I am furious. For 10 days, Lakota Sioux have been snowed in and trapped in South/North Dakota. I just now heard about this. People are dying. Many have no heat, they can’t get food or fuel. They are burning clothes.

In America. In 2022. The National Guard was called out, *finally*. Unconscionable.

I am waiting to hear re: donations but this appears to be a start (not sure how quickly the goods can be delivered): https://friendsofpineridgereservation.org/a-blankets-quilts-comforters-donation-drive-for-pine-ridge-reservation/

US winter storm: Stranded Native Americans burn clothes for warmth

"We're fighting a losing battle," says Oglala Sioux Tribe's president as the reservation is cut off by impassable roads.

An update - just talked to a friend from SD. I guess the weather was bad enough that no one *could* go anywhere that whole time.

I’m still mad. I’m not convinced the govt did enough to help with keeping people prepped for this. Subsidized fuel, for example.

Update 2: looks like the National Guard made it out there thank God.

Also be wary of scammers. I felt comfortable donating at the link I shared bc they’re asking for blankets etc., and the 2nd link does appear to be the tribe’s official site as far as I can tell. But I’ve read iffy things about crowdfunding elsewhere.

PHOTOS: South Dakota National Guard delivers desperately needed firewood to Pine Ridge

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem sent the National Guard to deliver firewood to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation Saturday as the state grappled with deep snow and crippling cold.

@szattwellauthor ONE Spirit and Re-Member are legitimate relief orgs as far as I can tell, have you heard anything on those fronts?
@sal the first sounds familiar, nothing on the second. I’ve mostly just been following along on Twitter and came across the org. I initially mentioned (and someone also brought up the Rosebud reservation’s website).
Thousands trapped on Pine Ridge burn clothes for warmth in wake of storm

With a twinge of cold in her toes and a tone of concern tinted by exhaustion, Anna Halverson relayed the message: “We’re in a really extreme emergency down here.”

@sal oh whoops I didn’t even notice the mention! Thanks! I skimmed the article and then went hunting for other news coverage to see what was being said in national news. The other I’ve heard of in passing but didn’t look into it.
@szattwellauthor there are a lot of reasons to be mad about how the government treats the Lakota.
Muting this for now because I’m overwhelmed with notifications but thank you all so much for boosting and I hope we can make a difference for those suffering.

@marcibrinker thank you!! I hope it’ll help! I can’t imagine. It’s so cold even in Boston. And thank God I have heat and layers and all that. These people are way way out in rural nowhere. I come from an area sort of like that. This is another level.
@szattwellauthor it sounds so bad. I’m glad the National Guard is being sent in to help too. It’s so cold and that’s one of the most impoverished areas in the US.
@marcibrinker and most sparsely populated. I’m just worried that they’re already too late for a lot of people.
@marcibrinker @szattwellauthor I did too. I hope it helps. I hope the National Guard has blankets!
@szattwellauthor I've seen some folks on Native American Twitter suggesting we donate directly to the tribe: https://www.rosebudsiouxtribe-nsn.gov/

@picard I know 😭
@szattwellauthor have you come across any more news about how they are?

@szattwellauthor alhamdulillah. That's good. Thank you for the link 😊
@picard yes alhamdulillah - and sure! 😊
@szattwellauthor Why did it take 10 days for this National Guard to come out ? I am quite surprised.
@Skynight_2000 from what people from there have told me, the weather was literally just that bad until very recently. Idk what other considerations there were. I’m just still upset that the people were so vulnerable, which seems like an issue that the government should have been better on top of, given the history and poverty of reservations.
@szattwellauthor I can think of several reasons this particular governor waited to send the National Guard to help.
@legalquilts this has been my impression as well
@szattwellauthor
The worst is over. The national guard is there delivering fuel and plowing roads that continue to be blown shut. Thanks for caring. Fund a training program at the tribal colleges for heavy equipment drivers. Sinte Gleska University , Oglala Lakota University.
@AprilShowers99452871 I’m really glad to hear that they’re able to plow etc. now thank God. And I’m glad to have done what I could.

@stsparky ooh good idea to post the address like this - thanks!

@szattwellauthor
Meanwhile, in various parts of America such as Michigan and Mississippi, we can't provide safe drinking water to entire communities. Infrastructure is falling apart.

I think it's time to admit that America no longer counts as a developed nation.

@szattwellauthor I've had occasional connection with native folks from South Dakota over the years. I always tell white folks when it comes up, that to understand what happens there they need to start by imagining South Africa under Apartheid. I get so much push back and denial, but my friends I tell you, it is that bad.
