billion years old or 6000 years old” on quora (for whatever that’s worth).
Do you believe that the Earth is 4.5 billion years old according to science, or 6000 years old according to the Bible?

Gary Walker's answer: It’s a mistake to say that the earth is 4.5 billion years old. It is a mistake, because this is not, in point of fact, what scientific inquiry tells us. Science tells us that some minerals on earth are at least 4.031±0.003 billion years old. Further inquiry tells us that som...

@FakePlasticDunk @Sheril and the idea I’m left with is that science denial is something in the brains of most people. They just don’t work that way.
@FakePlasticDunk @Sheril meh. That’s life. We all get dealt different hands. It’s a fundamental mistake to, a priori, assume you know someone which is wired into us from a time when “strangers” were a great deal more rare.
@gewalker @Sheril And a Happy Badger Day to you too!
@Sheril: If only there was a groundhog furry who also happened to be a climate scientist ...
@Sheril how it works is a NOAA satellite passing Punxsutawney at an angle tangential to the sunrise uses high-resolution microsatellite cameras such as The Dragoneye (HR-250) from Dragonfly Aerospace to determine the precise angle and luminescence of the cast shadow. Meanwhile, ground cameras armed with Automatic Rodent-eye Covalence Tracking Intent Capabilities (ARCTIC) feed a proprietary algorithm trained on data about how much wood could a wood chuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck wood

@Sheril In the realm of non-human weather forecasters I prefer to go with the Woolly Bear Caterpillar.

Woolly Bear Caterpillars and Weather Prediction

Learn about the woolly bear caterpillar and how they are used to forecast winter weather. The Old Farmer's Almanac investigates woolly bears as weather predictors.

@Sheril Of course they do. The Groundhog tells people what they want to hear, 50% of the time.
@Sheril and of course Bill Murray come to find out is quite a creep,the list Chucky Doll Limbaugh looking shot says it all
@Sheril to be honest, it's practically granted that a country that accepts weather predictions from a rodent is bound to deny #science.

@Sheril So true. Now in US we have politicians deciding history and science with a court that figures that states can figure things out better than DC.

Did you know that the crack in the Liberty Bell was from a ray gun fired by the Russian Czar from Moscow in 1776? Pass it on.

@Sheril this was one of the best scenes of the howl movie

@Sheril Very likely nonsense won't ever win a cup taking on science.

@Sheril For #science ’s and #climatechange ‘s sake, would all #US #scientists please dress up as a #hedgehog and get their message out ☺️?
@Sheril never goes out of style! Thanks.
@Sheril A groundhog doesn't have the 100s of millions of dollars in fossil fuel money and dishonest politicians working toward denying Groundhog Day.
@MarkRuffalo @Sheril clearly this implies the existence of a Groundhog Illuminati

@Sheril

@Sheril

Bring on Climate Change Chuck!

If prophets for planetary change must come in the form of rodents, then that is what me must do.

#science #GroundHogDay #climatechange #globalwarming

@Sheril Well in their defense, the groundhog is more fun... 🤔

@Sheril Today I learned they do this in Canada as well. I had no idea.

In a perfect example of Canadian confederation, groundhogs in Ontario, Nova Scotia, and Quebec proclaimed: - early Spring - late Spring - and in Quebec, the groundhog abstained (died)

@Sheril to be fair, 6 more weeks of unstable weather is an accurate prediction.
@Sheril Now if only we can get the rodent to tell them #ClimateChange is real and a dire consequence, so that they will accept that and do something about it.
@Sheril The Biden administration is not ignoring climate change and ignoring the billions and billions of dollars he’s targeted to be spent across government to transition the US to a renewable energy is also irresponsible and very bad for climate change.
@Sheril ground hog day is ridiculous since winter is over when winter is over. #dontmesswithmothernature
@Sheril and each UN Climate Conference is like (to quote Yogi Berra) deja vu all over again.

@Sheril

Well please stop sharing it. “We” don’t accept a groundhog’s weather predictions, and “we” don’t deny climate science. Only the GOP does.

@Sheril
and here I thought it was just a merecat

@Sheril

Speaking of listening to scientists about the #ClimateEmergency, yesterday @ScientistRebellion and others had a global day of action targeting private jet travel (including myself!)
