What is a web crawler, really?

Where do you start with a starter's guide? By Marie Kondoing it, and throwing out half the stuff that doesn't bring you joy (or help users). Great new Search off the Record podcast from @lizzi, @johnmu
& @methode

Search Off the Record: Rewriting the SEO Starter Guide

The SEO Starter Guide is getting a refresh! Have you ever wondered how the Search team plans and writes such a document? In this episode of Search Off the Record, John Mueller, Gary Illyes, and Lizzi Sassman discuss which topics are still relevant, the right level of detail for a starter guide, and whether or not including anti-patterns in documentation is a good idea.    Resources: Episode transcript → SEO Starter Guide →  SEO Starter Guide: What’s all the drama? → Let’s pick a domain name →   Search Off the Record is a podcast series that takes you behind the scenes of Google Search with the Search Relations team.   #SOTRpodcast   Speaker: John Mueller; Gary Illyes; Lizzi Sassman;, Products Mentioned: Search Console;,

Really like the fact google now publish the IP addresses googlebot uses.

The list is a bunch of ranges in CIDR notification format, rather than a list of the actual IP addresses. Really I'd argue the list isn't for human consumption, rather targeted at tools and firewall providers, but I threw together this tool for the fun of it so you can test an individual IP4 or IP6 address against the list.

I'm preparing another set of the Ask-Googlebot videos, where I answer questions that folks have about SEO & Search. I have a bunch of topics, but I'd love to also hear from you!

What are some semi-evergreen questions you hear (or have!) which would be useful to have answered officially? Drop them into https://goo.gle/seo-oh ! Thanks!

Google SEO Office Hours Question Form

The Search Central team is experimenting with ways of helping to answer your questions around Google Search, websites, and the things between. We're currently recording Google SEO Office Hours on a monthly basis, and we publish them on our YouTube channel. Is there a Google Search / SEO question on your mind that you'd like to have answered? Let us know here! This form is not suitable for site-specific questions, and we won't be able to answer all questions. Feel free to also post in the Search Central help community, where like-minded experts can give you input too. This form is currently experimental and likely to change over time.

Need some input here:

What's a piece of technical documentation that you find yourself coming back to again and again, because it's *just that good*?

Rumor has it I've been already laid off. Rumor is false: we, the search relations team, still don't know what's gonna happen, when, or to whom, so we're working normally, focusing on projects that we think we can deliver fast and will help the most externally.

That's it, goodbye, and don't believe everything you read on the internet.

I'm hanging out with the #Google #Search Console team for a few days. What's on your mind that you'd like to see in Search Console, or see more of there?

My team just published this year's last Google #SEO Office Hours recording.

We collect questions from the community (with the form at https://goo.gle/seo-oh ) and try to work through a sample of them over the course of the month. You're welcome to add your questions there too. We can't answer all questions (way too many), we try to get to the important / relevant / answerable ones though.

The recording is now live at https://youtu.be/l8bJ14yQorE

The transcript is at https://developers.google.com/search/help/office-hours/2022/december
