dear god it’s really rancid over there. the stuff I’m used to seeing on later banned accounts or on stormfront
@joshtpm at what point do you leave Josh? Posting anything at all is just giving fuel to the feed. Creating impressions and giving him runway.
@Jsalvo thinking about it
@joshtpm @Jsalvo Josh, if I may suggest tagging Apple, Google and Amazon on all those rancid posts.
Basically, “You guys cool with this? Just checking what the market share of Nazi’s you guys are trying to advertise to.”
@ygadinthesix @joshtpm you think they haven’t noticed? There’s no tweet you can hit publish on that’s gonna fix it.
@Jsalvo @joshtpm think of it as a brand safety brute force attack.
@ygadinthesix @joshtpm @Jsalvo
This is exactly what needs to be done.
Also Screencap them first because they might be deleted eventually.
And a screencap with a timestamp allows the companies to see how quickly Twitter acted (or didn't act)
Musk is planning on using AI for content moderation, but the trolls are very clever and learn how to outsmart them. Musk fired the people on the Trust and Safety who can figure out the tricks & dodges of trolls.
@spocko @ygadinthesix @joshtpm the companies know. Your tagging them isn’t persuading them, it’s just creating more impressions. Impressions that goose Melon’s usage stats, which make it more valuable for advertisers. The one thing you can do to break that cycle, is JUST. STOP. TWEETING. That’s it. The only way to win bird site war, is to not play bird site war.
@Jsalvo @ygadinthesix @joshtpm I hear you. I looked up the contacts at those companies and send them emails. Also, I suggest using the same methodology as what Trusted Flaggers will use in the EU.
Explain what the illegal content was, when it was posted. Then the actions or non actions by Twitter can be tracked
@ygadinthesix @joshtpm @Jsalvo #StopToxicTwitter is tracking leading Twitter advertisers and updating our effort to get them to stop - worth checking the list as it is updated. https://www.stoptoxictwitter.com/

We are a coalition of organizations calling on Twitter advertisers to demand a safer Twitter for their brands and for users.

Stop Toxic Twitter

@joshtpm @Jsalvo

We keep wondering why you even bother in the Twitter Post-Musk topic in The Hive. Pretty clear where he is taking it.

It is bizarre, sort of like Bruce Wayne suddenly wanting to hang with the Gotham criminal underclass. He really does not seem sane at all.

@joshtpm Speaking as a TPM subscriber -- uh Prime Member -- I'm not there any more, and following you there was the main way I remembered to read TPM.

While here may not be a great new source of subscribers, I'm skeptical you're getting much from the folks left there.

@quark my presence on twitter is not any permanent thing. We’re posting this series a lot there. Because this is a key thing for us to get out. But I was really tiring if the nonsense there and expect I’ll be moving mostly here or to post
@joshtpm Thanks for the response! And BTW I should've added that I continue to love your stuff and am very happy to support you and your team's work!
@quark we truly appreciate it. not 100% funded by subscriptions. but close. 85%-90%. so our members make the whole thing possible.
@joshtpm I kind of miss being over there. I miss having outrage on tap. But it's not good for me, or anyone else.
@ian @joshtpm It's clearly headed in a bad direction.
@joshtpm Yeah, I'm done over there after this latest stuff. Still a few people over there I'm waiting to come over, but other than that, I'm done.

@joshtpm Yup. it is the worst it has ever been.

It is abundantly clear he stopped banning any accounts for bigotry, harassment, or threats.

The place is just as bad as Gab. I hope every single advertiser runs away. Even the ones he gave 100% free ads to.

@joshtpm Did you expect something else? He told us he was going to turn it into a Nazi/Fascist site. He did exactly what he said he was going to do. Those that keep their accounts are saying they support exactly nothing less.

@MiriShuli @joshtpm I keeping my account but not Tweeting. Apart from once each Sunday to remind followers that I’m over here now. That reminder will go monthly from January, then quarterly.

I don’t want someone else taking the IanRobinson name after 14 years of use.

@ianRobinson @joshtpm This I completely understand. I also understand holding onto the name. But any time won’t there and all tweets only help drive his numbers, which means ad dollars and reach. It’s madness to help self proclaimed Nazis be Nazis. Sheer madness.

@joshtpm it’s pretty poor mate.

(Side note: glad to see you here. You’re a long way from the DuPont Starbucks.)

@joshtpm I hope we all can agree to leave that place, sometime soon. The longer we keep engaging there, the more we support Musk’s dangerous, hate-filled platform. At this point, the best thing we can do is let it devolve into another Truth Social. Advertisers would leave.
@joshtpm - Deleted the bird app from my phone, this is my last day looking over there, think I have found most of my tweeps here or on Post. If I wanted to hang out with and enrich Nazis, I'd be on TFG's app.
@CA_Rainbow @joshtpm I psychically feel a great deal better now that I have left. I don’t have a professional platform that is boosted by Twitter so it may have been easier for me.

@joshtpm

Josh: Are they violating Twitter's TOS as they existed before Musk? Will they be removed if reported?

Could you please screen cap them, share them & send copies to Apple's App store & the @EC_Commissioner_Breton ?
Because right now there is no one who organized to doing this.
Those two entities had some leverage over Musk's actions, but Apple gave him months to act, & the EU regs aren't in place yet. Meanwhile people are being harmed by his reckless decisions.

