@caseynewton nice to know you’ll keep hanging out here for the time being 😊

Very important post from @caseynewton on "Why it's time to start leaving Twitter behind"

I recommend reading the whole piece:
https://www.platformer.news/p/how-elon-botched-his-war-on-bots

"Now, awaiting Musk’s latest tweets, I find myself anxious that one of his former employees could be physically assaulted or worse... I don’t want to provide, even in the smallest of ways, a respectable backdrop against which hate speech against my fellow LGBTQ people, or Black or Jewish or any other people, can flourish."

@marcidale @caseynewton The same should apply to religion. When people continue to support belief systems rooted in hate, violence & genocide, they allow harm against women and racial/sexual/religious minorities to flourish.
@caseynewton So nice to see you here casey!
@caseynewton looking forward to reading. I’ve slowly used Twitter less and less. I removed a ton of follows. It’s mostly just news sources for me now. It just became to toxic and negative.
I’m enjoying it here. I really hope it catches on.
@caseynewton appreciate your thoughts here, Casey. Found myself nodding throughout – using the site feels consistently uncomfortable now.

@caseynewton Fantastic reporting, as always. Thanks for the inside scoops.

"The email was sent to members less than an hour before they were scheduled to have their first meeting since May."

Classy as always.

@caseynewton tw "moving faster and more aggressively than ever before" is a catchy euphemism for combustion. But a cesspool seems a better metaphor rn
@caseynewton spitting absolute fire in the Leaving Twitter section.
@caseynewton I see in your platformer post that you plan to keep DMs open on Twitter. Don't! Musk is already mining internal corporate communications to smear people, and if he isn't in the DMs yet he soon will be. DMs on Twitter should not be used, and you need to warn people to assume that allies of Musk will read any message sent.

@caseynewton
@prannon

Look if you can't afford an artist to do an article header image for you, just leave it out.

@caseynewton While I understand yet another social network, I hope you actively enjoy your time here on mastodon.

Your reporting in this issue was heartfelt and I feel the same as you about how leaving twitter is akin to a divorce. You’re so fortunate to have the Platformer audience to yourself. Many (including me) don’t have that luxury.

@caseynewton nice to find you here in the safety of the #fediverse.

Cheers.

@caseynewton I don't know if he botched it, so much as he has just continued his personal policy with bots. The LA Times says he has his own personal army and I believe it. I've been bot swarmed twice in one week when I responded on one of his threads.
@caseynewton I actually was logging in more than I wanted for your coverage on Twitter so thank you for heading out (gonna go figure out how to link my platformer account to discord)
@caseynewton You will find this place enjoyable and a little less stressful than the other place.
@caseynewton thanks for the thoughtful piece, Casey.
@caseynewton
Excellent read today. Kinda sad, but philosophy has to change at times.
@caseynewton Wow. Big changes for you. I thought I might be overreacting when I bailed, but I don’t want to support Musk. It’s been hard to replace Twitter as a news source. I’m using RSS to view the feeds of some follows, but I’m increasingly able to get their stuff elsewhere.
@caseynewton lol hadn’t heard about this yet, possibly because I’ve already mostly left it behind. incredible
@caseynewton It’s hard to imagine where Twitter will wind up after all this.
@caseynewton Hey everybody! Good news! Casey is here!
@caseynewton The assumption there seems to be that Elon seriously wanted to wage a war on bots -- an argument which depends heavily on facts not in evidence.
@caseynewton Welcome! The only thing holding Mastodon back other than the obvious convoluted sign up and follow process is that people haven't committed to posting here.
@caseynewton I guess in the new regime they don't test features on pre-production
@caseynewton excellent piece. Kyle Rittenhouse showing up in my feed, without me asking for more nazi murderer content, was what got me off Tw last week. If we double this place two more times it’ll be an awesome alternative.

@caseynewton @dsilverman

“The thing is, there have always been good reasons to quit Twitter. From the beginning, people found that the platform was too distracting, too depressing, too polarizing, too addictive. It riled them up and brought them down. It shredded their attention and made once-common tasks, such as reading books, feel impossible.

Quitting Twitter is, in fact, the default outcome for anyone who ever created an account.”

👆spot on…

@caseynewton Is Zoe going to make the move here as well?
@caseynewton I know you grudgingly came over to the fediverse, but it really can be a great place. I certainly love it here.
@caseynewton I don't understand why at the end of the article you sound almost resentful about being on here... or why you want yet another centralized service.
@caseynewton You can count me as another loyal follower on Mastodon, Casey.
@caseynewton Quite the sobering article. As you say, there's it's morally questionable to stay on the birdsite at this point. Musk has turned it into a toxic waste dump.

@caseynewton your latest mailer mirrors my exact feelings about Musks insanity over the weekend.

I deleted my account last night, and I feel great about it!

@caseynewton how big is platformer? Maybe you could run your own server, something like platformer.social
@lgtm hmm interesting

@caseynewton several orgs are already doing this, EU has their own server for its govt officials, Internet Archive runs a server for its employees, the main benefit is automatic verification, also you set the rules, own your data, don’t have to worry about moderation much as it’ll be just people from your org, and basically be unbannable.

@caseynewton
I know you’re not crazy about mastodon, but damn I’m happy to see you here. I noped out too.

@caseynewton This is spot on. I’ve been arguing that depriving Twitter of engagement needs to be the objective.

The ‘stay [on Twitter] and fight’ crowd misses the point that their engagement is Twitter’s lifeblood. Deprive Twitter of your engagement and see Twitter wither.

This can be achieved many ways; we may have different plans that work for each of us, as Casey does here. Hopefully an alternative platform e.g. Mastodon can gain critical mass and take Twitter’s place.

@caseynewton Would be keen to hear the different strategies from your readers for replacing Twitter. In my case, Twitter effectively became my replacement for an RSS reader, the place I find/subscribe to much of the journalism I read. There’s not enough sources on Mastodon, Post etc. to replace that use case yet. Can we get Google Reader resurrected? 😂
@caseynewton thoughtful piece, especially on how to go forward using twitter content where it can't be monetized by them.
@caseynewton are you planning to engage here actively, or is this just an account for announcements? Love your work!
@alasaarela going to mess around on here a little and see how it feels!
@caseynewton The beauty of this place is that the conversations feel more human, because they are more comprehensive and less emotionally triggered, with no trolls around to ruin the conversation.

@caseynewton a great post (as usual)!

It was the extra push I needed to leave as well. Thanks

First day on Mastodon 👋

@caseynewton Speaking of which, could you please convince Zoë to join Mastodon as well? We need you all here.
@caseynewton "How Elon botched *" seems to be a useful template for a headline about most anything they undertake.
@caseynewton Great article Casey. Your podcast is excellent as well
@caseynewton This was a good piece. I found myself thinking today that this felt like a bigger departure than some I've seen. I like that you have a good optimistic/pragmatic balance to how you view tech. It is a thread throughout your work. So when you're saying the place has gotten untenable, that's a sign of how bad things are getting.

@caseynewton

can you please explain what you don't like about Mastodon? maybe you have done so somewhere already...
