@taylorlorenz Even if COVID was only as bad as the flu (it's much worse), who listens to the guy who brags about getting the flu every year?
@halfcocked @taylorlorenz To be honest, flu can also be very bad. In an average year, 50,000 people die of influenza. (I’m not comparing relative numbers of deaths between Flu and Covid.)
@batyalee @halfcocked @taylorlorenz And then there’s combining risk of flu, COVID, RSV and now Strep A, all at the same time!
@halfcocked @taylorlorenz exactly. It’s like they are trying to get us sick. Even if it was just like a cold, that’s still miserable and causes people to miss work or get everyone around them sick who may not be vaccinated or healthy. We should be trying to avoid getting sick as much as possible, not trying to see how many times we can get sick and live
@twitterreject @halfcocked @taylorlorenz nod even if everyone was just off work for a week or two it's a big disruption for business.
@Randomjeweler @halfcocked @taylorlorenz definitely. There’s a lot of businesses out there that can’t afford to close for a week and a lot of us don’t have any more sick pay. The govt ends nearly all the Covid support programs too in a few days so you’re totally on your own w/it. Seems like a really stupid risk if it’s easily avoidable w/just wearing a mask sometimes.
@halfcocked @taylorlorenz Most people don't even know what a real flu is, taking it for a simple cold (it isn't).
@taylorlorenz seems to me that people here on Mastodon are much more balanced and use their common sense.
@karllouis @taylorlorenz I think it’s probably not having an algorithm that pushes the alternative in your face at every moment to drive engagement may be part of the thing that makes Mastodon so much better.
@taylorlorenz Say it louder for the folks in the White House.

@taylorlorenz Here's the paper on excess mortality risk due to infection/reinfection.
https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-022-02051-3
Acute and postacute sequelae associated with SARS-CoV-2 reinfection - Nature Medicine

A new analysis using US Department of Veterans Affairs databases showed that reinfection is associated with increased risk of all-cause mortality, hospitalization and a wide range of long COVID complications in individuals who have had SARS-CoV-2 compared to those with no reinfection.

Nature
@JamesLundblad @taylorlorenz sadly, scientific research and studies are easily dismissed as propaganda from the anti-medicine community. They have watched countless people die at a rate of like 3x’s more for unvaccinated and they still refuse to believe in medicine. It’s pure politics exploiting by some very rich right wingers
@taylorlorenz the 1st time I had Covid it was the worst sickness I’ve ever had in my life w/months of issues. The 2nd time was mild bc of being vaccinated. I was very lucky for that. I don’t understand why anyone would downplay the misery this virus can bring. It may be mild but it might not. Even if it’s mild, it still feels like garbage. Nobody wants to get sick so if we can avoid it, then we should!

@twitterreject @taylorlorenz
Ditto for me. Got it in March 2020, 4 months off work, still kind of not full-time now (I am self-employed), still have issues with fatigue, brain fog, poor memory, stomach problems, etc.

Second time I had had vaccine and booster and it was mild luckily.

@twitterreject @taylorlorenz Wish I hadn’t caught Covid back in Feb this year. The brain fog lingers. Was on a Zoom yesterday - everyone was asking me to share my whiteboard, which they say I had said I would create for the team. I had no recollection of even discussing a white board. #COVID19 #BrainFog #Vaccinate
@Bwheatnyc @twitterreject @taylorlorenz that sounds awful and is my biggest fear about catching covid. I’m so sorry you have to deal with that.
@godlessmom @twitterreject @taylorlorenz It’s a daily challenge, especially regarding work. I have to write everything down or I don’t recall what was discussed. I’m getting better on vitamins recommended by my doctor but every day is a struggle. #COVID19
@godlessmom @Bwheatnyc @taylorlorenz the brain fog isn’t fun but if that’s your only lingering issue from Covid, you’re very lucky. There’s much worse things that it can cause like heart problems, breathing issues, neurological problems, and other conditions we haven’t learned about yet.
@Bwheatnyc @taylorlorenz I know what you’re talking about. I had the fog for several months after. Only things that worked for me were being active and pushing my brain to work. For example, not using a calculator when doing math or not writing something down that I needed to remember but rather trying to memorize it. I don’t know if it helped but the fog got better after 2-3 months
@taylorlorenz
Having COVID multiple times is no problem if and only if one has president level, pm level or royal family level health cover
@taylorlorenz Excellent article that explains long Covid very well. It's beyond frustrating that globally we are acting as if the pandemic is over when it's not. My husband had Covid last Nov. He developed shingles on his face, had a TIA in May of this year & still has some probs that no one has related to Covid. My nephew had a bad stroke (did recover) & they did say it was prob Covid related. I always wear a mask but very few ppl do which is not reassuring.

