I love this one about #FreeSpeech from https://xkcd.com/1357/

That.

Free Speech

xkcd
@stux It is the perfect reply.
@stux The hover text n the original is great too: I can't remember where I heard this, but someone once said that defending a position by citing free speech is sort of the ultimate concession; you're saying that the most compelling thing you can say for your position is that it's not literally illegal to express.
@stux I have a link to that comic on my instance's About page, it's just so good.
@stux
In the west we pretty much rely in J S Mill for our definition of free speech: "If all mankind minus one were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind." [On Liberty]
That comes with a proviso of "professing and discussing"
In which case free speech refers to a transaction - a flow and testing of ideas.
@stux
reference is often made to the "harm principle" as the sole grounds of limitation of freedom of speech. But Mill goes on to differentiate between mass thought, powerful only in numbers and "higher eminences of thought" - so, whilst we are all free to speak, there seems to be a duty placed on some to make themselves heard above the crowd.
@stux
It would be interesting to have posts about freedom of speech from beyond the anglophone sphere of influence and traditions.
@stux perfectly said!💋🍷😷
@stux have this one bookmarked and have shared it hundreds of times. Sad how many people don’t understand what censorship means.
@stux I worry about who gets to say what is "good speech" and "bad speech"? I mean within the law of the land of course. We have hate speech laws for a reason. Getting booted from a platform is fine if the the platform clearly and consistently states and applies the rules (this is hard, as we know!). If the rules simply follow what a the mob of the day deem is good vs bad then this is troubling. This is how we end up with echo chambers. None of this is easy...

@jga @stux

Well, you do.

If you’re the server owner, or if someone’s in your home, then it’s entirely up to you.

You decide what good speech is.

Take care.

@siegi @tursiops besoin d'une traduction en français pour FSN? 😇 Ça pourrait entrer dans la documentation.
@stux What was the alt text on this XKCD comic? Feels like it would have amplified the mic drop in the last panel
@stux which is a reminder to say thank you for all you do to keep things safe and palatable here. Bedankt uit de VS!
@stux is this what happened to Elon at Dave Chapelles gig?
@stux this is/was my ‘go to’ xkcd whenever some idiot yelled free speech.
Freedom of Speech does not mean freedom from consequences.
The other one was 1150 which was about Instagram but works for most types of hosting/media.
@stux One of my all time favourites.
@stux Showing you the door BTW is also a form of free speech.

@stux

For my Finnish followers: same goes for Finland even though our legal system is very different from that of the US. Constitutional right to free speech means freedom from censorship. It does NOT mean right to say anything without any consequences.

@stux Bad OCR on that, explainxkcd.com has transcripts which are good for this.
@stux I don't love it. I think it lets us off the hook. In letter, yes, free speech as enshrined by the 1st amendment protects us from the US federal government. But what does free speech look like (in spirit) in our other communities and groups? Can a family have free speech? (You can tell your parents a hard truth without them cutting you off?) Can a friendship have free speech? Can a workplace? What does it mean to believe in free speech day to day?
@stux it really is excellent
@stux i love that this seems to be a thing our American friends missed when reading their own Constitution and complains when they are fired, shunned or face any type of repercussional. Price you pay for free speech.
@stux I wish more people understood this.
@stux XKCD. Aren't they just the best?
@stux
You really think this wouldn't be that difficult to understand, but... alas...
@stux I wish I had access to share this with my colleagues prior to my retirement.
@stux
Although it is really funny. Especially after what happened to Musk, I do not like it. In my eyes, the first picture is wrong. You can say things, you should be arrested for and you will. When you announce a price for someone being murdered for example. And in many countries there is much more. Laying, offending and so on will offer you a fair chance of being arrested.
@stux This seemingly is showing a white space, and it is not the comic in line on Mastodon, at least on my app. I know exactly the one you are talking about and the one you link to, it's just not appearing in mastodon's feed.
@stux Twitter leaves the building

@stux Best part to me remains the hover:

"I can't remember where I heard this, but someone once said that defending a position by citing free speech is sort of the ultimate concession; you're saying that the most compelling thing you can say for your position is that it's not literally illegal to express."

@jwsgeek @stux Came here to post this, but you already had it :)
@stux or elon musk doesn't like you. Or a gang of trolls mass report you because you are not in their group-think bubble.
@stux I use that cartoon as a reply to every post I see that gets the First Amendment wrong. ;-)
@stux The plain and simple truth…
@stux Maybe this cartoon will boil thing down for all the knuckle draggers who cry “free speech” when getting banned on SM for spewing lies and hate.
But who are we kidding? They are brainwashed cultists. It may take a generation or two to rinse the traitors out of our democracy. We STILL have mouth breathers who fly the confederate flag & wish the south won & kept slaves.
This is how damaging MAGA and Trump cult has been to our country. The orange stain will be hard to wash off.
@stux I wrote a little poem with a similar sentiment.
@stux I've never heard anyone say it better.
@stux what in the heck is going on with the alt text for this image?!
@stux I feel like I repost that classic almost every month.
@stux In the case of Elon Musk, it is showing themselves the door.
@stux yep!! It’s called Accountability Culture…☺️ #accountabilityculture
@stux Somebody send this to Musk.
@stux Worth repeating (daily, apparently)
