It's normal to have a favorite index entry, right? #index
@bradl I haven’t seen that handbook in quite some time. Takes me right back.
@bradl Who cares about normal? That’s beautiful.
@judlew Almost 40 years on it still delights me. When I was indexing technical manuals that entry served as a sort of holy grail — long sought, never achieved.
@bradl I’m just happy to know it exists. It’s a poem in an index.

@bradl My favourite index entry was in an old dBase programming manual - actually two entries. Sadly I can't remember the precise details, but the entries were something like

Infinite loop: see "Hanging"

Hanging: see "Infinite loop"

@bradl Yes it's normal. One of the fun parts of indexing are the times when when you can make a lovely entry #indexodon #indexing
@bradl
Someone enjoyed making that index entry, and I am very happy for them 🧡

@bradl Ah, the CRC. So thick and so comprehensive. Do they only sell digital now, or is is still available in real format.
CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics

High Quality Science requires High Quality Data! Today, more than ever, the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics is critical in ensuring that researchers, educators, and students have the highest quality data for chemical compounds and physical particles. Available both in print and online, the Handbook covers 390 chemistry, physics, and related subjects organized in easy-to-find, well-organized tables. @bradl I don’t see your point.
@SonofaGeorge A. OK. B. True. C. I see what you did there.
@bradl "Water, sea, see sea water" to complement this?
@bradl I hope so, because here's mine:

@trek_rav @bradl I kind of thought this one was everyone's favorite

Williams Obstetrics and Male Chauvinism

@bradl Yes.
@Nentuaby @bradl Also the HQ address of one very large IT company IIRC.
@Nentuaby @bradl Turbo Pascal 3 manual. „endless loop -> loop, endless“ and of course it got linked back from there.
@bradl as a former indexer, so pleased to have entries like that noticed 😊
@baba_lilith Indexes As an index lover indexers have my eternal gratitude. This one was hall of fame for me 🏆
@bradl @purinkle reminds me of this old yellow pages entry. A classic.
@wj Oh, burn...(I used to take dog training in Boring, OR)
@purinkle
@bradl @wj @purinkle
OK, so who thought, “What civil engineers could I tag…?”?

@bradl I might like the index entry for Recursion in K&R'a first edition of The C Programming Language, which lists the R's page number in the index (269).

But yours is has a charming rhythmic harmony that's hard to beat.

@bradl

Recursion, See Recursion has to be the all time classic though 🙂🤷‍♂️

@simonzerafa @bradl A maths text we had when I was an undergrad -- on my bookshelves somewhere still -- had an index with a few fun entries. Ones I remember: Bad joke, see Joke, Bad. Joke, Bad, see Bad joke.

@simonzerafa @bradl annoyingly, I can't spot it on my shelves at present; but lest you think it apocryphal, I recalled enough to get the book details: Malcolm, W. G. (1975). _Number and structure_. Reed. An NZ publication, though not totally obscure as I see it cited in the _Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy_ in the article about A. N. Pryor.

The text is quite short, and it's clear the cuteness arises from a desire to use every letter in the alphabet. I wish I could remember them all!

@JohnDA @bradl

Seems to be a common trope/meme in programing references including:

and

With a reference to the K&R C bible example

@simonzerafa Recursion seems an easy reach, tbh, although appreciated. Symmetric poetry though ... that's art. (Opinions vary, obvs.) @JohnDA

@bradl The C programming language page 169. Recursion, page 169
@bradl whups, 269 as other commenters have noted

@bradl

I can't remember the exact terms but the WORST index I've ever seen literally did the

Term A: see Term B

Term B: see Tram A

thing.

Anyway, the guy who did that was a child molester.

@bradl Except 'seawater' is one word, isn't it? 🤔
@galand2dogs I defer to others on that. I haven't checked each of the subsequent 40+ editions to see if/how that particular entry has evolved. I did hear that it is no longer beautiful.
