Thank you for your patience. After observing the first 24 hours of Threads, we decided to block threads.net (in advance of them at some point joining the Fediverse).

There are openly, aggressively transphobic accounts on Threads.net with no visible attempt at moderation. We would defederate from any other Fediverse instance with that behaviour and no moderation, and there is no reason to treat threads.net any different.

Let's say I'm a small-time #Threads user, and I want to use the app to talk and read about some niche sports event happening right now, one that only gains traction in a community of enthusiasts, like an early season bike race, or some darts competition that's not the World Championships -- something in that ballpark. In #Fediverse and #Twitter they've got a hashtag for that, and the conversation is flowing, people are coming together. So I open the Threads app, and I've got my feed open. Now, there's no hashtags there. There's also no search function there. So what can I do? That's right -- nothing. I can only read what the algorithm wants me to read, and that's it. How, I repeat, how can Threads ever be relevant?

• You can't have hashtags
• You can't search for content
• you can't talk to your French cousins because they can't download it
• you cannot use this app if you are blind or visually impaired

But #mastodon is the wrong platform because you have to choose your server. #meta #socialnetwork #socialmedia

The Zuck suck is in full swing. In the few short hours since I started using #Threads, #DuckDuckGo has already blocked over 200 data tracking attempts. These include things like "headphone status" and "screen density."

EDIT for clarity: The 200+ attempts *may* have been overcounted as DDG hadn't tooled their VPN for Threads yet.

Since my post about the #DuckDuckGo app and #Threads is still getting lots of attention, I want to be clear about how I actually feel about #DataPrivacy. It's a lot like #recycling. Yeah it's a good thing to protect your own personal data, but if we're being honest, it's not effective on an individual scale. We need good legislation at a national level to meaningfully change the game for the benefit of us all. Until then, no matter how careful you are, you're still being negatively affected.