@taylorlorenz

No 'can' about it. It does so in every instance. One of the problems with media portrayals of the dangers posed by SARS-CoV-2 is that the ineluctable is portrayed as elective contingent on host vulnerability. Nobody gets this without being maimed even if the damage is not readily apparent. I've never read a study where whole brain specimens from long term convalescent cadavers were virus free. Samples from acute phase deaths are a different story--permeation takes time.

@taylorlorenz We Love You Taylor 💚❤️💚❤️💚❤️💚❤️
@taylorlorenz Spending on ventilation would decrease the transmission rate and we are not spending enough!
@taylorlorenz Excellent, accurate article. I wish everybody who commented would boost for visibilty! #MaskUp
@taylorlorenz
This is a great comprehension of many things I know by following experts. And we mustn’t forget… this is what’s obvious after only three years. Quite frightening to think about 10, 20 or 40 years later.
@taylorlorenz There are a bunch of Covid skeptics around Elon Musk. I think they would make interesting investigation subjects. Many of the VC tech bro guys seem to be being red pilled via Covid policy since the pandemic and interest rates have negatively impacted their profits.
@taylorlorenz so much this. I've had it twice now. My immune system currently resembles Bruce Willis at the end of die hard. #covid left me with arthritis, dry eye, dry nose and my eyesight got worse. That's with me being vaccinated etc.
@taylorlorenz this line "A responsible society cares for its young; a failing one does not." Gives the push I need to get back to masking. Thank you for sharing.
@taylorlorenz Holy shit, COVID is airborne? Why has no one told me about this?
@_Jordan @taylorlorenz Part of the reason COVID wasn't called "airborne" is because of the definition of aerosol was misunderstood by the medical community. There's a writeup in Wired, and NPR had a radio story too. https://www.wired.com/story/the-teeny-tiny-scientific-screwup-that-helped-covid-kill/
@U1F984 @taylorlorenz I’m gonna need at least a few hundred more “COVID 👏 IS 👏 AIRBORNE 👏” threads throughout 2023 then maybe I’ll be convinced, but I’m just not buying it yet
@taylorlorenz long haul Covid has left my oldest neice, 38 with three young children, with seizures and symptoms of Parkinson’s onset. Previous to it she was a runner with no pre existing conditions. She can no longer work or drive and my sister in law left her teaching position to help her. People refuse to see just how dangerous it is and it’s so frustrating.

@taylorlorenz If I were still alive I would be covered in booster marks and wearing N95s over all of my orifices.

Lucky for me coronaviruses cannot survive the Inferno of Eternal Damnation

@taylorlorenz I had it once, around 5 months ago and my sinuses are still messed up, heartbeat is elevated, lungs are tight, and have brain fog. I can’t tell you how many customer orders and even dinners that I have messed up in the past few months, never mind forgetting things within seconds or minutes. 😔 The “brain fog” seems like it’s getting worse every month, not better.
@georgiablue @taylorlorenz hang in there. Mine went away after a few months but I was extremely active and pushed my brain to work in situations where I used to not. I quit using a calculator and tried to avoid writing things down but used memory tricks to try to remember them. I don’t know if it did anything but mine was better after about 3 months. I remember the frustration. It was hard to work as a bartender. Odds are it will get better though
@taylorlorenz the whole “herd immunity “ angle seems to have backfired, spectacularly. Stay vigilant, stay healthy.
@taylorlorenz I got COVID on vacation in Florida, USA, August 2022. I was really tired for a day but really no other symptoms, except I started to get this catch in my throat. One cough clears it, but it's annoying and still exists almost 4 months later. Imagine if I'm stuck with it for life? How sad. Covid sucks. Nobody should take it lightly, avoid it if possible. #vaccinated

@taylorlorenz TY for posting. A key point, made recently by journalist Kurt Eichenwald, is #2, that COVID-19 is a *vascular* rather than *respiratory* disease.

