Reminder to anyone who supports the NYT staff's labor action: unless a miracle happens and we get a contract deal by midnight, we will be walking out for one day tomorrow, Dec. 8.

We'll be asking supportive readers to abstain from visiting/using NYT offerings for the day, midnight to midnight. That means articles. That means multimedia. That means... Wordle.

I know. That one pains me too. But maybe the word will be like LYMPH and we'll all be lucky to miss it.

@poniewozik One day of abstention will be hard but I know we can do it! Go union!
@poniewozik re: Wordle
@bk1e @poniewozik If it's midnight to midnight Eastern time, then presumably those of us on the West Coast can avoid breaking our streak by playing after 9pm on Thursday?
@vambenepe @poniewozik I think the crossword has a >24 hour window, but I'm not sure about Wordle. Goodbye Wordle streak.
@bk1e @poniewozik Wordle window is 24h, but being on the West Coast my 24h window maps to 3am->3am East Coast time, so it overlaps over 2 different days (East Coast time).
@vambenepe @bk1e @poniewozik in that case presumably wordle becomes available to you at your 9pm? In which case you will have to miss one. Or does it not work that way?
@Beedge @bk1e @poniewozik It doesn't work that way. Wordle becomes available for everyone at midnight of their local time (or more accurately whatever time zone their phone or computer is set to). So to me in California it becomes available every day at midnight (so at 3am Eastern time).
@Beedge @bk1e @poniewozik Which makes me realize I mess up in my previous post. I should have written "3am->3am East Coast time" instead of "9pm->9pm East Coast time". I'll go and correct now (thanks to Mastodon "edit" feature!)
@vambenepe @Beedge @bk1e @poniewozik this sounds like some really silly reasoning to me
@pewterbaw @vambenepe @bk1e @poniewozik maybe its not intuative, but I dont think its silly. Now that I think of it Wordle becomes available to me at midnight (GMT) , so there is a window of opportunity (which I missed) to obbserve the boycott and hold on to my streak ( if I had one, which I do, its currently 0 )
@Beedge @vambenepe @bk1e @poniewozik I mean that's a lot of mental gymnastics to do instead of just supporting the workers
@pewterbaw @Beedge @vambenepe @bk1e @poniewozik Which reminds us that we should all support migrants, and jobs that perform seamlessly in the background of our society all the while knowing that not one job is substantial more important or at all than another job. We all need these roles if you think about it, we just want our fair shake without being downtrodden on by the guy at the top who's thought it necessary to horde all the resources.
@bk1e @vambenepe @poniewozik you Can do crossword at 10pm EST tonight
@embuco @bk1e @poniewozik That's usually when I do it, most evening after midnight. πŸ˜€ #NightOwl
@embuco @bk1e @poniewozik As a side note, and because @bk1e's meme made me laugh out loud, here's a related pun I posted on Twitter a couple of years ago: https://twitter.com/vambenepe/status/1226561167935537153

@vambenepe @bk1e @poniewozik Or, maybe, just maybe, a streak in a word game is not as important as those people's jobs? Just saying. (No, I am not a hater of the game, nor have I ignored it. In gonna break my streak, of course.)

@poniewozik my son pointed out to me that if I change the date on my iPhone to a future date, Wordle already has a word for that date, so there might be a way around this
@micah @poniewozik do you put that much effort into supporting the workers?
@poniewozik People play the NYT version rather than the classic unmodified one? 🀦
@dalias @poniewozik
Unless I missed something they redirected the original site to nyt
@topnomi @poniewozik The game was a single HTML file. Just hitting "Save As..." gave you a copy you could play by opening it in your browser for decades with no internet connection.
@dalias @poniewozik
But the words are different. Your scores no longer line up with the general public.
@topnomi @poniewozik Yeah just with other people playing classic. 😎
@poniewozik We support you, we support Unions, we will.
How to Build a Wordle Clone in JavaScript

In this article, you will be recreating the guessing game Wordle [https://www.nytimes.com/games/wordle/index.html]. This article covers the core game logic but does not implement sharing your results. The article also doesn't cover the functionality that generates game statistics. @poniewozik I'm just glad we're not being asked to boycott the Monday crossword puzzle, which is the only one I can do.
@dankennedy_nu You just know the Thursday crossword is going to have some crazy rebus involved anyway
@poniewozik @dankennedy_nu I’m going to do the Thursday crossword when it comes out tonight at 10. (Hope that counts.) Then totally off from midnight to midnight.

@poniewozik Strikes seem prevalent around the world now. Good luck. It's about time labour took back some control
@poniewozik Eep. I'll keep to wordle.wekele.com and duotrigordle.
@poniewozik Thanks for the reminder! Solidarity!
@poniewozik NYT is my go-to paper every day. I will abstain from reading tomorrow to support the labor action if needed.
@poniewozik don't worry, I play the 3rd party versions of wordle and I don't even really trust nyt as a reliable source ATM.
@poniewozik As a freelancer, I normally have to check in on Thursdays with my editor, but I just emailed her now instead! :)
@poniewozik I like the NYT, but I usually don't read it because it has a paywall and has too much international/national news (my opinion). Also, the opinion column seems filled with right-wing garbage.
@poniewozik I’ve always loved your pieces, and only Unions can bring back the middle class.
@poniewozik If the word IS lymph, you’ve launched the action with a powerful first blow.
@poniewozik And if anyone REALLY misses it, they can do the archive the next day!
@poniewozik this is the first I’ve heard about this. I hope you can quickly reach an agreement.
@poniewozik if we have learned nothing else we have learned we win when we stand together. I am supporting you.
@poniewozik Got it. I also play Word Hurdle and Quordle...they will do.

@poniewozik

I #unsubscribed for #Reasons involving #framing of people and events. This was before #wordle (which I abstain from) and I was mostly there for the other little games.

I don't really miss them. I'm also not going to click on any #shortLink that might possibly be from the #NYT

@poniewozik no one tweaked the JavaScript to make the day’s word β€œUNION”??
@poniewozik sharing to fellow union workers on FB!
@poniewozik where can we find information about what workers are asking for from readers and subscribers?
@poniewozik The new Wordle czar loves their timely words so the only correct answer tomorrow is UNION
I'll skip the Wordle in solidarity with the U 🟩 N 🟩 I 🟩 O 🟩 N 🟩
