Evolution of Smart Products cartoon - Marketoonist | Tom Fishburne

One of the most popular cartoons I ever drew was about the Internet of Things, right after Google announced the acquisition of Nest in early 2014. “I think my Nest smoke alarm is going off,” one character tells another. “Google Adwords just pitched me a fire extinguisher and an offer for temporary housing.”

Marketoonist | Tom Fishburne - Marketoonist is the thought bubble of Tom Fishburne. Marketing cartoons, content marketing with a sense of humor, keynote speaking.
@baekdal There is way too much unneccessarily smart products nowadays. The manufacturers of them should at least make it so they are usable when the "smart" functionality breaks!
@baekdal the toastmeister - my husband does not cook much, but he does make a mean toast.
@Invincible_Fall @baekdal
And that's the point with smart products: hubby/ butler/ the guy in the café around the block from your office (select as appropriate) just _know_ if we want toast today and on occasion slide in a slice of raisin bread to make our day excellent. No smart product will be able to come near that level of understanding our bread-based needs! *leaves to make a thick slice of buttered toast*
@baekdal
The talking toaster in Red Dwarf is great.
@scotclose @baekdal Yeah Toastie rocks! "Aaah, so you're a waffle man!"

@jeffpc @baekdal One of the Red Dwarf scenes I know pretty much word for word. 😆
@jeffpc @baekdal
Toastercide 😂😂😂😂
The accent just makes it funnier.
@baekdal
Glad you proposed a toaster... I'l drink to that.
@baekdal The urge was irresistible, I apologize for my crimes
@baekdal tbh the data-driven one doesn't sound half bad
Unauthorized Bread: Real rebellions involve jailbreaking IoT toasters

Cory Doctorow's book, Radicalized, is up for a CBC award. To celebrate, here's an excerpt.

@wesdym @baekdal I was hoping someone had linked that.
@baekdal
Just give me the darned toast!

@baekdal

Coincidentally I posted a blog today that included the video of your last "product" 🤣

@baekdal smuckers? That would have been topical. No it would be some idiotic ad for something I loath.
@breadbin @baekdal based off your shopping history, most likely adverts for more toasters

@baekdal

I had a smart TV once and I hated it. I spent all my time watching Discovery Channel and Ted Talks because I didn't want my TV to think I was stupid.

@baekdal I still want the toaster that could burn drawings into the slices.
I want to burn my todo list into a loaf of bread, so instead of crossing things off I can eat them
@baekdal Love it! That is how I feel lately after a lifetime spent with #computers, #DataProcessing, IT and now #AI. #UGH
@baekdal I have a coffeepot I love. It has nothing but an on/off switch. Hard to find, but they still make them.
@baekdal This is also accurate:

The first 4 panels are the same
5 is replaced with “hack it”
6 is replaced with “runs doom”

@arnd @tbr You mean, ChatGPToilet is all but a lie?
@baekdal We're headed towards the $5.99/mo. one now.
I wonder what @pluralistic thinks about this.
@baekdal what is missing: Toaster stops working, because the company no longer exists…
@baekdal going off the image generators, an AI toaster would give you Nyan Cat or some hideous toaster mutant with 30 fingers. And a blog post about ten ways to enjoy toast.
@baekdal
Ha, this is perfect! It would be hilarious if it wasn't so true. This is our future...

EVOLUTION OF SMART PRODUCTS
1. Classic toaster: Makes toast
2. Wifi-enabled toaster: Makes toast after making you wait for a firmware update.
3. Data-driven toaster: Makes toast after watching how you like toast.
4. Toaster as a service: Makes toast for $5.99 a month.
5. Ad-supported toaster: MAKES TOAST AND LETS YOU KNOW THAT SMUCKERS IS ON SALE. (strawberry jam?)
6. A.I. (HAL): TOAST? IM AFRAID I CAN'T DO THAT, DAVE.

By: TOM FISH BURNE marketoonist.com

@baekdal AI: makes something vaguely toast-like with too many fingers.
@baekdal * makes toast but shames you for it
@baekdal
This is so .... soooooooooooooo good 👍.
@baekdal it seems the scenario where having the toast well done requires more expensive subscription level is missing
@baekdal Which just goes to show how stupid the whole evolutionary approach is...

@baekdal I bought a Haier stove and it was very unclear how the "wifi enabled" aspects worked. Plugged it in and my wifi told me that it was trying to access. There's no keyboard or anything on the stove but there's a QR code and there's an app which let me log on to wifi, the stove however was sending data constantly but the app wouldn't let me log in to the stove. So about 1/3 of the functions are app-only so I can't use them. A year later I have the wifi muted and I'll never buy Haier again.
@baekdal see Cory Doctorow's @pluralistic Unauthorized Bread novella,. And I think I remember another short story from him about a DRM toaster

@baekdal

Oh-ME-Goodness!

This almost made me ROTFLOL wet ME pants 😂

The Future of High Tech just isn't quite how WE imagined it back in the 40s & 50s.

Is ME right?

This is so applicable to every thing one wishes to do today from watching a show or movie to making yer next cup-O-coffee

All dem services want their *cut-O-de-action*

Fooey!

@baekdal I said 30 years ago (cough) that a coffee machine needs exactly one button. (This was when I was confronted with a monstrosity that could wake you up with a jingle and freshly brewed coffee ... if you knew how to work the utterly incomprehensible UI.)
@baekdal @pluralistic Only the first one is still making toast after 1 year. The rest are all bricked for various reasons.
@baekdal this is great, and also I know all #BattlestarGalactica fans are lamenting the missed opportunity here 😂
@baekdal "afraid I can't do that Dave " [sets fire to kitchen]
