Hi everyone! I guess we're doing this social media thing from scratch? OK, here it goes:
I'm a reporter @ProPublica writing about worker safety & migration. Sometimes I'll dabble outside this universe. I'm looking forward to figuring out how this platform works. If you have any pointers, I'm all ears.

@kartikay @ProPublica. I haven't heard anything lately, but apparently Oklahoma got a number of Afghan refugees and I have no idea how they have fared. I happen to live in the district of Oklahoma City that has successfully absorbed a large number of Vietnamese refugees, starting in the late 1970s. Putting Afghan refugees in the rural part of any former slave state, including Oklahoma, looks really foolish. Thanks for your work.

@kartikay Welcome! The main differences between this platform and Twitter is that here it is a good idea to use hashtags more, because that's how people find things that they are interested in; there's no algorithm that decides what people should see. For example, the posting I'm responding to could have used a few.

I'm pretty new here myself, but here's what I've been able to figure out.

Follow people and hashtags. They'll follow you back.

Engage with others, don't just post to provide links to your stuff.

That's about it. Everybody I've met here has been nice enough.

Also, careful mentioning this place on the bird site...it tends to throw Elon into a rage.

@kartikay @ProPublica we can't resettle people without affordable places to put them. Sometimes the rural communities have the right price points and volunteers the big cities don't.

@kartikay @ProPublica welcome! Big difference here is that you drive your own algorithm. Reboost often, follow frequently, engage a lot and you’ll be there. Like a manual transmission changing gears, heading up a ramp to hit the highway.

My heart is racing after reading your article. Omg, an Afghan refugee family assigned to rural Missouri! Land of the KKK, MAGAs, etc. This is heartbreaking. Nearby southern IL is similar. Our town motto is "Arms Wide Open". I so want to paint underneath: If you are a white christian nationalist. After reading this, maybe I will.

Priority one is man's emergence from self-incurred immaturity. Otherwise aid to war refugees is all but imaginary. Safeguarding human dignity must be the foundation going forward, checked & balanced at every point of interaction with the weary & vulnerable.
