Rep. Matt Gaetz just nominated Trump to be the next Speaker of the House.

You don't have to be a House member to be Speaker.

Dems should nominate Obama.

@rbreich That doesn't make any sense at all.
@rbreich I mean, there's no way a single R would vote for Obama for speaker. It would just be for show
@ssfckdt @rbreich ok how about Hillary then?
@patricklee @rbreich May as well be Omar at that rate
@ssfckdt @rbreich Omar is currently active in politics, which Hillary and Obama aren’t beyond boosting speeches.
@patricklee @rbreich the whole question is do you actually think any of those suggestions will get more votes (i.e. some Republican votes) than Jeffries?
@ssfckdt @rbreich I don’t, but I’m still willing to throw gasoline onto the gop bonfire gaslighting to make them burn out sooner.
@ssfckdt @rbreich and what a fantastic show it would be
@rbreich Can dead people be nominated. I feel like Abraham Lincoln would make consensus.

@frandroid @rbreich

"The Speaker of the House is responsible for administering the oath of office to the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives, giving Members permission to speak on the House floor, designating Members to serve as Speaker pro tempore, counting and declaring all votes, appointing Members to committees, sending bills to committees, and signing bills and resolutions that pass in the House."

Hmmm...
Nominate away, but they won't be able to "do" the job!

@rbreich Why? They actually have a good person already.
@markstoneman @rbreich ummm... although the best political strategy is to stick with jeffries... you think jeffries is "good"?? like you think he's anything other than yesterday's run of the mill Republican?
@benda @markstoneman @rbreich what do you think obama is?
@queso @markstoneman @rbreich the same, why would you think that's a relevant point? lol
@benda @markstoneman @rbreich because that's what the thread is about? lol
@queso @markstoneman @rbreich right and my reply was specifically @markstoneman regarding his reply to the thread.
@markstoneman @rbreich Agreed, Hakeem Jeffries is excellent.
@rbreich No, the Democratic caucus should just keep doing what it's doing.
@rbreich Dems need to stand united with Jeffries.
@rbreich Counterproductive, but almost worth it for the yuks.
@rbreich black wave 😃😃😃😃
@rbreich Yeah. Capitalism works so well.
@rbreich Hakeem Jeffries should be the next Speaker of the House
@rbreich Claire Underwood gets nominated in the 12th round. Bet the farm. #HouseofClowns #GOPclownshow
@rbreich Dems can just sit tight. Jeffries is a great pick. Let republicans keep playing in the gutter.
@rbreich No. Dems need to keep supporting Jeffries until he wins. But I get your point. 😂
@rbreich Is it not possible for the Democrats to find and negotiate a bipartisan deal with just the 6 sane and moderate #GOP representatives needed to vote Hakeem #Jeffries in as #Speaker?
@jeremy_pm @rbreich The sane and moderate GOP representatives all left the party. Everyone left is a right wing nut case.
@tprophet @rbreich You’re probably correct but surely there’s more than a few Republican members concerned about their party being held to ransom by a group of conspiratorial anarchists whose aim is to undermine government and destroy democracy. This would be the smartest and simplest way of saving the Republican Party from destroying itself and the USA.
@jeremy_pm @rbreich You assume that they care about anything other than obtaining and holding onto power, or that they have any interest whatsoever in governing. This is a party that literally attempted a coup. There are no good faith actors among them--none, zero.
@jeremy_pm @tprophet @rbreich that ship has long sailed and left with Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, they were forced out. The GOP are no longer "conservative" in a lot of people's eyes.

@tprophet @jeremy_pm @rbreich  Or scared poopless of being shot by a member of their "base."

Fun fact: "Al-Qaeda" translates as "the base."

@jeremy_pm @rbreich Such a deal would probably have to vote in either one of the most conservative Democrats, or one of those closest-to-moderate Republicans.
@patrickoldhiker @rbreich @jeremy_pm
Well, yes. That's how democracy (should) work.
@patrickoldhiker @rbreich That is essentially the problem with the USA's binary political system. There's little room, if any, for people prepared to work together for the good of the country.
Let’s just say it: The Republicans are the problem.

Republicans have become more extreme than Democrats.

The Washington Post
@jeremy_pm @rbreich Better for Dems to make deal with McCarthy than extremists like Gaetz and Boebert. I don't think any 6 sane Republican can make a deal without offending their party. So they all have to make a move led by McCarthy and let the crazy keep to playing in the gutter like someone on this thread said.
@rbreich I'm surprised Republicans haven't nominated George Santos. Yet.
@rbreich Dems should keep doing Exactly what they're doing
@rbreich Gaetz is an abomination. I can’t imagine Trump would get any more votes than McCarthy.
@rbreich Dems should just start putting up joke nominations. Wile E. Coyote would be fun.
@RichFox @rbreich that would just be divisive, but I get your point. If you turn into some live streams of the coverage by various networks, it's hilarious all the nominations being put forth in the live chat by viewers, almost all things imaginable, even objects and franchises, yes even Greta Thunberg 🍿. #Speaker #USPolitics
@rbreich How about Dolly Parton? j/k Jeffries should be the next speaker.

@rbreich

why did #trump just get one vote?

what effect is this going to have on him?

🤔

@rbreich why do they think Trump would take the position of Speaker?
@rbreich No. They should continue standing with Jeffries. I know you’re joking but hell nah

@rbreich
It's a funny image but no, the Dems should continue demonstrating the willingness to actually govern until the Republicans sober up. And maybe cut a deal.

As for Gaetz, nominating Trump when Trump's already endorsed McCarthy just makes Gaetz look foolish.

@rbreich Ideally, they could find someone better than McC that can get votes from both sides. It doesn't have be a politician.

I couldn't think of a single famous American that isn't vilified by one side or the other though. Is there a single person left in the country that both "sides" like?

@rbreich Dems should consider Liz Cheney for speaker. Placing her third in line for the presidency would be well-deserved after her work on the Jan 6 committee. We are in a country over party moment.

@rbreich they could nominate a different person every round: Obama, Hilary Clinton, Reagan (his son, not the corpse of Republicanism), Steven Colbert. Or lets get serious: Kenzinger, Cheney, or Fred Upton or David Joyce as you suggested.

They need to seize control of the moment and stop letting the tiny minority Coup Caucus tail wagging the dog. There must be no more backseat coup.

#StopTheCoupAgain #SeizeTheHouse

@rbreich Except that would break up the dem vote so it somehow sinks below rep votes. What is really happening is who can make who go home first so they can get a majority.
@rbreich Can you imagine someone being stupid enough (and traitorous enough) to think that Trump could do that job? 🤷‍♂️
@rbreich Nah, we should stick with Hakeem Jeffries. He's carrying all the Dem votes. We just need 6 Rs to flip or 11 Rs to vote present. My 2 cents.
@rbreich You're right! I hope the Dems in the House hear you.