@joshtpm It really is. I just signed in for the first time in weeks just to see. I saw enough. It was 90% fascists I don't follow but trend enough I guess and 10% of the people/figures I care about.
@joshtpm I've been liking Mastodon, just want more people here... I feel sick visiting Musk's scum pond, and I'm not clicking with Post as much. Really hoping there will be major-scale moves over here.
@joshtpm I deactivated my account over there today. Not like I did much but lurk, but I don't need to subsidize that mess with my eyeballs and info. Glad you've got a foothold over here! (AF member, in case you're keeping an informal count).

@joshtpm If there is any bright line which would cause you to leave, what is it, and has it already been crossed? Mine was a while ago.

Local politicians started quitting shortly thereafter:
https://countyda.sccgov.org/news/news-release/da-jeff-rosen-leaves-twitter-protest-hatred-bigotry-and-antisemitism

You might want to keep Twitter accounts for source recruitment, tracking the hate spiral for news reasons, and impersonation prevention, but that's very different contributing free content for Musk's hate machine.

@joshtpm I think it's time for a real boycott/migration away. Too many people just keep tweeting away as if it'll get back to normal. It's not going back, not while he's in charge.
@joshtpm I left this morning, even though I haven't yet found elsewhere some of the people I valued over there. It feels right.

@joshtpm
At this point you are just engagement fodder.

The thing about the right's constant whine that they are being silenced is that there are multiple platforms with the kind of content they claim to love only no one really wants to be on those platforms because it amounts to just sitting around in their own filth. Anyone who thinks they can be a counter to that on Twitter is deluding themselves.

@joshtpm Until you guys quit the platform… you are enabling it.
@joshtpm I deleted my account because it made me feel dirty to read some of the content. It wasn't that it was never there before, but on my feed it was uncommon. Now the whole place is a rightwing sewer. I read a tweet concerning Anne Frank that made me literally recoil in horror, and that was it for me.
@joshtpm Count me as one more person hoping for another big push to move over here.
@joshtpm pls pls can you just move over here?
@joshtpm At first, I thought this was some cynical move at rebranding for Tesla. The brand image is so tied to the two coasts that he thought he needed some avenue to make the upcoming truck sell in the heartland against the Ford F150. Appealing more to the right might accomplish that. But no, this looks to be for real. And far worse.
@Stoneroads @joshtpm There is no rebranding in the world that will make the heartland see that monstrosity as a truck and buy them.

@joshtpm I have nearly abandoned as of today. What remains is a readonly account reduced to a handful of government & local utility information accounts that I struggle to find elsewhere.

In my rural community, most of the useful info comes via FB and/or twitter. I shut down my FB account years ago. Twitter too may be nixed completely real soon.

@joshtpm I've been read only on Twitter for a few weeks now, I'm not contributing any content with this trainwreck running the thing. No reasonable people should be contributing their content to that website anymore.
@joshtpm I can't stomach the right anymore. Hate is their oxygen, and I just can't continue to breathe the same air as them. I wish everyone I follow would leave so I can too.

@joshtpm 💯 I use Tweetbot so I don’t get the full firehose but I second everyone above who feels dirty going there, isn’t posting anymore, is waiting for the final few accounts to arrive here, and is keeping a presence just for a few local government accounts.

I don’t enjoy it at all anymore, and am disgusted and saddened to see it turn like this.

@joshtpm We've reached the point where the muskstain sticks to anyone who is still active over there. And to anyone who keeps trying to draw attention back there by RTing content into this world.

It was one thing to stay to see how it works out. At this point, it's active collaboration to stay, even if "resisting".

That muskstain doesn't wash off ...

@joshtpm I’m just about ready to leave. I’ve tried to push a few of my favorite follows on there to leave, or at least get on any of the alternatives and start to migrate, but I can’t go on there anymore. It’s a hellhole. My last act of rebellion is to block all accounts who I see advertising there- show them I don’t want to see them there.
@joshtpm Went over there. Found someone asking me a question about Paxlovid in response to a months old tweet - and other than that, a train wreck. Answered the question and uninstalled Twitter on my phone. Might still look at Peter Hotez's feed sometimes but can do that on my laptop.
@joshtpm To a large degree, I moved off when InfoSec Twitter moved to Mastodon. I figured, if I can't be sure on high-minded grounds where I should hang my hat, I'll go with selfish, and as an IT professional I want to stick with wherever the InfoSec accounts are.
@joshtpm it's only going to get worse.
@joshtpm Maybe you should be running your own TPM fediverse server

@joshtpm if the bird site is the new storm front would this make it easier for law enforcement to track than trying to find them in the shadows of the dark web?
@joshtpm I never imagined St. Elmo's fire could manifest as self immolation. (This is like if Shia LaBoeuf tried to do online performance-art, "what if Howard Hughes bought Twitter and hung out with Henry Ford's worst friends?" Masters of the universe gone wild.)
@joshtpm I finally deleted my account yesterday. It’s just ridiculous.
@joshtpm
glad to see you here, tho - for now.
also Popehat at mastodon.social !
