Lurking for the moment until my tusks grow in...

@grammargirl I was so disappointed to hear an egregious error on your latest podcast that I felt compelled to set the record straight. And so, riffing on an evergreen opening line of a timeless novel, I can only state:

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that the cardboard tube at the centers of rolls of paper products have always been, and will always be, known as a "der-der".

I trust you will set the record straight in light of this fact.

@grammargirl I've always heard the word "versus" spoken when discussing legal cases, playoffs, and even when soliciting opinions, such as, "Ice cream: vanilla versus chocolate?"

More recently, I've started hearing people use "verse" used in what seems to be the same manner ("Allies verse Axis"). I also heard "vice" in similar situations.

Color me confused! Then I thought of "vice versa" and wondered if that phrase was somehow related. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this!

Happy holidays! Here is a wreath made from punch cards that was at the Computer History Museum.

Computer science pioneer and United States Navy rear admiral Grace Hopper was born #OTD in 1906.

As far as I’m aware, she is the only person who has both a supercomputer and a US Navy destroyer named after her.

If Mariah Carey sees her shadow tomorrow that means 6 more weeks of Christmas music.
I just presented Art Spiegelman with the National Book Award Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, on the same day that PENAmerica put out a letter signed by Art and Margaret Atwood and me, among others, protesting the latest round of book bannings.
