BIG NEWS: I am introducing a bill to require candidates to disclose under oath their employment, educational, & military history so we can punish candidates who lie to voters about their qualifications.

It will be called the Stop Another Non-Truthful Office Seeker (SANTOS) ACT.

@RitchieTorres Wait, really? I love the name if true.

@RitchieTorres "Stop Another Non-Truthful Office Seeker" ACT.

LMAO.

Nice.

@RitchieTorres How would you punish candidates who lie? And who would decide if they have lied?

@RitchieTorres

The party and the voters need to do a better job vetting candidates.

This is a farce no one looks good

@RitchieTorres , ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป Thank you!!
@RitchieTorres I see what you did there, New Yorkers love it, please continue.
@RitchieTorres I know this won't pass because it would take down Joe Biden.
@KatrinaMatheson It wonโ€™t pass because it is unconstitutional on its face. Any changes to the requirements for office must be done as constitutional amendments. This is nothing but using the bill process as twitter: troll, dunk, and chase clout.
@RitchieTorres Excellent! I hope this becomes law! It is badly needed! Thank you for fighting for truth!

@RitchieTorres well played Congressman, well played.

Shame it would likely be unconstitutional, just like requiring POTUS candidates to release their taxes.

@RitchieTorres

The name of this act is just pure perfection, my good gentleman

@RitchieTorres Don't technically ALL politicians lie? LOL
@RitchieTorres cna you add there " I AM NOT A RUSSIAN ASSETT"?
@RitchieTorres this act of course makes sense but it seems like theatre with nothing there when you give it a name like this (or even joke about it).
@RitchieTorres Rep. Torres really is taking this Santos business PERSONALLY! Lol, I love it!

@RitchieTorres This would be fantastic!

Most jobs require both experience and stringent qualifications.

So why then, can any Tom, Dick & Moron just grab a seat in Congress and... run the country!?

There should be an application/qualifications process, background checks and full vetting.

@the_Effekt @RitchieTorres
They should also be required to pass the civics exam that is used in obtaining US citizenship.
@RitchieTorres whoever came up with this bill name deserves a bonus, genius!!
@RitchieTorres are you trying make political candidates be honest,โ€ฆ, they would actually have to be like normal everyday joe people.? Good luck with that. I hope you enuff money, i know dont! You R Funny!
@RitchieTorres .....great idea.....perhaps also include presidents who fail to follow their oath of office to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America.....with clear, enforceable, and severe punishments defined. For good measure!!
@RitchieTorres A campaign is a nonprofit organization subject to federal and state laws. As a certified campaign treasurer for candidates in the State of New Jersey and on one occasion for a candidate for federal office, I am aware of the potential for abuse. From the brief media reports, it seems likely that tax fraud was part of the Santos campaign. Also, the ability of a candidate to loan his campaign money and then recover it later from funds from another donor is fundamentally flawed and a basis for abuse.
@RitchieTorres You would have thought that it would be a given considering it is wilfil misrepresentation or fraud. It appears, that like most things that the US is behind the rest of the world. In the UK, the Eu Australia and South Africa, if you are caught, you could expect up to 5 years for fraud and/or a fine
@RitchieTorres How about passing a bill that requires anyone running for Congress to be fully vetted before they even run. (Like we require for almost every other profession on the planet that affects the lives of others.)
@MelodyCooper @RitchieTorres Iโ€™ve always thought that instead of debates, candidates should be interviewed extensively by policy experts. But I think Iโ€™m the only one who wants to watch that
@anxiousrage @RitchieTorres Abeni, you are not alone. But that would require both parties to stop grandstanding for easy sound bites.
@RitchieTorres
SPLURF!
Hope it's successful.
@RitchieTorres Since when is there a need to callout Fraud, DECEIT of someone who lied to get the position they got, subterfuge...
@RitchieTorres is this a reference to #TheWestWing TV series, specifically the last couple of seasons?
Top Republicans remain silent over George Santos campaign lies

Congressman who won narrowly in New York denounced as โ€˜complete and utter fraudโ€™ for fabricating swaths of biography

The Guardian
@cohomologyisFUN @RitchieTorres Sometimes I feel I learned more about US Politics from #TheWestWing than from news stories, which is probably not a good thing in 2023. This is a new story to me: referencing an actual person in a bill ... a bit "on the nose", don'cha think? Isn't it enough to expose him in the media? Laws should only be necessary where common sense fails.

@bnt @RitchieTorres I love #TheWestWing and when I first saw this story, I thought of Matt Santos too. Although Matt Santos is way more awesome than this lying schmuck.

I donโ€™t have a strong opinion on this legislation but itโ€™s common for laws to be named (formally or informally) after people, although usually the authors of the legislation (eg McCain-Feingold) or the victim of a crime (eg Meganโ€™s laws). Also, cute acronyms are common (look up the full name of the Patriot Act).

@RitchieTorres Acronym of the year on the penultimate day? Wow. ๐Ÿคช
@RitchieTorres Please, include financial records and have a team look at human resource processes in industry. Further, request a Senate counterpart to include it in any nomination proceedings. And make it grounds for removal from office.
@RitchieTorres what options would be available for punishment? Would a 2/3 vote still be required for that MoC to be removed?
@RitchieTorres
What are the consequences?

@RitchieTorres

I lie on my employment application and my employer finds out, immediate termination. What you propose is simply not good enough. Punishment is bullsh*t and you know it. Termination from current and any other local or National office is the proper response.

@RitchieTorres ooooh I love this! Thank you!
@RitchieTorres wouldnโ€™t it be good if all politicians had to swear the truth, the whole truth and nothing but. Not just on CVs but in speeches. WOuldnโ€™t they be a lot quieter
@RitchieTorres This seems like misplaced energy and a First Amendment violation. Compelled speech as a prerequisite to holding public office?

@RitchieTorres I really like the idea, of this being under oath. I honestly am not sure about the name and the statement of punishing people being why.

I do think this oath and Bill does matter though, given the time to them fact check etc. the lying, when there is a lot that can benefit from #awareness right now, feeling.

And, we are becoming more aware of this, too. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ•Š๐ŸŒŽ๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ™๐ŸปโœŒ๐Ÿป

@RitchieTorres Just apply the same truth in advertising laws that apply to everyone except political candidates.
@RitchieTorres it is so annoying that we have to do this.
