@markhenick

Does any of that though replace the need for active listening skills and enough personal vulnerability to be open, authentic, and honest?
@HaplogroupNews I don’t think that’s what the authors are arguing

I took a glance at the article and didn't see how many females and how many males were in the study/poll.
I've learned to ignore study/polls and look at the science. Brain/Mind analyses would be the proof.

@JPeterE Simon Baron-Cohen’s Eyes Test isn’t a poll. It’s been shown repeatedly to have good reliability and validity in hundreds of studies. This particular meta-analysis was led out of Cambridge and published in PNAS so, while credibility is not entirely determined by authority, it’s a reasonably good filter. There’s also no such thing as proof in science

@markhenick
It's like using statistics of an engine to guess how long your engine will last with the amount or upkeep you do. The science is taking it apart and analysing the ware and other factors for the period or use. Then they can determine with much more accuracy. I hope this helps you to understand the truth.

@markhenick

I'd be very curious to see the age stratification on these studies. You'd expect score improvement with increasing age and experience if learning and social pressure are factors.

One of the things that's bothered me about Baron-Cohen's work is the implicit assumption that the traits of empathy and systemizing remain fixed over time, and aren't amenable to socially reinforced learning. It's well-known with ASD that gender has an impact on adoption of compensatory behaviors.

@Patienceltd I did actually read something about this very recently, and I believe you’re correct. I’ll try to find it
@markhenick interesting 🤔 always amazing when science can help explain things
@markhenick In other news, water is wet! :D
@markhenick @kathygriffin is that a learned survival mechanism for being able to exist in a male dominated society without murdering a middle manager with a Herman Miller chair during a staff meeting when they talk over them for the 4th time
@markhenick Did they really need a study?
@markhenick this is obvious to me especially if you extrapolate this and compare it with the data which shows men are more likely to commit violent crimes.. it makes sense that being unable to empathize and put yourself in another's shoes would lead to more violent outcomes
@cryptokitty @markhenick
I was thinking of the converse, I think?
People that can commit violence effectively do not need to consider others' feelings for any fear of having violence come at them. They can just be violent if it's required so the skill set is less useful to them
@RnDanger @markhenick if men = people who can commit violence effectively, for fear of having violence come at them... then men are more prone to being fearful than women?
@cryptokitty @markhenick
Sorry, I may have worded that strangely.
I think men are generally less likely to be empathetic because they can more easily resort to violence and expect a favorable outcome. Everyone else is stuck trying to be sure they don't trigger a violent man.
@cryptokitty @markhenick
But now I read it again and I think I see your point. I might agree with you, actually.
@cryptokitty I suspect that’s true to a degree. Another factor might also be that men are cultured to a normative version of masculinity that rewards violence and impulsivity. I’m not sure how long empathy takes, but that violence might happen before it even gets to the stage of whether or not to think about another’s shoes
@markhenick we needed a study for that?
@aliceonboard @markhenick
Just the guys that can't grok another's feel
@markhenick Because men are raised to suppress emotions and feelings so they block it all out.
@markhenick yeah I mean that was me before I realized that I was a girl. I was always shocked that other guys couldn't see what others motivations were
@markhenick
Ahh proof that men are indeed selfish assholes 😝
@donmelton
@markhenick what country did males score higher, and what does the data show about minorities?
@markhenick
It's almost like they have more need for these skills in their day to day than most men. (I left the 'do' out on purpose 🥲)

@markhenick @kathygriffin

Did they really need to do study for this? Ask any guy to tell you what his wife or girlfriend is thinking or feeling. We don't have a clue!

@markhenick We need to up our game my dudes...
@markhenick "Scientists, on average, are better than non-scientists at taking a tranche of behavioral data and inferring a truism that already informed their study with its sociological conclusions."
@markhenick I don't know if they're better at it, or if they just like to project their own emotions onto others.
@markhenick Needed a STUDY for that??? 😆 Have you ever lived with a husband, father, son or male person?
@markhenick Did any women need to read this article to know this?
@markhenick ok but lets stand that on it`s head as in Thailand they say the best looking girls are guys
@markhenick as ladyboys can walk in any shoes and know what others are thinking and feeling
@markhenick so that shows trans trump both males and females in that study, they hold all the cards
@markhenick I tried to put myself in my girlfriend's shoes, but they were way too tight.
