Statue of Henrietta Lacks will replace Robert E Lee - BBC News

She will be honoured decades after cells taken without her consent helped revolutionise medicine.

@BlackMastodon @sonyablanck she deserves this honor
@zhivi @BlackMastodon she and her descendants deserve the honour plus reparations! certainly a hell of a lot more than that other guy

@zhivi @BlackMastodon @sonyablanck

That she is replacing the statue that White Nationalists from around the country gathered, and killed to try to force on the local government, is just too perfect.

She is responsible for 2 Nobel prizes so far and will have more to come. Finally starting proper recognition.

@zhivi @BlackMastodon Woah, imagine contributing to science without even knowing that you did! Risky thing that the doctor did though.
@BlackMastodon @writeblankspace yes it was. People debt understand why black folks don't trust doctors.

@zhivi @BlackMastodon thanks for sharing!

Really wish the BBC didn't put stolen in scare quotes when it referred to the cells.

@ahundt @BlackMastodon thank you for responding and reading. What would should have been used instead?
@zhivi @BlackMastodon I was just thinking stolen instead of "stolen", so no quotes. The way that sentence read to me it brought to mind some of the institutional dismissiveness Ruha Benjamin described in "Viral Justice" regarding Henrietta Lacks, HeLa cells, and her family. The book is much better on the topic overall in my view.
@ahundt @BlackMastodon thank you for clarifying and the resource you posted.
@zhivi @BlackMastodon I do! Everyone should read about her remarkable story
@zhivi @BlackMastodon love the story, but can I suggest the non-AMP (google controlled) link: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-64059050

@ianchanning @BlackMastodon thank you. I should have grabbed that one instead.
@zhivi @BlackMastodon thank you for reminding me of her name, know about this beautiful story, a true gift to humankind.
@zhivi @BlackMastodon Yes! I have read about Ms Lacks but I did not know about the statue. Roanoke is my hometown so I’m very excited to learn about this recognition! I May have to travel home in October to see the unveiling- thanks for sharing 😊
@zhivi @BlackMastodon Great news. She certainly made a larger contribution to the world than Lee, who was a traitor his country and a second-rate general, ever did.
@zhivi @BlackMastodon The book about her was required reading in my girls’ biology class in MT.
@zhivi I’m mostly not keen on statues of people, but I definitely make an exception in this case. HENRIETTA LACKS, baby!
@IPEdmonton thanks for replying. She deserves it.
@zhivi @BlackMastodon I never heard about her. What a hero! I'm so sorry her treatment was unsuccessful. She and her family should have known much sooner about her contribution. I'm glad her statue is going up in the place of that loser racist traitor.
@BlackMastodon @LizzieSpeaks this is, and many others reasons, why some in the black community don’t like doctors or prefer to go to black doctors.
