Seventh-round nominations for House speaker: McCarthy (D-CA), Jeffries (D-NY) and Donalds (R-FL).
In seventh round voting, McCarthy again fallsshort of the threshold to become speaker. Only drama remaining is how many votes will Donalds continue to receive from rebel Republicans.

Seventh round of voting for House speaker:

Jeffries (D) - 212
McCarthy (R) - 201
Donalds (R) - 19
Trump - 1
(One Republican member voted 'present')

An eighth round is coming up, according to several GOP members of the House.
We're on to the eighth round nominations. If any of the nominees change or the roll call begins to go in a different direction than previous rounds I'll let you know.

Eighth round results of roll call vote for House speaker:

Jeffries (D) - 212
McCarthy (R) - 201
Donalds (R) - 17
Hern (R) - 2
Trump - 1
(One member voting present)

All indications from the House floor are we're headed this afternoon for a ninth ballot.
Ninth round nominations for House speaker underway.
@w7voa what an absolute shit show
@w7voa Is anything likely to change? It’s hard to see what will - so what’s the point keep holding votes until someone KNOWS they have the votes to win?
@w7voa at 3 failed votes a day we will reach a new record of 134 failed ballots on April 7th. Mark your calendar
@w7voa isn’t a speaker supposed to be able to count votes? Didn’t he learn anything from #SpeakerPelosi?

@w7voa

Gaetz voting for tfg last two votes. Lots of boos on the previous vote when trump result was announced.

@Kozmo @w7voa

It's a move that not only ensures he curries favor, but more importantly to republicans, ensures that he doesn't lower the threshold for speaker vote counts by voting "present".

@w7voa So after a night of deliberations they tried the same strategy to see if they got different results?

@keripaekakariki

@w7voa

You should have seen the front page of the Hill yesterday. Must have been a trumper's turn on shift to write the headlines! "Republicans report they are on the verge of a breakthrough..." 😁

@w7voa What's that Einstein definition of "insanity" again?
@w7voa If these 20 “rebels” in the house really want to screw over their party, maybe they should just vote for Jeffries.
@cheffe @w7voa or McCarthy just talk to Democrats and get a deal. I mean, this is embarrassing and a nonfunctional House...
@EgbertS @w7voa ego drives everything vs being productive for their constituents, unfortunately.
@cheffe @w7voa indeed... No 11 on the way, groundhog day already... and 1 vote on the 5th Jan for the orange guy, unbelievable
@EgbertS @w7voa it is pretty insane. If they want to screw him over they should just vote for Jeffries.
@w7voa   I will check back tomorrow.
@w7voa During Biggs' nomination speech C-SPAN's camera cut to McCarthy having a very animated conversation with someone I should recognize but couldn't place, anyone know who that was?
@w7voa As an Aussie I am shaking my head. Our speakers just get to pull the politicians heads in and make them behave. I might want an Australian head of govt but I recognise that our system actually works far better than the rampant idiocy occurring in the USA. Compulsory voting, preferential voting and redistributions within a state are on the basis of the number of enrolled voters.The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) determines the number of members of the House of Representatives to which each state and territory is entitled (called apportionment) and the boundaries of each electorate. Sensible and sane.
@w7voa MAGAs shutdown the US gov't again, Jan 6 w/o bats & broken windows.
@w7voa bless their hearts.
@w7voa C-Span just said that McCarthy is looking to adjourn. I wonder if he'll get the votes or will be forced to lose another vote or two first.
@w7voa he REALLY must like rejection.
@w7voa
The @GOP is imploding. A dumpster fire of idiocy.

@w7voa

Yeah, it's a funny show, but it's getting sad...

What if they scraped up five or ten old-fashioned REAL Republicans and the new gang nominated Liz Cheney for Speaker of the House? Why shouldn't the Democrats go along with the joke?

(Because she's wrong on so many of the issues and because her father is despicable, so be careful what you joke for...)

@shanen @w7voa the Dems have nothing to gain by not just watching them implode I'm slow motion
@w7voa Followed by a motion to adjourn and another large pizza order.
@w7voa If at first (or second, or third, or…) you don’t succeed, fail, fail again.
@w7voa If Republicans pile onto the "present" bandwagon, lowering the victory number, it's the Democrats who have the most votes behind a Speaker…
@Sea_Dragons @w7voa so we'd need 11 Republicans to vote present to reach that point, right?
@w7voa so Jeffries wins right?

@w7voa

Jeffries 212
Clown 201
Who 19
Circus freak 1

@w7voa ha ha trump lost another election.
@w7voa oh please let's see 21!
@w7voa Highly unlikely, but it's possible that enough Republicans will vote "present" to allow Jeffries to have a majority. That would allow the House to get on with business and they could oust him within weeks if not days.

@robrish @w7voa

don't they need 218. so would have to cross the house.

@amiserabilist @w7voa No, they need a majority of those present and voting. Casting a "present" vote means abstaining, not voting. If enough Republicans do that, Jeffries will win with Democratic votes alone.
@amiserabilist @w7voa Or they could just walk out of the chamber instead of voting "present."

@robrish @w7voa

https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/what-happens-if-some-house-members-start-voting-present/

i see now. thank you. but still effectively committing career suicide.

What Happens If Some House Members Start Voting ‘Present’?

The possibility of Jeffries’ being installed as speaker is remote, but it is not impossible.

National Review
@amiserabilist @w7voa There's already been one Republican, Victoria Spartz, who started voting present on day 2. I suspect those most likely to join her are people not planning to run again in 2024.
@w7voa The scoreboard is showing one vote for "Other". Who voted for someone not nominated? (edit: got it, Gaetz -> Trump)
@w7voa that party is imploding and they are advertising it to their constituents this week.
@w7voa McCarthy is D-CA? I don't think so 😂
@joshmend @w7voa Hey who knows, maybe he figures he has a better chance if he switches parties.

@w7voa

Why list McCarthy first? Is he seriously leading Jefferies? No..?

Appreciate you, but please do watch the impulse to cater and coddle Republicans. It is only human nature that MSM sees them as having potential power and thus wants to make them feel more comfortable.
