Happy to announce this #preprint , the culmination of last 10 years. 🥳

We find that #antimicrobialpeptides are evolved to control specific #microbiome #bacteria. This example is a textbook case of host #immune #evolution being shaped by the microbiome 🦠 which depends on host #ecology.

Thanks for comments! Bit of an experiment: we are posting pre-submit to get feedback 🙂.

Of particular interest to the #Drosophila community: in this study, we reveal that the #antimicrobial Diptericin B is uniquely attuned to control Acetobacter #bacteria, of the 2 most common #microbiome members of flies 🦠. In flies without DptB, a non-essential #immune effector, Acetobacter is virulent and kills alongside a severe bloating phenotype.

If you've seen bloating in your fly, it may be an interaction causing gut leakage and Acetobacter systemic #infection 🤯 !!

Finally: big shout-out to Lena, who was a fantastic tech that made it possible to finish this work off in the past year as I moved to the UK.

"While the evolution of immune genes is often interpreted with host phylogeny as a principle explanatory factor [7,46], host ecology can be a stronger driver of microbiome community structure [47]. ... Here we identify how specific effectors evolved to constrain the growth of specific microbes, finding that host ecology, not host phylogeny, makes sense of effector-microbe specificity."

Attached: 1 image What would be a greater opportunity for my first post here other than announcing my first (first-author) paper? A thread: Despite the increasing attention on the oral microbiome, until now we didn't have a good idea about how it evolves in the wild! In our new publication with Adrian Forsythe, @[email protected], Jaelle Brealey, Christina Warinner & Katerina Guschanski we investigate exactly this! 🦷🦠 https://doi.org/10.1093/molbev/msac263

@MarkHanson @markella_moraitou @cyrilpedia Another paper demonstrating systems over linear thinking. Hurray! 😁
@MarkHanson Wow. That is so cool 🔥 Congratulations 👏🥂🔥
