@simonbs 2 feature requests for your now finished side side project... :)
- can you put the text cursor at the beginning of the re toot?
- can you make this work with tweets so we can easily move discussions from bird site without driving traffic there?
@john Unfortunately, I can't move the cursor. As soon as you share the image, control is handed off to the receiving app 😔
While I understand the desire to support Twitter, and I think it's an interesting use case you're highlighting, I likely won't support this. For two reasons: Many people on Mastodon really don't like Twitter. I'm afraid how this would affect my product. And second, from what I've heard, Twitter's API is much more cumbersome to work with. I'll keep it in mind though 😊
@timonus I have considered it but I'm not sure if it's a good idea. For two reasons:
1. People on Mastodon seem to really dislike the bird site so I'm afraid if it'll have a negative effect one my current product.
2. From what I have heard, the Twitter API is much more cumbersome to work with than Mastodon's.
@simonbs wow, this is bad.
Like, let's say I block MacRumors because it makes me mad or depressed or whatever.
If you retoot MacRumors then I don't see it in my feed.
If you use this weird screenshot feature, then I now get a MacRumors post directly in my face. I have no control.
Now let's pretend you image-posted some fascist because you wanted to say "ugh, look how terrible this is!" Your intention to draw attention to the terrible thing throws it right in my face without the control of blocking it that Mastodon gives me.
So, nah, I really don't like this.
Are you new on Mastodon? Do you realize that the developer on purpose made it so quote posts are not possible. For a good reason.
@stefanhansen Yes, I have read the arguments and they’re valid. They seem very focused on all the negative aspects and none of the positive aspects or that sharing content through links is part of the Internet and inevitable. Just like we share links to articles and blog posts with comments.
The energy should be focused on figuring out how quote posting can be supported in a good way rather than disallowing it a altogether because, ultimately, you can’t disallow it. The Internet finds a way.
@stefanhansen You’re right. The Internet doesn’t do anything, people do. But you’re being pedantic. You know what I mean.
I don’t think the analogy to real-life holds. But if you want to keep it, in real-life you may have a conversation and then go to another group of people and be like “John and I were discussing…” or “I just heard from John..”
And in the Internet it’s common to share content from others and link to it. That’s a big part of what people do on the Internet.
It's not being pedantic. To me, saying that something does something is a way of not taking responsibility, and implying that it happens by itself.
Yes, you would say "I just heard from John that..." and what would follow would be John's idea expressed in your words and not a direct quote, and that is exactly what makes all the difference.
I don't think it's the same, since it's like giving something a book, with a comment like "This is a wonderful book. I think you'd like it since you love abstract algebra". It's not part of an ongoing discussion, unlike what is happening here on Mastodon.
@stefanhansen It can be part of a conversation. It’s a matter of designing it properly. Twitter’s approach isn’t the best but I also think dismissing quote posts altogether is caused by a lack of imagination as to how it can be improved.
What Re: Toot does is merely a hack until Mastodon officially supports quote posts, which I think is inevitable
Content on the Internet can and will be shared. If you don’t like your content being shared, make it followers only. Re: Toot respects that.
Well, we disagree.
I don't have a problem with my posts being shared. I just don't think it helps the quality of conversation with quote posts.
Have a nice day.