I'll add: Looking out for each other, including the most vulnerable among us, is part of what makes us human. The "it's my choice" BS is the antithesis of humanity.

@taylorlorenz I had a relatively mild case and am still suffering daily migraines from it 6 weeks later!
@taylorlorenz we still don’t know the longterm damage it can or has done. That’s more likely a bill that’ll we’ll have to pay later.
@taylorlorenz Crematoriums are working 24/7 in China due to a so-called “harmless strain” of CoVid.
@taylorlorenz They're not "powers that be" they're cranks and quacks. How they get to influence discourse is mind boggling.
@taylorlorenz After 4 shots of Moderna, I eventually DID become infected with the virus, suffering miserably for 2 days, with full recovery in 2 weeks. However, a few months latter, I began developing kidney dysfunction, when none had existed before, along with atypical hypertension, despite already taking blood pressure medication. Long-term effects of COVID are still being discovered.
@taylorlorenz The virus wants to spread, maybe it's the virus inside the brain that controls their words
@taylorlorenz Okay, okay. I’ll start masking up again. Had every booster, latest flu shot and topped it off with the latest pneumonia shot.
@taylorlorenz We are quickly creating a whole generation of chronically ill people whose troubles and needs will be systematically disregarded for the their of their lives 🙃
@taylorlorenz
I got the heebie-jeebies watching President Zelenskyy's address to Congress last night... so few people were wearing masks.
@taylorlorenz
“Do not listen to powers that be who pretend that getting infected with COVID multiple times is now no big deal. They’re asking you to lower your guard for a nasty virus that can invade the brain, disregulate the immune system and damage the vascular system.”
@taylorlorenz
Thank you! We begin getting our info from fam & friends in health care, public health, epidemiology by eary 2020. Also experts on-line - including air flow studies in engineering.
Gov agencies are not the best communicators and have too many constituents.
@taylorlorenz yes and apparently the more viral infections you get in your sinuses the higher your chances of alzheimer's
@taylorlorenz I've had covid, and my health has never been the same since.
@taylorlorenz I’ve got vaccinated 4 times (over a period of a year, of course:) I also got covid while traveling . I’m aware that vaccine dont prevent one being sick but it does help reduce the damage. Covid was bad, not the worse thing, but bad, like a month of headaches after. I’m happy i’ve got vaccinated. I hate people being Idiots and acting like it’s just run of the mill’s flu. They put themselves and those around them in an unnecessary danger.
@taylorlorenz Even a mild Covid infection can result in a long Covid problem ranging from loss of sense of smell to brain fog or heart problems that can last a year or more.
@taylorlorenz I was exhausted for months afterwards. Now I’m just really tired. Like work all day take a 5pm nap at office just to get energy to go home and cook supper run errands etc kind of tired. I still nap at least 3 times a week in afternoon or at 5ish and sleep all weekend to catch up. It’s awful. My life is falling apart because I’m too tired to deal with or do stuff. Sure I can smell and I didn’t die from Covid but it still effed me up!

@taylorlorenz The question for me though is what else can we do long-term? Will vaccination and advanced treatments eventually beat this thing into submission, or will it continue to be debilitating for some?

I often joke that COVID is exactly like the flu, in that it is a dangerous new virus that the world failed to contain and created via bad agricultural practices and now is forced to accept as normal.

@taylorlorenz whatever happened to just not wanting catch anything? Before Covid nobody wanted to catch a cold, flu, or whatever. Now we’ve got people willing to catch Covid for political points. It’s pathetic, no matter how you look at it.
