Actually, the tax returns of all Supreme Court justices should absolutely be made public. That should be a requirement to be one of the nine people with lifetime appointments who make final legal decisions for the rest of the country.
@charlotteclymer 🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯
@charlotteclymer I agree, especially as there seems to be no ethics oversight or process for SCOTUS.
@billkav @charlotteclymer This exactly! They seem to enjoy more unfettered power than any other official, including the Senate or President and get away with more. There really should be better oversight for all of them.

@charlotteclymer

It feels gross that it isn't the norm.

If you want to hold public office, show what you're up to.

@bastage @charlotteclymer Right, fear of political opponents weaponizing malfeasance against them should make all officials behave ethically and would deter those with bad intentions from entering public service positions.

@charlotteclymer

Exactly! Seems odd that it's not something already required for SC. So much of our government has relied upon good men/women being ethical. And now the weakness of the system has been painfully exposed by the unethical lunacy of maga

@jayk2116 @charlotteclymer I am unsure if it has relied on good men/women being ethical. In my mind it is more that it has relied on unethical people being stymied by other unethical people who are worried about how the first group might prevent them from enacting their plans and it continues in a loop.
Now that loop is breaking
Or maybe I am just very cynical
@BrokerDestroyer @jayk2116 @charlotteclymer
It relied upon the fact that they were all wealthy white men, and wealthy white men all trusted each other to keep their best interests at heart.
@joeinwynnewood @jayk2116 @charlotteclymer I think my point is:
From personal experience - wealthy white men love to fight with other wealthy white men. Everyone else are just the pawns they like to use
@BrokerDestroyer @jayk2116 @charlotteclymer
No doubt you've seen this, but I always hesitate to extrapolate personal experience to the wider world as it most often falls before data.
That said, accepting it as true for the moment, they still wanted/want boundaries for their battles and they trusted their peers to respect the established boundaries.
Anyone failing to do so would be set upon by the group, reestablishing the rules, and yes the rules for them and the rest of us were never the same.

@charlotteclymer

Yep! Who would have thought? We were so trusting all these years.

@charlotteclymer All our constitutional officials should have their tax returns made public upon entering office. President, Vice President, Supreme Court Justices, Senators and Representatives.
@charlotteclymer IMO the tax returns of anyone holding public office (elected or appointed) should be made public. If someone doesn't want their tax returns to be public, they shouldn't run for office or accept the nomination for an appointed position within government.
@charlotteclymer Either It should be done on a yearly basis or we need term limits.
@charlotteclymer All federal elected officials or candidates, all presidential appointees or nominees. And automatically released by the IRS, not a mandate on the individuals.
@abulsme @charlotteclymer Clarence/Ginni Thomas apparently β€œforgot” to report over $100K in Ginni Thomas earnings. Truly pathetic. SCOTUS should be required to furnish tax filings yearly as well as yearly audits

@charlotteclymer

Totally agree....this should be required... Congress should work on this....

Activists push for disclosure of clients and income of judges’ spouses - POLITICO

@walkonh20 @charlotteclymer Agreed. Supreme Court / Spouses / Family need scrutiny
@charlotteclymer the illigitimate SCOTUS is above the law
@charlotteclymer We've got to elect Congressional Legislators that will enact comprehensive ethics rules & regulations for SCOTUS, including mandatory b/g checks & financial info, too.
@charlotteclymer since the public can't vote them in/out, it's a lifetime appt, and impeachment seems, shall we say, unlikely: what difference would it make? are you hoping something outrageous in a return would sway senators beyond predictable party lines? that certain judges wouldn't want to be nominated for fear of returns being made public? not being snarky... maybe I've gotten too cynical? just feels like the last few cycles demonstrates things are pretty past ethical norms.
@Lahoff @charlotteclymer Actually, I think you can hold their family accountable and you can tie them collectively up in procedures and court.
@charlotteclymer Any government official should be required to release tax returns. If they can't manage their lives, how can we expect them to manage our government?
@charlotteclymer why stop there. Every Single Government employee should have to. these people work for us the citizens of this country
@charlotteclymer Absolutely. Having the IRS release tax returns should be law for people up for election/appointment to the Presidency, Vice Presidency, Supreme Court, Cabinet, and Congress.
@positron @charlotteclymer We really need to rebuild the IRS. Kind of beleaguered and depressed as a Org these days as they are the fav GOP punching bag.
@rwether2022 @charlotteclymer Yeah, even more so I'd say first fix the ridiculous tax code and simplify the problems that the IRS (and we) have to deal with. Definitely want to reform the IRS, but no matter what happens the GOP is going to resist any action or institution that pays for anything in any way. Government raising money in any form is against Republican philosophy.
@charlotteclymer couldn't agree more on this.
Where is the accountability for the justices?
@charlotteclymer @smooz absolutely. I would say they should be for all members of congress too, house and senate
@charlotteclymer anyone in public office. We should know how much skin they have in the game.
@charlotteclymer And Republicans treat it as Mutually Assured Destruction. They must know some of the nine are corrupt...
@charlotteclymer yes!!! They should have to file financial disclosure documents every year
@charlotteclymer Would be waaaay better to get rid of the "lifetime" part of those appointments. But since we are no longer capable of amending our founding charter the design of which assumed that it would be periodically amended....yea it does seem that kludges is the most that we can aspire to anymore.
@charlotteclymer this shouldn't even be controversial.
@amtwo
@charlotteclymer Right! I’m like, I don’t see the problem. Let it all hang out!
@charlotteclymer @MicheleV_AK you know Charlotte is here? πŸ”₯she was one of the first i found.
@charlotteclymer in this future, privacy is a luxury few afford
@charlotteclymer they should have nothing to hide.
@charlotteclymer I agree, though the Conflict of Interest form is being filled annually. What about spouse return, if you are filing separately?
@charlotteclymer This should be done for ALL political officials...OR wear a suit coat with all sponsors so we know who bought them!
Follow me for any news and let's grow mastodon 😒
@charlotteclymer Here in #Finland and #Sweden all tax filings are public (with some restrictions). I can call up the tax office and ask how much money anyone made last year (earned + capital income) and how taxes he/she paid. I will get the sums, but not the whole filing. https://www.vero.fi/en/About-us/finnish-tax-administration/data-security-and-information-access/public-information-on-taxes/public-information-on-individual-income-taxes/

@charlotteclymer Also, if a justice or their spouse was involved in a conspiracy against the US government, there should at least be inquiries into impeaching said justice.
@charlotteclymer the same should go for all elected and political appointees. The citizens have a right to know what possible conflicts of interest they might.
@charlotteclymer
Imho I think any public employee should have to as well. As well, add real time reporting of donations to parliament members.
@charlotteclymer Every tax return of every public official should be made public domain information. The only exceptions I can think of is the CIA who relies on secrecy to carry out operations.
@charlotteclymer - You mean 13 justices, I’m sure? πŸ‘€
