@Eliot_L will do, thank you very much for sharing this resource!
@Eliot_L Update: I DMed the person who runs this list and did not receive a reply about getting us added. Too bad, but thank you for trying to help.
@britt I'm at home here on tech.lgbt but I consider yours to be a kindred spirit
@ryangermann I love that instance! It’s where I setup for a while before eventually launching this space.
@britt I may spend some time learning more about what it means to be on an "instance"... in terms of the "Local" feed, would you say diversity of "subject" would be an issue? I mean, I don't have a lot to post about games myself, so I kind of think 'higher level' w.r.t. where I 'set up shop' so to speak... maybe that attitude is... perpendicular thinking?
@ryangermann you’re welcome to open an account to see how you like the Local feed, zero pressure. You’re also welcome to talk about a variety of topics, it doesn’t need to be gaming exclusive — I sure know I do, haha.
@britt I'm still pondering the analogues to email here: I don't yet understand those implications. Lord knows lots of people have given Elon Musk a decade of blackmail fodder.
@britt I mean just imagine if Elon did the analysis on any "anonymous" accounts and followed the breadcrumbs and doxxed the people behind certain high-profile provocateur accounts? In some countries, they'd be arrested and murdered. And no I don't think he's above that. He has contact info and IP Address info for all accounts, he can match anon accounts to real peoples accounts, and just release that info. Twitter users in authoritarian regimes must be terrified right now.
@ryangermann ah, yes, I see. Tou have 3 feeds on Mastodon. Your Home feed is everyone you follow, that doesn’t change per server. Then Local/Community feed is posts from people on only your instance (which is why a lot of ppl recommend ppl spread out into smaller instances to help decentralize and help ppl connect better), and the Federated, which is one big gigantic feed. Hope that helps!
@britt Thanks... that part I do understand... but how would it be maintaining multiple "real" accounts on multiple instances? I can be logged in to multiple instances I know, but if I post on one, there may be cases where it would make sense to post on BOTH or... does the federated-ness take care of that? I would follow myself bidirectionally and that's like "auto cross posting to both instances"? and is that GOOD, or "spammy"? That's what I'll need to figure out.
@ryangermann ah, ok, I hear ya. I mean, personally I think it’s up to you. Your followers may be different on the various accounts and may not see it as spamming. I don’t think I would.
@britt I just don't want to be a "bad fediverse citizen" by doing stuff that's frowned upon. I just need a course on fediverse etiquette maybe :-)
@ryangermann
If you check out the bottom of my timeline/wall whatever we are calling it here, I have a bunch of general information about fediverse history, etiquette, and helpful tips posted.
@ryangermann @britt I'd argue that only having one account on one server is frowned upon. How are you suppose to know which place you fit in the best unless you try out a few places?
@britt Can I have accounts on multiple Mastodon servers using the same e-mail and username? I'm still trying to figure out how all of this works...
@cgquarterly you sure can! You can also transfer around instances if you want to keep your current follows/following. It’s super fast and easy. We have some directions at https://mstdn.games/about if that will help :)

@cgquarterly @britt Yes, you sure can. However you can follow anyone from any account, so the only real reason to have multiple accounts is if you want to see a server's local timeline without following people on it?
@jay @cgquarterly that is correct. Some people also like to separate their content, posting about say… literature on one instance, and gaming or gardening on another. It really depends. FWIW, I hold 3 accounts lol
@jay @cgquarterly @britt for whatever reason, the cross-follow feature seems a bit lacking with mastodon? Say I find someone on here that I share a lot of mutuals with back on other social sites. I click on their profile, follow them, but are unable to see who they follow or who follows them. Feels like not being on an instance with someone can limit who you’re able to find on mastodon? I really am enjoying most aspects, but I’m struggling with this one.

@PerkFGC
So this is bad from a UX perspective, but there is a weird difference betwehen seeing people on your feed in your instance and clicking through into their page on their instance.

You can't see some data in your page, but you can still click through, open their profile on their instance and access that data. In some cases you then need to manually copy/paste or input the stuff you see there back on your search to access it.

There are some tools to bypass it but it's pretty weird.

@MudMan that makes sense. I’ve also noticed some apps handle it differently? One of the apps I’m trying let’s me see the first half of the persons handle but not their server. Legit no way to find them with that info lol. Definitely lots of variance on some things but I get that it’s still new, or at least new for a lot of peeps.

iOS definitely feels hamstrung with its app selection. I see why the web was recommended over the apps.

@PerkFGC Yes, some apps will automate some of this, as will some extensions.

