"Introducing Ring Car Cam!"

now i'm gonna remind folks that everyone's threat profile is different and my security decision-making is not right for everyone, but there is no fucking way you should give Amazon direct access to your driving habits, GPS location, OBD-II port, *and* place a microphone in your car to boot.

all over an LTE connection you do not control.

@neurovagrant Also if regular #dashcams are an infringement of #privacy, then what is this #Govware?
@neurovagrant Don't forget sharing all your video with local cops without your knowledge!
@neurovagrant @kvuzet my threat model is "not enough of my data is owned by corporations"
@neurovagrant The "Ring Car Cam" is a monstrosity. I do no want to know or be acquainted with anyone who gets one.
@neurovagrant
Interesting topic. As far as I could find out, these devices are not sold in germany. I think it violates the european law DSGVO (Datenschutz-Grundverordnung) aka GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation). It is not ok if someone knows where my number plate was at what time, without there being a legal right to be protected that is superior to my privacy.
@neurovagrant โ€ฆ Bosses are gonna put these in *all* the fleet vehicles! ๐Ÿฅบ

@neurovagrant

"We spy on people at home and from their pocket, why not their car?" - Amazon, probably

@neurovagrant The first thing I did when I got my Rivian was completely disable Alexa. The moment Ford added Alexa to my Ford via OTA update, I immediately disabled it.

Hell, I haven't used my Roombas since Amazon bought iRobot.

@neurovagrant we are in agreement, no fricken way.

No need for odb connectivity just for power supply. Telemetry's the diamond Amazon is fishing for. Countless possibilities. Not just your driving habits, your whereabouts, the smalltalk in your cabin. Combined with a dashcam Amazon knows the whereabouts of all cars you're crossing even if they don't use such device themselves. Knowledge about traffic and improvement of card material are just drive-by effects. I'm happy to live in DSGVO-land @bfdi

@neurovagrant Keep in mind that the product is aimed mostly at people who have already alexa/ring stuff in their home.

They have no idea of basic privacy/security issues or they are happily ignoring them to have more... huh, I don't know... maybe an AI to talk with.

Maybe I am a bit paranoid, but it seems that 2023 will be a sorry year for #privacy

@neurovagrant What could possibly go wrong! I would much rather have a car related incident and wish I had this than have it and bask in the contentment that I'm ready for any road incidents. It is a very lousy tradeoff. You give off so much and get so little...
@neurovagrant 100% fuck this. Strong agree on your view point
@neurovagrant although my car is too old for ODB port, so that's a starting point

@neurovagrant In other words: We're selling you on the idea of us getting to watch your every move. For your own Safety.

HARD. PASS.

@neurovagrant All they gotta do to make it perfect is to integrate Alexa into it.

/s

@neurovagrant No fucking way you should PAY Amazon to track your driving habits, GPS location, ODB-II Port and Listen to everything that happens in YOUR car... unless maybe you lend you car to someone or have a fleet of company cars.
@neurovagrant
Hell's teeth!
"We're Amazon, we already know more about you than your government does, and we'd like you to pay us to spy on you while you're driving as well"
@neurovagrant every day we get a bit closer to the future predicted in WALL-E
@neurovagrant also, the intent here seems to be to leave it in the windscreen all the time.
Last time I accidentally left a dashcam in my window whilst parked, a thief broke a window to steal it! I don't think they've thought this through!
@neurovagrant boy I sure love to be recorded by a camera that will send all of its footage to the cops when requested because who needs privacy
@neurovagrant Yikes, and youโ€™d also be providing surveillance of other people who did not consent everywhere you drive.
@neurovagrant wonder if theyโ€™ll give cops access to that without a warrant like they do door cam recordings. https://www.cnn.com/2022/07/14/tech/amazon-ring-police-footage/index.html

@neurovagrant wait wait wait. its got an LTE connection??? and you don't control it????

good god. what a NIGHTMARE

@neurovagrant When the frogs have boiled, they introduced car-cam. The only extra step I can think of is a Ring "App" for your mobile - only for your protection of course... ๐Ÿคฃ

@neurovagrant

These are the types of posts I wish I had QT for because I could not agree more. This is HORRIBLE.

People scream about privacy, yet invite the surveillance right on in...

@neurovagrant
And pay money to them for the privilege to spy on you
