I'm hanging out with the #Google #Search Console team for a few days. What's on your mind that you'd like to see in Search Console, or see more of there?
#seo
@johnmu a top stories filter in the performance report. 😁
@badams tell me more, what would you do with it vs the rest of search? (Other than "i just like more numbers")

@johnmu It's very useful to know what traffic to an article came from a Top Stories box (which has a high degree of volatility) versus regular blue link results (which are much more stable and less ephemeral).

It would allow for better comparisons of good vs bad performing articles, and can lead to actionable insights and better editorial habits.

Right now, Top Stories is a guessing game, left to 3rd party tools with questionable reliability.

@johnmu And.... I just like more numbers. πŸ˜‰

@johnmu Annotations!! Private annotations (account level) or shared annotations (visibile to every account that have full access).

That would be a super cool productivity feature.

@johnmu Another thing that would be super cool: the ability to bookmark custom filtered report in the main menu.

The use case: that single monster regex filter include (or exclude) that groups branded searches for that particular brand whose users gets really creative while typing on Google.

Another use case: a particular combination of keyword cluster and subset of pages that you're checking frequently.

Account level would be ok.

Shared would be great.

@martinomosna @johnmu
For the performance reports (and most other reports) in the GSC You can already use the URL to bookmark or share filter settings.
The filters are all in the query parameters and the url works for every account that may view the property.
Works like a charm for me.

@lordoflogfiles @johnmu I know! But it would be awesome to have them in the main menu as "custom reports" of a sort.

Muggles... err... clients mostly don't use bookmarks. Also Squibs OOOPS I meant non-geek colleagues don't have the habit of organizing them neatly.

A custom named report in the main menu works like a charm.

This, and the fact that filtered reports already have a permalink should make it trivial from a frontend developer standpoint.

@martinomosna @johnmu
In my experience clients and colleagues are able to reuse links, but maybe I'm lucky with my clients :D But nevertheless it's true that, the permalink should make the feature quite easy to implement.
@lordoflogfiles @johnmu I've happened to work with clients that search Google on Google. Nuf said πŸ˜‚

@johnmu

John I just wanted to say how much I appreciate you posting on Mastodon. i just popped over to Twitter and saw that the responses to your question about what would we like to see in GSC are numerous compared to the question posted here so i thought I'd let you know that it is appreciated that you post here! Please don't stop!

@simoncox I like it here :-). The challenge is that there are a lot of people on Twitter though, so somehow I need to find a way to balance. Still figuring that part out though :)
@johnmu interests (entities) in google discover performance report

@johnmu

-Exporting all URLs shown in the coverage index

-Custom alerts / warnings settings

-Agreggate clicks, impressions (from performance report) to Index Coverage data, In this way, users could weigh the importance of each URL with error

@johnmu I think a frustration that some people have is deciding to sunset / deprecate a feature based on how many people find it useful or use it (for example geo targeting / hreflang reporting) when many do although appreciate that it's a difficult balance to maintain.
@Fearless_Shultz Purely from a practical point of view, you (well, we) can't keep & maintain everything, so from time to time we have to reprioritize. Over time, I expect some things to move into a state where it doesn't take as much work from your & our side, either because the technical details are relatively easier (it's well-known, the CMS does it perfectly), or because it's possible to understand the content & context better automatically.
@johnmu the test live url feature seems incredibly slow at times, so can be a time drag where there’s a few urls to investigate.
I also liked a lot of the suggestions on Twitter, especially Montse’s which requested the ability to export all keywords for a url. I’d add that it would be good to see specific avg positions alongside each kw over the period of enquiry. The exports are often a little clunky.
@johnmu
I would like to know the detailed reasons behind Google's internals regarding these two statuses.
"Crawled - currently not indexed"
"Detection index not registered"
For example, "it will resolve itself over time", "quality issues"
Google makes "Crawled - currently not indexed" including quality and CrawlBudget, so I don't know the cause at all.
@harmo_snipe I expect most websites aren't of the size & on servers where crawl budget is a limiting factor, if that helps.
@johnmu
Sorry Japanese
Will CrawlBudget occur on small sites?
・The first image
I see amp pages that were redirected to years ago even though these are already indexed.
・Second image
Although this was indexed once, it was suddenly deleted from the index due to the crawl algorithm change in mid-October.
It is currently not indexed
I think there is a problem with the quality of the article.
If quality affects the CrawlBudget, does that mean content management is even more important than it is now?