Handles are truncated in mentions but on the default web app not in profiles or under the name on posts. I use the web app pinned to home on mobile so I don't know if other apps do that as well. It'd be bad to always truncate it, since the first part of the handle is not unique.

You should always click through to the profile before following anyway, because verification is only seen there.

@PerkFGC @cgquarterly @britt

a) Make sure you click through to see their account on their (remote) server. Your local server will only have info on them that it knows about, so for instance, someone may have 50 posts made, but if the server has only seen 3, you will only see 3 until you click through to view their account on the remote server. Then you will see all 50 posts, their followers, etc... Usually, there's a link or something on the profile to say "click here to view their full profile on the remote server" or something along those lines.

I have not tried this yet, but there's an extension that you can use that eliminates this extra step as far as I am aware. You can check that out here: https://mastodon.social/@mmasnick/109532913088221650

b) Some instances allow users to decide to hide followers/followed as well as the actual number of followers/followed too. I'm not using Mastodon right now but a server named Akkoma which does allow those options (but I don't use them, personally).

c) You should be able to find and follow anyone on any other server with the exception of servers that your server may have blocked (defederation/fediblock), but that would be usually in rare cases.

Let me know if you need more help, it's no problem.
@britt hmm I'll have to think about it. maybe some of the streamers I watch would come over 🤔 (still so many people I wanna see over here but idk how to get them here or on pixelfed even....)
@britt what's the character limit you guys have per a toot?
@webfeline it’s currently at the default 500.
@britt aw shucks :( would love to join but 500 is way too low for me
@webfeline I understand, and that’s the beauty of Mastodon, you can find the right fit. We’re a new instance and just getting a feel for what the community wants. We recently ran a poll and about 90% of users wanted 500 or 1000 characters. Not that it’ll never change, just leaving it for now as we’re small.
@britt looking for the day your instance will have enough characters for me /gen
@britt But if I'm reading this, I probably already have an account! o:
@Cher many folks have more than one, or transfer around for a more focused Local timeline. I personally… have three… so I can interact and view different local timelines for specific interests or topics.
@britt that defederated list is impressive. Have a copy up somewhere for download, by chance?
@twipped we started here, then followed recommended lists we found across the Fedi. https://joinfediverse.wiki/FediBlock
FediBlock - Join the Fediverse

@britt Perhaps this is also something for #secondlife and #opensim and other gamer? Then we would be all on one platform and connected with the whole fediverse?
@britt Is your account registered in the directory of https://fediverse.info/explore/people?
fediverse.info

The bespoke fediverse guide and people directory.

@RadiantBlack it is not… I’m a bit timid to add it.
@britt why? 🤔
@RadiantBlack because I don’t feel important and don’t want to call attention to myself. I’m a shy person naturally.

@britt
ok, I hadn't thought about that.

Somehow I thought more about the instance than about a single person. Maybe there should be a pure admin or news account or something for that.

Or more instance members need to sign in there 😊

You could start a call to the instance members, or the hint that users can register there. 😉

@RadiantBlack I’ve elected to create the account @Status for server-specific news.

I see stuff like this as healthy for the Local feed. Just browsing the websites recent submissions under ‘gaming’ and it looks like a few here have already signed up, likely from just seeing your post about it. :)

@britt want to chat about your instance on @acrossthefediverse ? Our Jan 11 ep is talking some different instance admins about their experiences.
@britt Being able to use :1up: is tempting; not gonna lie 😅
@britt thinking of switching tbh but not sure how to do that…

@britt

Can I create an ID over there while still retaining my aus.social identity?

@britt

I am not a game player (I get headaches playing computer games). But I am an amateur videographer, and I would love to post some of my videos on Mastodon. These are of performances by friends at Scottish Games and the MD Ren Festival. If that would interest you I will figure out how to move my instance.

@BertL you're more than welcome to create and account and check things out if you'd like. It's entirely up to you :)
@britt I'm super new but I would like to join please? But also, how do I do that? I'm a big gamer. It's my fave thing to talk about even when I sound like an idiot to the other 50-somethings at the office. I just don't know what you mean by joining, if you'll have me. Thanks!
@varahntet hey there! Please visit our server website at mstdn.games to request an account. Once you've done this, you can login from a browser or app of your choice.
@britt I won’t join as I think it’s in my best interest to stay in a game dev space but this community seems super cool. I’ve boosted to try and help. We need more communities like this in the fediverse, more folks chatting about games.
@britt @svenja Yay!!! Welcome, mstdn.games, nice to have another themed instance. All the best for you all there 😍
