Ugh, it’s only taken like 3 months but now I’m one of those “iPhones are better without cases” dorks
I still maintain you’re crazy if you don’t have a good quality screen protector though. I could handle the back being shattered to pieces, but a micro scratch on my screen would end me

@christianselig I don’t have a screen protector or case but I don’t have a single micro scratch on my screen

And I don’t care for my phones very well

@EshuMarneedi Ah I find they scratch pretty easily. My Apple Watch has a bunch somehow too
@christianselig Huh, interesting. I keep my phone screen down on tables and stuff and I have nothing. Except for last year when I scratched the corner of my screen so much that I had to get an express replacement because I couldn’t bear looking at it 😂
@EshuMarneedi Yeah exactly, the latter is what I worry about :p It can be fine for ages, and then the stars align and you're hosed. I'd much rather be able to just peel off a screen protector and go about my day
@christianselig Never had a problem (that I noticed!) on my phone, but my S6 watch instantly got a bunch of ugly scratches.
@tonyskyday @christianselig Same. I have never used a screen protector on an iPhone (had them since the 3G) and have never noticed a problem.
@tonyskyday Same my watch is terribly scratched, my Series 1 never had that problem
@christianselig literally going butt naked here. Never cracked a screen in my life
@tzeejay cracks are easy to avoid, a micro piece of something abrasive in your pocket not so much. I find the new screens much softer than the old ones, my Apple Watch has a bunch of micro scratches
@christianselig I have one scratch in my 13 Pro that I have had in it since the first or second week. It is only visible at a certain angle so it is basically not there at all
@tzeejay Yep that is horrifying and would literally keep me up at night, but I'm somewhat neurotic
@tzeejay I had a perfect record as well, until my XS Max (1 year into its life) fell face down onto a gravel path during a music festival. I replaced the screen myself out of shame and have not cracked a single screen since 😅
@christianselig peak design case and no screen protector is the way to go.
@christianselig peak design makes some really fantastic iPhone cases, sort of a fabric back and they actually improve the grip of MagSafe (plus all sorts of accessories).
@roisinmaeve Oh I get that, I just don't know how you protect the easy to replace part with AppleCare, but then leave the most looked at and fragile part completely unprotected 😛 You are a brave soul
@christianselig it’s a texture thing. I’ve hated the feel of every single tempered glass screen protector I’ve ever tried. They always feel off and get gross around the edges.
@christianselig no protector, no case. I’m a risk taker
@christianselig I can’t stand screenprotectors. I do have some scratches on my screen (one a bit deeper) but I don’t notice them. It’s only visible under a certain angle.
@JoshuaL I'd try a good quality, thin glass one, I can't really tell much of a difference (especially with the new flat iPhones where they just cover the whole surface). Scratches though, them drive me crazy
@christianselig what’s the one you’re using at the moment? I might give it another try!
@JoshuaL Wow this is even cheaper than I remember, but I like it a lot. Thin, goes edge to edge, and comes with an instalment guide that makes it brainless to apply perfectly https://www.amazon.ca/ESR-Tempered-Glass-iPhone-Pro-Military-Grade/dp/B0B6VBSKKT/ref=sr_1_9?keywords=iphone+14+pro+screen+protector&qid=1671648130&sr=8-9
@christianselig @JoshuaL I’m always amused by products that use words like “military grade” and “ultra tough”, yet they’re breakable enough that you better get 3 in a pack.
@christianselig I’m starting with nothing on the Phone and ending up with Case and screen protection. It’s a damn high quality daylie driver, and I don’t wanna feel or look day by day for this little scratch on the left corner in direct sunlight. (There is nothing atm 🤞🏻Maybe a little bit crazy but so what. It have to stay for 3-4 Years.

@christianselig I managed to put a micro scratch in the screen protector of my last iPhone about two weeks before my 14 Pro Max arrived.

Worst two weeks of my life*. 😆

*okay, not quite…but close.

