Musk is already mining internal corporate communications to smear people, and if he isn't in the DMs yet he soon will be. DMs on Twitter should not be used, and you need to warn people to assume that allies of Musk will read any message sent.

dolores quintana@caseynewton I don't know if he botched it, so much as he has just continued his personal policy with bots. The LA Times says he has his own personal army and I believe it. I've been bot swarmed twice in one week when I responded on one of his threads.

@caseynewton several orgs are already doing this, EU has their own server for its govt officials, Internet Archive runs a server for its employees, the main benefit is automatic verification, also you set the rules, own your data, don’t have to worry about moderation much as it’ll be just people from your org, and basically be unbannable.

Santiago Pardo@caseynewton This is spot on. I’ve been arguing that depriving Twitter of engagement needs to be the objective.
The ‘stay [on Twitter] and fight’ crowd misses the point that their engagement is Twitter’s lifeblood. Deprive Twitter of your engagement and see Twitter wither.
This can be achieved many ways; we may have different plans that work for each of us, as Casey does here. Hopefully an alternative platform e.g. Mastodon can gain critical mass and take Twitter’s place.
Andy Cameron@caseynewton Would be keen to hear the different strategies from your readers for replacing Twitter. In my case, Twitter effectively became my replacement for an RSS reader, the place I find/subscribe to much of the journalism I read. There’s not enough sources on Mastodon, Post etc. to replace that use case yet. Can we get Google Reader resurrected? 😂

I like that you have a good optimistic/pragmatic balance to how you view tech. It is a thread throughout your work. So when you're saying the place has gotten untenable, that's a sign of how bad things are getting.
