I am furious. For 10 days, Lakota Sioux have been snowed in and trapped in South/North Dakota. I just now heard about this. People are dying. Many have no heat, they can’t get food or fuel. They are burning clothes.

In America. In 2022. The National Guard was called out, *finally*. Unconscionable.

An update - just talked to a friend from SD. I guess the weather was bad enough that no one *could* go anywhere that whole time.

I’m still mad. I’m not convinced the govt did enough to help with keeping people prepped for this. Subsidized fuel, for example.

Also be wary of scammers. I felt comfortable donating at the link I shared bc they’re asking for blankets etc., and the 2nd link does appear to be the tribe’s official site as far as I can tell. But I’ve read iffy things about crowdfunding elsewhere.

@marcibrinker thank you!! I hope it’ll help! I can’t imagine. It’s so cold even in Boston. And thank God I have heat and layers and all that. These people are way way out in rural nowhere. I come from an area sort of like that. This is another level.

@Skynight_2000 from what people from there have told me, the weather was literally just that bad until very recently. Idk what other considerations there were. I’m just still upset that the people were so vulnerable, which seems like an issue that the government should have been better on top of, given the history and poverty of reservations.

The worst is over. The national guard is there delivering fuel and plowing roads that continue to be blown shut. Thanks for caring. Fund a training program at the tribal colleges for heavy equipment drivers. Sinte Gleska University , Oglala Lakota University.

Meanwhile, in various parts of America such as Michigan and Mississippi, we can't provide safe drinking water to entire communities. Infrastructure is falling apart.

I think it's time to admit that America no longer counts as a developed nation.

@szattwellauthor I've had occasional connection with native folks from South Dakota over the years. I always tell white folks when it comes up, that to understand what happens there they need to start by imagining South Africa under Apartheid. I get so much push back and denial, but my friends I tell you, it is that bad.