@christianselig I don’t have a single micro scratch on the 14 line, I think they covered that well.

I just use a case outside of the home and go caseless inside – I leave the wallet on the case too

@matthewcassinelli I've heard a few on Twitter say the exact opposite, lots of micro scratches and that the new screens seem softer so they crack less easy. I'm not rolling that dice!
@christianselig @matthewcassinelli I would love to go caseless and remove my screen protector (which I've heard can affect front camera quality?) but the 12 and 13 were the first iPhones I ever had that got visible scratches on their screens. I don't think I can trust a naked 14 Pro!
@ericleamen yep, don’t trust nothing, especially my clumsy self. Otter box Commuter case, front glass protector, and rear lens protector too.
@christianselig Interesting. I’m pretty religious about keeping my keys in the other pocket, but also mine is pristine still. I handle it with care though
@matthewcassinelli I don't think keys would do it, more so a single particle of something abrasive makes its way into your pocket somehow and suddenly you're hosed
@matthewcassinelli @christianselig The phone absolutely gets an exclusive pocket. No case or protector here and no scratches on my 14 pro yet 🤞
@christianselig yeah I got a micro scratch on my iPhone 12 Pro right after I got it when I was taking pics for work (had it screen down on a clean surface i thought). Pissed me off lol. Screen protectors on after that
@matthewcassinelli @christianselig 13 was pristine for me and so far 14 as well. No screen protector or case used. Apple must have done something as I’ve had micro scratches on all other iPhones previously
@christianselig My iPhone 14 plus is unbearable to hold without a case, I have it bundled up in a supcase UB pro case and screen protector where it is more secure than I am in life
@christianselig but as long as the scratches aren’t visible when the screen is on…who cares? 😜
@sporez When your device is lying beautifully on a table like a product shot, and then you look over and the sun illuminates all the scratches, I die inside
@christianselig haven’t ever used one, never got any major scratches (if at all) — only put it in a case when going outside home.

@christianselig I dropped my iPhone 14 Pro caseless, face down on concrete (no screen protector) and the edges took more damage than the screen. Zero micro-scratches that I can see.

Not that I'm suggesting you do this, of course, but...

@particles It's not the falls that get you, putting it in your pocket and a single particle of something abrasive got in there, and then pulling it out you get micro scratches
@christianselig I'm aware of this risk -- I've been doing this since the iPhone XS and haven't experienced micro-scratches on anything after the 12 series!
@christianselig I’ve dropped my 14 two times last Friday night because… I guess you can figure out why. To my surprise after checking under a spotlight there’s NOTHING !
@Bluewall It's the sliding in and out of pockets the one time something abrasive finds its way into your pocket that will do you in :p
@christianselig ah fair ! I’m the kind of guy who always have a messenger bag with a pocket only for the phone lol
@christianselig I’ve only experienced micro starches back on my old iPhone 3GS . Every other iPhone has never used a screen protector and has a completely flawless screen.
@mingistech I wish I could say the same, I've had it pretty bad with modern phones if I don't put a screen protector on them, and my Apple Watch looks like a cutting board
@christianselig interesting how people can have such different experiences with the same hardware.

@christianselig

YES. But it has to be a screen protectors that doesn’t have a notch cutout.

@christianselig what screen protector would you recommend? Glass or plastic?

I stopped using them about when I got the iPhone X because I didn’t like swiping up over the edge of the protector all the time. I’d be open to trying one again on my next upgrade.

@digitalqualms Glass for sure, swiping across plastic just ain't the same
@christianselig unlike the other replies here, I actually have lots of micro scratches, but I can’t see any of them when the screen is on, so 🤷🏻‍♂️
@christianselig I don't know why, but my iPhone refuses to use screen protectors. After some time of using them, it starts bubbling near my volume buttons and keeps growing.
@that_leaflet If you have one of the newer flat iPhones, get a screen protector that comes with a drop in alignment guide, you just line it up and release and it's perfect. Never had an issue.
