@straphanger this is wonderful. I have always wanted to upgrade my tires for the winter. I have to upgrade my bike, mines is more of a racing bike. I need one that can handle NYC streets .
@farf01
I know what you mean. I got a winter-friendly and city-friendly #bike a few years ago and it made a big difference. Winter tires still rock, of course!
@straphanger Great Initiative! One next step for Sweden could be to allow bikes on the national and international SJ-trains.
@straphanger I'm totally in favor of Governments increasing the number of people that take non-car based transport. Cars (and the required roads) take up so much space!

@straphanger This is awesome!

🚴
🍺

@straphanger Giving out free useful things in America causes palpitations among a certain set of our populace. What #Sweden is doing is a good thing!
@smit9186 @straphanger yes the current administration would probably say it was communism 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@straphanger Nice! I ride a bike all winter, too. But it's not a mass phenomenon in Belarus. Unfortunately... We almost doesn't have a bike infrasructure even in Minsk...

This photo was taken yesterday in a city park area, which is very popular with cyclists in the summertime.
@straphanger Amazing. I am happy that I learnt how to bike even in the winter in Vienna (i.e. how to maintain some warm comfort) but I am still afraid to do that on snow. :/
@catominor @straphanger it's pretty unsafe without the proper tires. That's why this is so cool.
@straphanger
When the going gets slippy, studded tyres!

Attached: 1 image There is no need to stop your utility cycling when the weather is icy. Fit a pair of studded tyres & keep on riding.

@straphanger: Nice, but why using the link tracker from the Birdsite on the Fediverse? Please just don't!

Actually they might even block the redirector to work if the "Referer" URL comes from a Fediverse site in the future.

@straphanger How do these tires cycle when there is no snow? We have only sometimes slippery conditions in the Netherlands (last week the roads were iced and VERY slippery). One year I had winter tires on my bicycle, but those where slippery when the conditions were normal, just wet roads.
@straphanger Studded tyres (#spikes) are great, but novices should mind:
1. For maximum traction, particularly on frozen tyre tracks left by riders before you, use the _minimum_ pressure specified on the tyre.
2. When getting off: your shoes have less grip than your wheels, particularly on black ice, so take care not to slip on your feet.
3. Regular salt is aggressive to your frame, bearings and other metal parts. Rinse your bike with water after riding on salted ways.
@straphanger Concerning #3, consider asking your municipality to use potassium formate (DE: Kaliumformiat) for defrosting, which is less aggressive. It's used on airport runways - and in the capital of winter cycling - #Oulu.
@straphanger That’s awesome! 💌 to 🇸🇪
@straphanger Those are the ones I use, too!

This is fabulous!
I used to think that the UK was an enlightened, progressive country (well, it was the 1990s), and I now laugh at my younger self.
This is a great scheme!
Can you imagine this in the UK? You'd get car drivers complaining about "entitled cyclists".
@BintyMcFrazzles @straphanger actually no. It’s pedestrians that complain about entitled cyclists. Especially when they are the victims of a #closepass by a cyclist.
@straphanger Aha! I had wondered how people cycled in the snow and ice.

@misswired @straphanger actually if it is cold enough snow and ice gives a fairly good grip.

It is when the ambient temperature goes above zero the surface starts to melt and then it gets really slippery.

@straphanger Thats no small commitment. My winter tires were very expensive.
@straphanger can I have that in 700x25?
@straphanger
If they provide Ice Spiker Pro like in the pictured, that's a 120€ gift and the most intense cardio training ever. These tires have the highest rolling resistance ever.
@straphanger @drcarolinebrown having just completed the transport survey for Scotland, I read this and try to imagine local government in Edinburgh ever being this lateral in their thinking.
@straphanger
Did you see this @BrentToderian ?
A project in Sweden called Winter Cyclist 420 people will get free studded bike tires and reflective vests if they ditch driving in favour of cycling this winter for at least three days every week.
@straphanger My wallet is jealous, but still beats the price of driving.
@straphanger Could I join this from Finland if I asked real nicely? Studded tires for my bicycle cost 199 € a piece… 🙈
@straphanger Lovely Schwalbe Ice Spikes by the look of things. I have some myself on my mountain bike for the rare occasion in the UK when we get bad snow.
@straphanger
Wow, what a nice idea, I really like that!
@straphanger according to the article it’s a trial for up to 420 people only, but a nice idea for sure.

@straphanger

When I cycled on unplowed streets in Missoula, Montana, when I was a grad student, I could really have done with a program like this! I was so poor I couldn't afford to buy tires like these, and I risked my life every day I cycled to the university.

@straphanger this might be the only program that would make Minneapolis Mayor Frey popular… on second thought, not even this. Great program!!!
@straphanger ah WoW- echt gut?! Warum gibt’s das nicht bei uns.
Endlich im Schnee auch locker Fahrrad fahren !! Ich bin begeistert
@straphanger So eins benutzt meine Frau am Alpenrand auch :-))
@straphanger nice! I used to have a pair and despite being the cheapest ones I could find, they were pretty pricey. Would have been awesome to get them for free!
@straphanger I’ve been cycling 20km round trip to work recently in #Stockholm in temperatures of around -8C. The city prioritizes commuter bike lanes and they are so well kept that I haven’t even needed to switch to winter tyres. It’s very impressive.
@straphanger I had to buy mine on my own for Salzburg... :D
@straphanger how efficient is that!! It will definitely increase the number of cyclists in the winter. There are good things happening, but here and there, not being implemented widely. An example is the Plan Velo of Paris. I wish Germany would implement such a plan in cities.
@straphanger they’ll need really warm coats, hats, gloves, all the good winter gear, too!
@straphanger That's pretty awesome. Remember too, you can get a significantly better grip in snow and ice on a bicycle by running a lower PSI pressure, which will increase the surface area between your tyres and the surface you're riding on thereby giving you a better overall grip.
@straphanger That's the way to foster a change from dominance of cars to climate neutral commuting. In Germany instead snow is pushed to the bicycle lanes as car lanes have to be freed from snow, and there is no other space... 🤮
