Mass shootings in the US:

2014: 273
2015: 336
2016: 383
2017: 348
2018: 336
2019: 417
2020: 610
2021: 690
2022: 647

In the first three weeks of 2023: 39

We do not have to live like this. No other country on the planet does.

@rbreich Yes we do. Until people stop voting for Republicans. That’s all.

@rosenstand @rbreich

As a spectator of US politics from across the pond, I'm overwhelmed about the dearing hold for two party system.

40 years ago, hot topics during US presidential campaigns were abortion, gun laws and government surveillance.

As I said, I'm merely a spectator.

But I have to say I stopped making popcorn years ago.

Nowadays 2 pieces of marshmellow does the job. I stuff them in my ears.

@mastosalo @rbreich I hear you! I'm an immigrant here from Denmark. My first election in Denmark had 13 (thirteen) parties on the ballot.
@rosenstand @rbreich regardless of who you vote for the government always gets in… I think you’ll find that who people vote for would make absolutely no difference whatsoever.
@arfab @rbreich So you think that a Congress and Senate with a Blue majority and no filibuster wouldn't mean better and stricter gun laws?
@rosenstand @rbreich do you think that criminals have respect for the law?
@arfab @rbreich If you have respect for the law you’re not a criminal. Is this the level you want to debate the extreme gun violence in America on?
@rosenstand @rbreich I was trying to highlight the faulty logic in your initial statement. To answer this question - someone who has reached a point in life where they feel their only option is the shoot you a school and commit suicide isn’t really concerned with calling themselves a law-abiding citizen. In most cases they won’t waste time going and buying a gun - there are already plenty around for them to steal/use/whatever.
@rosenstand @rbreich if voting were the solution then you’re suggesting that there would be reform in both the laws surrounding sales and ownership of weapons. So who do you disarm first, the public or the cops? You can’t do one without the other as criminals will always ensure they can protect themselves against the cops. Then we can discuss how this probably contradicts the second amendment.
@arfab @rbreich Looks like the laws are working in other countries, right?
@rosenstand @rbreich sure, but you can’t simply change the way people want to live by bringing in new laws. They won’t vote for that. I could be wrong,but I’m quite sure that it’s more complex than left vs right. Are there politicians that have stated their willing to make these changes? Educate me if I’m mistaken.

@arfab @rbreich Yes - the majority of Democrats are for universal background checks etc.

But you completely ignore the fact that EVERY other "civilised" country have gun laws that dramatically reduces the amount of gun violence.

You are basically quitting - I disagree with that and I relate to factualities like numbers.

A stricter gun law will reduce gun violence - like the temporary ban on "assault riffles" did here in the US until it was removed. That's all.

@rosenstand @arfab @rbreich

Gun laws take away the right to defend yourself. The criminals will still keep the guns, and are the ones who are pushing for such laws.

Is it so hard to believe that every school shooting is designed to push for total control and the disarmament of the American people?
Please lookup the history of the FBI and CIA on this. MKUltra and many others have been declassified. They even made a movie of it recently!

@rosenstand @arfab @rbreich

The evidence us overwhelming. Its all out in the open for those who care enough to even look.

Just to name a few..

The Minds of Men

On April 13th 1953, newly appointed CIA director Allen Dulles signed off on MKUltra, the CIA's top secret mind control project. Three days before that Dulles gave a speech on the battle for mens mi...

@rbreich Does 39 count today's mass shooting in Yakima?
@CharleneTeglia @rbreich Mass shooting is 4 or more shot not including the perpetrators. Yakima was only 3.
@rbreich just keeps getting worse, not better.
@rbreich little surprise in the rise since the ultra Right leader lost his presidential bid in 2020 — they believe the violence is justified, and it feeds on itself in growing.
@rbreich Sometimes when there's another one that makes the international news I'll check out this list from The Guardian and wonder, as I'm scrolling in despair, how any country would allow this to continue.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-interactive/2021/may/27/us-mass-shootings-database
@monkeyfinger @rbreich well this looks like a good source. The visualization, human silhouettes, is powerful.
@rbreich
I feel so sorry for you all 😕
@rbreich We’re #1 We’re #1 We’re #1

@RADC @rbreich

In so many of the things ...

@rbreich but we need to ban gas ranges to protect the children!!!
@richservo @rbreich fact check: gas ranges have not been banned.
@SusanPotter @rbreich fact check. It’s a bigger priority in congress than guns.
@richservo @SusanPotter @rbreich
We should be doing both and 100's more things to protect people, but there is one party standing in the way of compassion and progress.
@richservo @rbreich ahhh, I thought you were doing a whataboutism on the "culture wars".
@rbreich @GOP Republicans love "family values" and are "prolife" as long as we're talking about a family of guns and pro gun life
@rbreich If guns are so freely available, they'll get used.
End of!
Hardly worth reporting such horrific crimes.
We can only look forward to Headlines such as:
'IN THE 12 MONTHS SINCE GUNS WERE BANNED ACROSS THE US THERE HAVE BEEN 'ZERO' MASS SHOOTINGS.'
Now that would be news and the whole World could rejoice.

