Here I have maybe 10% of my following from the bird app and it’s just as active so it seems like maybe the algorithm kinda sucked
In the interest of balance the default mastodon app is pretty ugly! What’s the best third party app to use?
@lolennui I like Toot! so far. It’s worth the small investment, IMO.
@lolennui Tusky on Android is decent.
@lolennui I use tusky on my phone.
@lolennui I'm using Tusky on Android. Pretty happy with it!
@lolennui Metatext is another good option for iPhone, nicer interface than default app (though missing some of the “explore” options weirdly)
@lolennui
Tusky. By a mile. Not perfect - the website is still best - but the app to use is Tusky.
@lolennui Toot and Metatext are good for iPhone. Not sure about Android. I'm using Mammoth, which is better than the other two, but it's in beta testing still which means lots of little bugs.
@lolennui One thing about Toot that may be relevant is it doesn't show you Boost and Favorite numbers, just the labels.
@lolennui tooot on Android has a few features I've been missing on other apps, like seeing followers of the account from another site
@lolennui I’ve tried a few but I would recommend Mastoot for iOS that is available on the App Store. I’m also trying Ivory and Mammoth but you need a beta invite for those

@lolennui i don't know the "best" but i know what other people tend to recommend

iOS: metatext, toot!
android: tusky, fedilab

@lolennui if you’re on iPhone and have fast fingers, wait for the next @ivory alpha to drop

@lolennui

Maybe try #andstatus on android ...

Fedilab

@tallship @lolennui why would you put a Calckey hashtag, Fedilab has yet to add Calckey support :/

@lolennui I like the web interface .. but I haven't tried all the apps. I didn't like Tusky
Now with some more followers, combined with following a few dozen more accounts, it’s definitely more active than I expected
@lolennui I was just thinking about the uptick in activity.
@lolennui The pros and cons of being entirely in control of your own feed. It's pretty great once it's up and running though!

@lolennui
I'm sure you already know about this but using lists gives you custom timelines of only people on that list. It isn't retroactive but starts when you've put them on the list going forwards.

Also Tusky vs Tooot are two WILDLY different experiences. And neither sucks! They're just different for different purposes.

Also following # is a thing. Very listworthy.

I need to find out about groups. I bet you can do all sorts of fun stuff with that. 😀

@Homebrewandhacking @lolennui This is lovely, I was just wondering what lists did like a minute or so ago, this is super helpful, thank you. 😀

@OSCrane @lolennui hey no worries. This isn't Twitter. I also know how QT work on here using an app, so that's pretty cool.

It's just they were used a lot to spread fascist propaganda to attack me behind blocks so I'm hoping that is a social problem of dunk culture rather than something innate to QT being bad.

Basically will people spread fash agitprop to dunk or does QT make that happen?

@lolennui You aren't terrible to drive rage, so why would the algorithm promote you?

I'm glad you're here.

@lolennui i agree and also think that a significant portion of > 2 year old twit followers are dormant now
@lolennui I have about the same percentage of followers, and I think it’s more active here than on the other site, and that’s even taking into account @donmelton’s boosting of stuff.
@lolennui I have found a lot of new and interesting people here that I didn't follow on Twitter 💓
@lolennui big facts, the condos on here are also much more lively
@lolennui Ah, but how many paid ads do you lay your precious precious eyeballs on? After all, that was the only measure of the algorithm that they would care about, even Pre-buyout.
@lolennui I tried Pinafore on desktop and liked it. Only problem was that you need to refresh the page to get new toots to load.
@lolennui Same experience here. I am also following about tenth of previous and that is also good.
@lolennui agreed on that. No specific data but engagement is much better.
@lolennui Or 90% of the accounts on twitter were dead. This place is at its apex of activity, as measured by active/dormant account ratio, right now.
@lolennui Same here. I have 5% of my 22K Twitter followers on Mastodon and much more activity. Yep, the algorithm sucked.

@lolennui

Is nice that I can see a post, decide to write a reply to it later, and the actually be able to find it later!

@lolennui very noticeable now, great observation
@lolennui I am finding the same. On Twitter I got very little engagement even among friends I followed. I’m finding Mastodon works better. Just wish there was more hyper-local stuff on Mastodon but hoping with time that will happen.

@lolennui If you really want/need that bird site fix but for Masto, try https://elk.zone/

It's not a mobile app but dang fine web app

@lolennui the algorithm works, just not for *your* best interests
@lolennui Where would we be without algorithms…
@lolennui Or just AI/ML in general…
