Ill be posting some past work on here, seeing the great response from my current project. This is an 1959 IBM 1401, 1:16 scale, scratch build, 100% hand made
@6502B it wouldn't take too much more work to make it actually function like the 1401 <3
@6502B "I've heard of microcomputers but this is ridiculous!" 🥸
@6502B I'm in love with this. Where can I learn more?

@6502B
Beautiful!

I really want you to do the entire Mad Men office.

@6502B ...run by a raspberry pi board hidden under the floor, which is a thousand times more powerful than the original computer.
@6502B "someday, all this will be small enough to fit on a table"
@6502B oh, wow. I worked with machines like those in 1980! The tape drives spun up and made a sploop! sound when the vacuum pulled in the leader when mounting a tape. Geez, seems so barbaric now but was awesome-cool back then.
@6502B That is amazing! I love the look of those old computers.
@6502B Feels like @kenshirriff would get a kick out of this
@6502B Wow! Beautiful work. I thought, at first, this was an advertisement from Back In The Day!
@6502B Wow. Neat! I've written code on an identical machine to your model. In Autocoder, of course.

@6502B

Is that one of those microcomputers they keep talking about?

(But seriously, this is gorgeous.)

@6502B Wow! This brings back memories of when I was a kid....my father used to work in the computing department of the University of Toronto on what might very well have been this system. I only remember a whole expansive wall of these tape drives running.
@6502B Okay, now I'm picturing mice wearing black-rimmed glasses and white lab coats, reading printer output... 😄
@6502B does it have any functionality?
@6502B holy smokes, is that ever fun? This would be a really neat theme for a Lego Ideas set…
@6502B "Look up. Look waaayyyy up. We're on our way over to the castle where Rusty will help me change out a tape for the requested job, and we will use the terminal to load a new program (kids call them "apps" these days) into the mainframe.
(Only Canadians will get this reference)" 😆 Seriously though, this is incredible!

@6502B

That is absolutely awesome.

@6502B
Without the hand it would have looked like the real thing. So wonderful.
@6502B One to install in the hitherto unseen basement of @HarrietMaker's workshop!
@6502B that’s delightful to see!
@6502B
I like the fact, that the tape in your fingers is just a little bigger than transistors used in the real 1401
@6502B That is INSANE! Fantastic detail!
@6502B Looks like our former computer room - except that we had waste baskets filled to overflowing with write rings from the tape spools.
@6502B I kind of want a Lego sets of mainframes now.
@6502B Wonderful build. And now I'm listening to Jóhann Jóhannsson again.
@6502B This looks amazing. As someone who has been a computer enthusiast since the early 80's I would of loved to have seen one of these machines in action.
@6502B This takes me back in time, as this is one of the first computer systems I worked on at the Netherlands Intitute of Brain Research, although not a IBM 1401 but a 1410 in the early 1970’s. The first one was a IBM 1620, a truly antique in all ways. How times have changed!
@6502B a wonderful attention to detail. I found myself looking for the rack of 9-track tapes, ah memories.
@6502B have you gotten it to boot linux yet?

@6502B love this and I would like to boost your pics. Could you add a description for blind people?

I don't want to pollute the timeline with blanks for blind people.

@SebastienK not sure how to add description to pictures on the web client, i ll look into it

@6502B @SebastienK see, for instance, https://medium.com/@TheAnalyticalLeft/mastodon-editor-box-by-someone-who-didnt-create-it-7c93c6c9c792#96b8

You can click on the No description button added to provide the alt-text.

Thanks in advance!

@juandesant @SebastienK yeah I figured out how to add it, but its not possible to edit it afterword, at least on the web client. I can edit the post, but not the description
@6502B @SebastienK you cannot do it for existing images. If the post image is easy to find (or you can download it first from the toot), you can delete it and add it back, and then you have the chance to change the description/alt-text.
@6502B Is the woman sitting at the keyboard and man standing over her available separately? 😂 Very great work 👍
@6502B The art of miniaturisation is special and lovely. Watched a short series on UK tv where competitors were set different tasks each week and in teams they also had to decorate a room in the style of a given era. Just amazing work.
@6502B @moorejh I loved the 1401. The University of Rochester gave me pretty much free access to theirs when I was a high school student because all the power users had shifted their attention to the shiny new IBM 360
@6502B That’s a beautiful bit of work!
@6502B love it! Reminds me of my days as a kid doing an internship at EDS while in middle school. They had these and I was in awe... My how things have progressed.