@rbreich I am proud of the UK for acting decisively after Dunblane

However we have absolutely no reason to feel smug

The same cash for votes that keeps guns aplenty in the US against all reason and logic is the same money being used to dismantle our NHS before our very eyes

Rupert Murdoch needs to stand trial for crimes against humanity

@BoabieTheBarman @rbreich

I agree. And we need a #MurdochRoyalCommission in Australia.

Our worst export ever.

@BoabieTheBarman @rbreich gun laws in Scotland are even stricter than those in England and Wales. I just looked up Scotgov website - there was only one homicide involving a gun in the period 2021/22.
@rbreich as anti life as America is, not a chance they will ban assault weapons
@rbreich NRA are republican funders so never Gona change .....
@rbreich
We are right on track then for another 600+ yearly total.
Nearly 3K American have died from gunshot wounds of all kinds since 1/1/23. On track for nearly 50K gun deaths this year.

@rbreich Is there any other country where the Mean time between mass shootings measured in hours?

#GunControl #MassShootings

@snail @rbreich

There are some. Myanmar is one example.

Why does that example spring to mind, you might ask?

Because the facts of that destroy so many ignorance-dependent talking points and anti-fact presuppositions with a single link:

https://observers.france24.com/en/asia-pacific/20220114-3d-printed-weapons-myanmar-rebels

How rebel fighters are using 3D-printed arms to fight the Myanmar junta

Nearly a year after a military junta took power in Myanmar, the country’s rebels have a new tool in their hands. Photos posted on social media in early December show them armed with 3D-printed guns, a cheaper way to reinforce their arsenals and train new fighters.

@rbreich

Civil war conducted by an industry.

@rbreich Please provide the definition you are using for mass shootings. You might be unpleasantly surprised by what the FBI calls a mass shouting. Logic dictates that you can’t have a meaningful conversation if you are using the same scale. What are you using?
@davidpaige @rbreich i suspect the standard 4 or more, and as long as that definition is consistent in the list, the point kind of speaks for itself

@davidpaige @rbreich

"Mass" is defined as "A large but nonspecific amount or number", though for rather obvious political reasons someone decided four would do.

You can't have a meaningful conversation where people won't agree on consensual reality.

But, partisan politics isn't "meaningful conversation" and isn't intended to be. It's face-painted football hooligans screaming at each other.

@rbreich

It's a bit like global warming.

@rbreich
We will have to live with the perpetual #GunSlaughter often of thousands of Americans as long as there are #Republicans that put #GunIndustryProfits, and those fat #NRA delivered envelopes, over American lives.
@rbreich in my entire life, which is quite a long one, I don’t think we’ve had as many mass shootings here in the UK as the US has had since this year started. I don’t think many people in the US really grasp how much of an outlier their country is.
@JonSparks @rbreich, most of us understand this.
@Dr_Elizabeth97 @rbreich I hope you're right... I'm partly comparing this with the UK. Not over gun control, where we do have sane laws, but other things. E.g. the failure of many people (and most politicians) even now to admit that Brexit was a ghastly mistake.
@JonSparks @rbreich , the GOP represents the minority of the U.S. That is simply a fact in terms of numbers. The majority of Americans are in favor of gun control legislation. That's been a fact for years and years and not something that lots of individuals outside of the U.S. understand. It's a big mess.
@rbreich @Dr_Elizabeth97 It’s good to hear this… but what is meant by ‘gun control’? Is a majority really in favour of the situation we have in the UK (and it’s similar in many other countries), where handguns and assault weapons are basically completely banned except for armed forces and police—and here most police officers never carry a gun. And rifles and shotguns are also extremely tightly regulated.

@JonSparks @rbreich , it means a lot of things depending on how the question is asked, as is true in any survey based research.

Personally, I am in favor of the kind of laws you have in your country. However, I am not sure that is what is needed to reduce gun violence to the U.S. to a point where it is not such an outlier among countries.

In any event, I am not a gun policy expert but here are the results of a Google Scholar search if you are interested:

@rbreich because the manufacturers of guns need to make money.
@rbreich can you give the source of your data? Also what constitues a mass shooting? A shooting incident where more than one targets were involved?
@rbreich We have more mass shootings than we have days ... it's completely unacceptable.
@rbreich it’s worrying from an outside perspective