@harmo_snipe Content management is always important!

I think one of the tricky parts of Search Console reports is that you have to interpret the data to determine if you need to make a change. You need to check if these are critical pages for your website, or if you don't care too much about them. It's not a checklist of things to fix, and maybe you don't have to make any changes (but Google can't make that decision for you :-)).

@johnmu
Thank you very much.
Most of the content is unimportant.
(Since the business site cannot be published, it has become a hobby site)
I wonder if it's indexed but not indexed can be improved a bit? Thought it was posted.

By the way, was there a big change in the crawl index algorithm in mid-October?

@harmo_snipe I don't know off-hand about October, but a lot of the quality updates that we make over time can affect crawling and indexing too. (A simplified way to see it is if Google doesn't think it's worth showing large parts of a site in search, it's not worthwhile to spend time crawling and indexing it all. But also, even for good sites, we tend not to crawl and index everything because there's just so much other content on the web too.).
@johnmu They have already this from me 1000 times, but an API for the coverage reporting. I can already hear Daniel groan when you tell him this. Hahaha :)

@johnmu
- using the same timeframe when switching between the discover/search/news
- performance overview showing traffic of all channels in stacked bar charts
- more than 1000 results

Of course: more query-data...

@johnmu

- why is the page filter still active when I switch domains?

@johnmu Search Console may show in "Performance report" the status showed in "Coverage Report" (redirection), so if a page is redirected to another. This can help prevent panic πŸ˜ƒ mainly when we notice a huge drop in click pages but we don't know yet why (changed url!)
@johnmu I want all the things in GSC but a few that immediately come to mind:
-The ability to specify brand terms and report on brand vs non-brand natively (ideally with less data sampling)!
-Shared annotations on graphs
-Native period selection dropdowns in the date filter (like in GA, last/this month, q, year etc.)

@johnmu

#CoreWebVitals report - improved by grouping by dataLayer variable [if available] or HTML meta tag or completely disabled.

The way it works now does not provide too much value - see: https://masto.ai/@cacan/109664760004155909

Drazen Karacic Cacan (@[email protected])

Attached: 1 image Is there a way to manually group URLs , or at least provide a signal to Google, in #GCP #CoreWebVitals report? Currently, for an e-commerce website with proper schema markup, and even dataLayer variable with pageType set - product and category pages are grouped into the same URL group, which is suboptimal and does not provide any value to reporting. It would be more valuable not to have URL grouping in #CWV reporting at all]. #SEO

Mastodon
@johnmu Would love to have a Performance Report for "Voice search results" next to "Search results" and "Discover". Everyone in the industry I talk to would like to make a strong case for voice search being used for a particular brand and set queries/questions, however, so far no one can effectively measure it!

@johnmu Actually I do have one!

In GSC this is annoying

"Referring page
None detected
URL might be known from other sources that are currently not reported"

Bit more clarity on this please as I am trying to fix issues and indications are that either I have a wrong link somewhere (in this case I don't), it;'s the site map (it isn't) or someone has linked to it - no idea but has meant IO have had to put a redirect in and hope that sorts it. So more clarity from GSC please!

@johnmu Posted it on twitter :)

I also have two questions to you over there -.. sorry I just can't deal w the don LOL (so hard to work with)

@johnmu
I'd love to see the ability to batch edit sitemaps in GSC!
And please bring back parameter handling?
