How to Use Mastodon, the Social-Media Platform Blocked by Elon Musk’s Twitter

Mastodon could be the future of social media—if you can figure it out

Wall Street Journal
@danielhep I really dont understand how any journalistic enterprise could remain on Twitter given the editorial hammer Musk is now wielding
@Brklynmind @danielhep has he been silencing anyone? Censoring posts of independent journalists?

@ceesaxp

Yes, he's suspended several and banned one, for questions they asked during a "Twitter Spaces event."

And today he banned several other social media companies from having a Twitter account, including Mastodon, Post, Facebook. Instagram and on and on.

@ceesaxp @Brklynmind @danielhep self-proclaimed free speech absolutists have their limits!
@Brklynmind @danielhep This can’t be said loud enough or repeated often enough.
@danielhep WSJ was my first citation in a leadership coach training case study… facts about the last year Twitter profited, and how much Elon paid for the company with him (prematurely) saying it could go bankrupt… I appreciated the coverage for case studies late Oct thru late Nov, esp since the sense of urgency was totally validated when Elon made the employees sign NDAs… that was very predictable based on his (lack of) strategy rather purposely, it seemed.
@danielhep This is an important milestone in the migration from that bird site....
It might seem a small thing, but it's mahoosive
@danielhep
They will be all in when they self host their Mastodon instance. As all media worldwide should.
@danielhep Great news, but lots of things are missing and the claim that mastodon is a lot like twitter is misleading to those who expect algorithms to do things for them
@danielhep @Gargron That is the way to go. An open, decentralized social network / microblogging service like #mastodon also gives news organizations a lot more freedom how to operate, pusblish news and interact with its customers.
@danielhep I don't see this as "going all in". There is no link to an official WSJ account on Mastodon, just that of the author. The social media links on the site are to the know centralized big tech sites not to mastodon.
@danielhep
"Don't use the [DM] feature [...] they could be read by anyone who runs (or hacks) the server"
as if that's not true for literally any other major social media platform
@danielhep they should definitely make their own instance
@danielhep It's good that they're taking interest... but what an excruciatingly badly presented web page!
@simon_brooke @danielhep Yep, I gave up on it. I'll read it later on my desktop-pc where I have the tools to tame the beast.
@danielhep Before you know it, WSJ will have set up their own Masto server. Must be peanuts for them to maintain the thing and have all their staff sharing their work from there.
@danielhep
Typically when an alternative to these established systems launch the first obstacle is exposure , the second is persuading potential users that it is viable and third that it is worthwhile moving. The third is perhaps the hardest. Chicken and Egg scenario.
Despite my earnest pleading - so many acquaintances still use
: - Whatsapp , Facebook , Google search , Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat , TikTok and many more with little to no regard for their privacy
@danielhep
I hope their next step will be all in on moving away from Google and AMP.
@danielhep I’m old enough to remember when the WSJ had a reputation for integrity
@danielhep
Rupert Murdoch: libertarian authoritarianism
Elon Musk: ...
Rupert Murdoch: not like that
@danielhep Still feels weird seeing all the warnings about DMs considering the same problem exists everywhere else too.

@danielhep Cool, but I'm disappointed that people are still reporting that Mastodon's direct-messaging feature is unsafe when Twitter DMs aren't end-to-end encrypted either. Mastodon is just more honest than Twitter about where it can still improve.

It really disturbs me how insufficient research leads to those honest being punished for being honest while those who just scoff off the risks get treated as if they're more secure.

I kindly emailed Joanna, let's hope she reads it and responds :)

@danielhep There goes the neighborhood
@danielhep Thank you for posting. It wasn’t a how to for using, though. More like a what it is and it’s features. I’ll have to find a user guide somewhere if I plan to stay. 😞
A guide to getting started with Twitter alternative Mastodon

How to get started on social-media site Mastodon, whether you're leaving Twitter or just looking for people who have.

