If you're still on Twitter, go into your settings and delete your phone number from your account, if you've added it. If you're using it for 2FA, switch to an authenticator app instead
@micahflee That means loosing access to the developer API right?
@micahflee Done! I probably put it off for far too long, but thank you for the reminder to get it done!

@micahflee could you elaborate on the reason?

My concern is that once we have given it to them, deleting it could be pointless. I don't trust them to really delete it.

@micahflee
Security key is better than the authenticator app, and Twitter does have good security key support.
@micahflee On Nov 30th, after not having a phone number on my Twitter account for years, I was suspended until I added a phone number. I was un-suspended when I added one, and re-suspended every time I deleted it, which I tried three or four times that day and possibly into the next. In the last few days, I was able to delete it again, and my account has not (yet, anyway) been re-suspended. I second the recommendation of auth app (or security keys, if you have them) for 2FA instead of SMS, which is subject to SIM swap.
@micahflee Thank you.
Any other suggestions on deactivation/deletion are appreciated.

@micahflee

Just a warning. With the 3/4 drop in staff, 2fa has been breaking on the regular. Some people have not been able to get into their accounts for weeks now.

@micahflee Micah, they required our phones for bluecheck verification -- back when it was real, I think. I realize he's likely phasing us out anyway, but will it remove the blue check if we delete the phone?
@aravosis @micahflee
Just a regular user here and I got my account locked a few days after I removed my phone. Bye birdsite.
@madrobin @micahflee Interesting, well I removed mine, let's see what happens.
@micahflee What is an "authenticator app"?

@micahflee Thanks... done.

Why particularly the phone #?

@micahflee authenticator app is considered safer in general, on Twitter or elsewhere
@micahflee but then ask yourself: why are you still on Twitter????
@micahflee I’m currently locked out of my Twitter a/c because I’ve changed my phone and can’t access a back up code for 2FA. I changed my password because my timeline keeps filling with these tweets. Managed to enter user name and password but stuck at 2FA. No reply from Twitter support and no idea how to get rid of these tweets which are now reposting here because I’ve set my tweets to appear here. I keep deleting them here.
@micahflee Done. Using Google Authenticator for 2FA (was previously using my Google Voice number).

@micahflee

...and then you cannot log in anymore b/c #eLoon wants to know your #geolocation.

I was purged...and I always used an authentication app, never my phone number (thank goodness!)

@micahflee When I tried that (summer), it locked my account until I re-added my phone number.

A letter I drafted to the FTC but didn't get to finishing + sending https://docs.google.com/document/d/17GEEDRdh-mcqzKuT0QTqn8np6r-pvg3D/edit

Dear FTC.docx

(Letter drafted, but not completed or sent) August 20, 2022 Dear FTC (etc) I am writing to draw your attention to a unfair and deceptive business practice by Twitter. The situation Friday, I was using Twitter, as per normal, when my account was suddenly, inexplicably, put into a state where ...

@micahflee

I have never used a phone number for twitter. I use a throwaway email(s) to make various accounts on different social media platforms. The day General (Maor) Wise Ass vanishes from the platforms is the day I will delete the throwaway emails, too.

@micahflee

They locked me out of my account saying I have to verify which I do but then say it's wrong despite it being right. I was an early leave my forwarding address to Mastodon on my bio which I presumed is why I can't get back in to scrub everything but my username which i want to keep there parked taking up soace but not giving them any algorithm to sell.

@micahflee I’ve already stripped my Twitter account down to the bones and locked it and deleted the app. BUT the thing I am kicking myself over at the moment is that I set up a Post account, and during the set up process I think I was required to give them my real name and email address and my old Twitter handle. So now Post has a way to link me to all that data. This feels like a big mistake on my part, given what I’ve since gathered about Post. And I don’t even use Post.
@micahflee trying to understand the comments but no one is explaining why. I have 2FA on all of my Twitter accounts
@micahflee you're assuming deleted informatiom doesn't get kept
@micahflee I left Twitter but have really not been able to gain traction here. I wasn’t huge but did have close to 4,000 followers but can seem to figure out how to get a small voice like mine out there. No interest in feeding the beast that has become Twitter. Sad to see it destroyed when it really was a good place for instant information. #twittermigration
@Gnomester210 @[email protected] What kind of voice did you want to get out there? Bob likes to get his bark out there sometimes. Humans dislike it.
@Gnomester210 @micahflee interaction is the key here. There are no small voices, just voices. Respond to people. You will grow. No algorithm, everyone sees all of us the same.
@micahflee fyi- I had to use the desktop version to switch to Duo. Mobile app kept giving me an error loop.
@micahflee If you're still on Twitter, leave. Your legitimizing a propaganda site.
@micahflee for what reason? Deleting it hides it from you but not from admins
@micahflee
OK - I'm outing myself as someone who doesn't know much about tech stuff, but I really don't understand how an #authenticator app works or why it's better than using a phone number. I'd really appreciate it if someone could explain in not-too-techy language πŸ™

@micahflee

thank you! πŸ––πŸ½

do you have privacy protecting recs for mass autodelete of tweets? I've seen several but didn't seem like some experts deemed them ideal.
