I’ve always liked woodworking and a lot of home repair stuff, having grown up doing a lot of that kind of work, and starting my career working in construction. And there’s a ton of great content on these topics on YouTube, etc. these days. But I always cringe when looking any deeper at the creators behind the content because they’re overwhelmingly from a narrow cultural slice and very frequently casually toss off dismissal or even hate towards people I love & care about.
@anildash Good dude woodworking dude alert: (Doesn't help with the "narrow cultural slice," obviously, but Nick Offerman being really into woodworking has always been kind of neat https://offermanwoodshop.com/

@parkermolloy @anildash +1 to Nick Offerman - I’ve listened to “Paddle Your Own Canoe” and “Gumption” while working in the shop (never did get around to building that canoe). A shame he doesn’t have an instructional YouTube channel.

@parkermolloy @anildash I humbly submit my buddy David Picciuto from https://makesomething.tv

Again, narrow slice, but generally a good human.

@anildash Before Covid, I trained Brazilian Jiu Jitsu pretty frequently. Man, you do not want to get into a conversation longer than 5 minutes in one of those gyms.

My YouTube algo was also trash: BJJ videos + woodworking ~= survivalist reactionary, apparently.

@anildash Big same. For me, it's with car and farm equipment repair. I appreciate the knowledge sharing, but I wish it could be from more than just Joe The Plumber—and that I didn't feel like I had to hide in the shadow of his judgement, along with many people I care about.

@danilo @anildash Checked out and subscribed. Good looking content. Thanks for the tip.
@davebyrne @anildash You won't be disappointed! She's a great presenter with a ton of experience, very well informed

@danilo @anildash second See Jane Drill and add Laura Kampf- https://youtube.com/@laurakampf

I also like Silver Cymbal and the content is very solid and bigotry free (if with a strange delivery cadence) but it’s still a confident middle American white dude

@anildash I was a huge This Old House fan back in the day, and I came to the realization that I enjoyed the shows which got them out of the New England environment. When they went into areas like New Orleans where they were working with culturally diverse homeowners and vendors, the show seemed less niche and more accessible.
@anildash This Old House is the only home improvement organization I even remotely follow for a similar reason.
@anildash one of my passions is dorking out on recovered/reclaimed wood, a la old roughcut from demo or pallets. There's something very satisfying about taking garbage and making it into an object that is pleasing to interact with. For the holiday I gifted myself a hand plane since I can use it without hurting the batteries or burning dinosaurs for electricity.
@anildash I've unsubscribed from a couple of channels who casually dropped Jordan Peterson as their book of choice when they're sponsored by Audible.
@jws how do I unsubscribe from my mother’s emails?
@anildash Just gonna put in a plug for Hand Tool Rescue - can't find any info about his personal opinions, and his vids are mostly wordless... basically, he makes ASMR for middle-aged dads. Here! Check out his restoration of a 19th-century unnecessarily complicated apple peeler!

@anildash Seconding the folks who mentioned Leah/See Jane Drill and Mercury Stardust. Also:

Laura Kampf - typically more "building fun ish from scrapyard material" but currently rebuilding a house *and* a tiny house https://youtube.com/@laurakampf

Transcend Furniture Gallery - Way better than average furniture refinishing, both in terms of the furniture and the production https://youtube.com/@TranscendFurnitureGallery

@anildash Hmmm. Good observation. True. I'll keep my eyes out for exceptions.