The Washington Post
@danielhep i look forward to seeing the WSJ set up an instance with a $9.99 subscription fee

@danielhep Would be great to make it easier to people to run their own instance to help to decentralize and scale more the network.

On Joining Mastodon - Whither news? - Medium

An academic friend asked for help joining Mastodon. I wrote a detailed email in response that I thought it might be useful to others. I’m also going to teach a master class in Mastodon at my school…

Whither news?
@danielhep not sure how I feel about ANY Murdoch publication being all in on Mastodon.
@danielhep
Every news organization should be building their own Mastodon instances and at least having all their reporters cross-posting there. Otherwise, they're just agreeing to be constantly blackmailed by Elmo.

@danielhep

I’m not fond of the WSJ, especially the editorials, but glad to see they’re making the move.

@danielhep The bite-sized slideshow is not paywalled. The actual story is, though. (I read it via #Apple News: https://apple.news/Abo5eOBO3TL2s-0TomutoQg)

And I wouldn’t say the entire #WSJ organization is going “all in on moving to #Mastodon.” Reporter @joannastern is posting here. Her bio mentions “ @WSJ “, which is a nonexistent account on her server and probably copied from her #Twitter bio. If the WSJ were “all in” they would at least have an account, if not their own instance.

Don’t Have $44 Billion for Your Own Social-Media Network? Try Mastodon — The Wall Street Journal

As Elon Musk takes over Twitter, many are checking out this alternative. It could be the future of social media—if you can figure it out.

@danielhep Does Elon allow links to this piece on Twitter?

@danielhep

To quote SpaceBalls: "oh shit, there's goes the planet."

@danielhep Maybe Mastodon is like a lot of people would wish Twitter to be? So let's join Mastodon and make it the social media platform we are looking for.

@danielhep
But be careful! According to them your direct messages can be read by the server admin or anyone who hacks the servers!.... uh... just like Twitter. (although they left that last part out) 🤷‍♂️🤔

On a side note, that site was very confusing to navigate on mobile, making it very ironic that they keep mentioning that Mastodon i'd difficult to figure out... 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️
@rysiek

@danielhep @spfannenschmidt just really wish they wouldn’t have added the “if you can figure it out” jab. It’s just like the free email 90%+ of people use for their personal lives.
@danielhep well done. Thank you. Sincerely, a newb😊
@danielhep Most objections to Mastodon are UX: reading that DMs aren't encrypted is something that needs to be fixed IMO but nothing smart people can't solve in time. People just need to know Mastodon DMs aren't encrypted and use them accordingly. The other UX stuff will be solved with different "Themes" for Mastodon server Web GUIs and other apps. This is an opening for Google and Apple and Microsoft IMO.
@danielhep Does it annoy the crap out of anyone else that a large part of American media and social media is openly manipulated by an Aussie and a South African.
@danielhep No paywall? That's serious business for them!
@danielhep I feel like this is what companies will have to do so they can protect their journalistic integrity. As Twitter continues to sink like the Titanic, more and more journalism outlets will need to find a life boat. The more time that passes, the more credible news sources will be making the #twittermigration

@danielhep

They will be all in once they have  in their social media links.

@danielhep welcome to Mastodon everyone! muahahahah!

@danielhep Wow a great step!👍 I wish some of our local major newspapers or companies or community would take a similar approach and leave the Birdside  .

Mastodon Transit Authority
@danielhep The Murdochs would see Musk as a rival and threat to Fox. Let’s se if WSJ does its own Mastodon instance.
@danielhep sus for sure. Considering how the WSJ basically hates anything that isn't geared towards making money.

@danielhep

They still don't have a Mastodon account or instance.

@danielhep going to tweet a link to this article, let’s see if Elon starts blocking this as well
@danielhep
thanks, this is great. I shared over on the other site...
@danielhep I got a paywall clicking "read the full story"
@danielhep @johnmaher Going to be cool to see their journalists on a WSJ managed instance (I hope)…
