Another spike incoming!

Looks like today's spike is the largest in a long time -- and this is why we're all experiencing lots of slowness and performance issues.

Even my small instances are being affected.

Looks like this could be a sustained spike.

5,000+ new accounts are being registered hourly

If trends remain as they are, we may break 9 million Mastodon accounts this week.

Continuing to monitor sign-ups, we not only see that 5,000+ hourly sign-ups persist, but also that it is *entirely* feasible that Mastodon could break 350,000 account sign-ups this week.

If that happens, we may break 9 million accounts this week -- and we'll definitely break that within the month.

@atomicpoet what I find more important is the "active users ratio" from here:
https://the-federation.info/

Just look at that one-day spike. It's not the new accounts that are causing the slowness, it's the old, inactive accounts that suddenly got reactivated.

This is fantastic news, I feel. These are returning people, who dipped their toes in the water before, and now they're ready to really jump in.

@rysiek @atomicpoet their poor website - seems like it may be experiencing the hug of death.
@rysiek That website is not so accurate, but the chart is eye-opening.
@atomicpoet no data about fedi is "accurate". But the data on that site is reasonably solid, I find, and consistent across time.
@atomicpoet Those those sharp valleys in the active instances, what do they mean?
@yuki2501 @atomicpoet those are in the toots per hour, there when people go to sleep. 8-)
@atomicpoet What's happening at those points in the graph where the number of users drops rapidly?
@jobrnd @atomicpoet that is users *added. The light green background is users which continues to steadily rise.
@jobrnd @atomicpoet The downward spikes appear to just be missing data, since they seem to go all the way down to zero, and immediately return to the previous level

@atomicpoet Google says that Twitter produces 34 million tweets per hour.
We are currently at 80 thousand per hour.

Still have a ways to go… but the growth is real. And the impact every time Musk does something stupid is obvious.

@chrisale @atomicpoet

I’m still hearing about 80% of the voices I want to hear. When we see these massive volume numbers for Twitter, I have to think about 50% of that is troll or bot volume.

@atomicpoet the Musk Poll isn't inspiring confidence in the future of Twitter.
@atomicpoet how many accounts were there in Oct. before Musk took over?
@atomicpoet Us furries are taking over :-p
@atomicpoet how is it relative to the November one(s)?
@joelitics Not as big as when the Twitter mass firings happened.
@atomicpoet Anyone know why the spike is happening now?
@atomicpoet Never mind. Just read about Musk's new policy
@atomicpoet Still a long way to go to match the peak (I think it was around 10K/hr?) but definitely stronger than for the last Musk fart from a couple of days ago.
@oblomov @atomicpoet the peak I saw (and shot) was 13.3K/hr on November 18th
@atomicpoet I'm on a large instance and things are getting SLOW, like the best days of the first #twittermigration . Thinking seriously about creating a Mastodon instance for friends and personal use.

@josemiguelcastillo @atomicpoet Good idea, but don't judge things to quickly. The system is responding to a huge surge right now. This is not normal operations.

#twittermigration

@rubicon @atomicpoet yeah, it is slow but working... and the fediverse was able to grow much more a few weeks ago, when many many more people came here, with the existing infrastructure.

My idea of creating my own instance is more of a nerdy/techie interest 👍

@atomicpoet I noticed my CPU usage go up also thanks for the heads up. I guess we need to teach more users how to make their own instances out of their already existing business email for their friends and family or we might be stuck with fatty bills. If I have to move my instance in my house so be it but I'd like to keep linode their shit is easy to use
@atomicpoet growing us sometimes painful but su much rewarding in the ed! We did the tight thing #twittermigration
@atomicpoet
What did he do now?

@Brynawel @atomicpoet

Well the recent TOS change is tantamount to declaring you cannot use Twitter to network outside Twitter, basically the one thing Twitter was built to do.

@atomicpoet only really benefiting the select few instances tho
@used2no What do you mean by benefit? As an owner of multiple instances, I'm quite glad that everything is operating smoothly on my end.
@atomicpoet How do you generate these graphs?
@lukevalenty I don't. Hover your mouse over the pictures to see who generates them.

@atomicpoet
Where are you getting those graphs?
@atomicpoet For those who are asking what Elon did this time, Twitter Support sent notices that linking to other platforms will not be allowed.
@atomicpoet Fantastic, gotta find more willing participants to grow the infrastructure! Ideally off of cloud providers (like my own instance), once I get fiber at home then it will be moved on-premise.
