Teachers can only write off $300 on their taxes for classroom expenses

Most Americans can write off zero dollars for business expenses

Trump writes off $130,000 in hush money he paid Stormy Daniels as a business expense

@rbreich

I used to work as a market researcher. One year, we did a study for a major crayon company, interviewing teachers just before the start of school. I was shocked at how much of their own money they spent on classroom supplies. It was well beyond $300.

@crcollins @rbreich yup. Far more. I once was hired to teach a class where the room was empty other than furniture! I had to buy books! How do you teach when provided nothing?
@Mathlover @crcollins @rbreich
Which begs the question: if a teacher doesn't go out of pocket to supply the things that were typically the schools' responsibilities, will the school fire that teacher?
@crcollins @rbreich Yup. This country has been devaluing teachers, teaching, and schools for a long, long time at this point.
@crcollins @rbreich Some years, it was over $1,000 for me.
@schfinkes @crcollins @rbreich maybe if you have sex with a porn star? put that instead of classroom expenses on your taxes, they’d be hard press to prove you dared to provide for the students you’re trying to teach.
@crcollins @rbreich I'm a special education teacher. It is December, and I have spent close to $700 already. By the end of the year, it will be close $1500, and this is a cut back. They don't provide curriculum for me because I'm a special Ed math and science teacher and my students are well below grade level with their skills, so I have to make it myself.
@Ekinnajay @rbreich @crcollins YEP. I HAVE SPENT $550. SO MANY FOLXS DON’T APPRECIATE OUR SACRIFICES.
@rbreich Rich Welfare is a PROBLEM America.. BIGLY.
@rbreich the biggest hustle was when regular folks lost the deductions for unreimbursed business-related expenses (and SALT >10k).

@gdekhayser @rbreich

I'm still mad about the salt loss. It was a direct hit against "blue states". They didn't even try to hide it. Just laughed and said "watch us own the libs". A large portion of America was just fine with it.

@whateva_0331 @rbreich Iowa gets ethanol. TExas gets oil subsidies. SALT was ours. We put in SO much more in Fed tax than we get out.
@rbreich is it because he has good (corrupt ) accountants
@rbreich In the UK one MP tried to claim for a duck house, another still in a powerful job for heating his stables.
@rbreich There’s one status quo for the rich and powerful and another for us peasants! This country never lived up to being free and just!

@rbreich

As I earned a degree in accounting with an emphasis in taxation, it was drilled into me that--to be deductible--business expenses must be "ordinary, necessary, and not extravagant."

Trump's hush money to a sex worker fails all of these criteria.

@johnlogic @rbreich Yeah, don't really see how you frame it – or provide the necessary business case to support it if an auditor flags it – so that it doesn't ultimately get disqualified?
@johnlogic @rbreich and his lawyer spent time in jail for doing Trump’s bidding

@rbreich

Maybe that's why he claimed he couldn't release his taxes because of a long-running audit: I gotta think any auditor worth their pay grade is taking a microscope to these kinds of payoffs (and, hopefully, disqualifying them).

@rbreich Decades of austerity and neoliberalism, has redistributed trillions upon trillions of dollars from the poor and middle classes to the wealthiest one percent, corresponding with a continued reframing of our political, economic, and oversight systems with their whims.

@DebErupts @rbreich

One of the most accurate statements that I've read.

@rbreich my little farm had a loss 3 years in a row. Our accountant said we had to call it a hobby and no more declaring grain. But his businesses showed losses every year. Shouldn't trump have to do the same?
@rbreich Did she declare it as income I wonder? 🍄
@rbreich The last thing Stormy Daniels said to Trump was, “It was business doing pleasure with you”
@rbreich
Apparently Trump believes this hush money paid to Stormy Daniels was well worth writing it off as a business expense...
He thinks it helped his "performance"...it
helped with his "erection" of his private 'realestate'.
@rbreich The problem is: MAGA-diots admire Trump for his cheating. Much like many Italians admired Berlusconi for ripping them off. No political culture or honesty in the US.
@dgavin @rbreich I will never get this. How can people cheer for the powerful gaming the system (while they are still the losers paying for it). Zero sense. "Because I'm smart" means I can, you can't, you are all dumb. Now 👏 for me. Cult of personality.

@rbreich

I spent over 1k dollars a year for office supplies alone, sometimes 2k.

Also, the prices of school supplies for students were upwards of $300 so another teacher & I bought items in bulk to sell only at cost - two glue sticks cost $3.50 but in bulk cost 20 cents - but if a student couldn't afford them we gave them one or two of everything - packs of paper and pencils of course and if they needed more later we gave them more.

The students needed them to do assignments.

@rbreich most of the #teachers I know, including myself, spent about that much on our #classrooms before #students even walked in the door for the first day.
#edutooter #edutooters
@rbreich it’s awful that teachers have to spend their own money on classroom supplies.
@rbreich 70K for his hair. Our tax process is broken.
@rbreich Considering how well that "hush" part went for him, it might even be considered a total loss.
@rbreich Is this a nominal threshold or percentual?
@rbreich
Yet the IRS did no investigation.
@MlleaPankhurst @rbreich HMM…IF THAT ISN’T CRIMINAL, IT SHOULD BE.
@rbreich would love to see the IRS get grilled in front of Congress for not doing their job of auditing him as they normally do.
@rbreich trump and gop stole our ability to write off office stuff in 2017.

@rbreich

Probably not a new concept. I’m sure he’s been writing off hookers for years.

@rbreich $300 on printer paper and ink alone. Taught science and often spent $50 or so for a single lab. Also several hundred dollars on Teachers Pay Teachers content - textbooks were inaccurate and more than a decade out of date.
@rbreich And millions in pass through SALT deduction.
Salaried are screwed
@rbreich Trump could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and commit tax fraud and the IRS and DOJ would not notice.
@rbreich Any business expense an employee pays out of pocket should be tax deductible. It's BS.
@rbreich the teacher write off is ridiculous. It makes me so mad they can’t write off their complete expenses.
@rbreich I couldn’t write off a single mile on my car that drives me to work every morning, this guy gets to write off his NDA agreement with a porn star. 🤡 there’s no justice in America, Donald Trump is above the law…
@rbreich hush money is a business expense for gangsters.
@rbreich To be fair, that "hush" part didn't work too well.
@rbreich it’s actually only $250 unless they increase it this year.
@rbreich we have teachers who not only buy supplies for their classrooms but also for the students. This is in addition to "adopting " a student to buy holiday gifts for, usually multiple kids, donate to buy a Thanksgiving meal for an entire family, and donate money to the school's student emergency fund. Teachers are a part of the backbone of our communities and yet remain grossly underappreciated and shoulder far too much blame for our failing educational systems.

@rbreich

How can anybody consider having sex as a business expense??? Makes no sense.

@rbreich my daughter is a 4th grade teacher. She sets up an Amazon wish list every year. Don’t get me wrong she has it fulfilled as there are very giving people in Kansas but a teacher shouldn’t have to beg for supplies.
@rbreich in today’s US tax environment, everyone should have an LLC and a side business to support write offs. It’s silly, but also how rich people play the game.
@rbreich Is there not a correlation between Doñald Trumpets bribies being'Written off' & charged to the, 'Austerytised' And Bogus Jonstonednazi and Mathew Hancock's 'Legal bills'. Being sent to, Nurses, Railway, Postal Workers, Unions'?
