The war against LGBTQ+ rights in the United States continues, with the conservative majority on the Supreme Court appearing poised to side with a website designer who wants preemptive permission to discriminate against same-sex couples.

Christian Designer Seeks Preemptive Approval From SCOTUS To Discriminate Against LGBTQ+ Couples

No same-sex couple has tried to buy her product.

God
@godpod IANAL so I am totally confused as to how someone can bring *any* case that is hypothetical.
@SyntaxErrors @godpod Same. I thought they dismissed cases or wouldn't even bring them if there wasn't an actual injured party involved.
@godpod We live in ugly times indeed; to have all this hate bubbling up and being exploited by the very party that calls themselves Christians is beyond the pale.
@godpod This case smells like a Republican set up. If the GOP controlled puppet justices rule in favor, this will give tacit cover to those discriminating based upon color, religion, gender, etc.

@godpod if you think the Republicans give a shit about the religious rights of a website designer, you’re kidding yourself.

This is a case seeking making it legal for businesses to make LGBT second class citizens.

Are we really going to allow 40 years of this? How much more harm will they do before we take the court back?

@godpod I’m wondering if this would also be license for me to deny HVAC services to the religious as it would violate my strongly held beliefs that invisible sky people do not exist and that all religions are made up psychobabble…
@kinsey @godpod Under current doctrine, no, as that would be unlawful discrimination (on the basis of a protected class). But if conservatives win this or similar cases, maybe -- if you belonged to a DIFFERENT church whose doctrine said you can't help people who believe in unproven things. As with most such things, conservative strategies are short-sighted and self-defeating. That's how we got after-school Satan clubs.
@godpod @wesdym it was mostly rhetorical… I like taking there money and would never cut off around half of my potential customers as that is also “self defeating”.
@godpod @ljohn44 I guess the question is: what gay couple would possibly want her to design anything for them? Or what person with any sense of taste?
@dudadius @godpod @ljohn44 That's my take on this, too. I've long supported very small carve-outs for cases like this, and in fact I'm preparing a white paper on that this very week, as a legislative proposal. Let people be bigots if it doesn't harm anyone else; you can't legislate private beliefs, only conduct. There's nothing to be gained by punishing people for private, non-harmful bigotries; it just engenders avoidable bitterness -- and cases like this one, which might be damaging.
@godpod No word better exemplifies Christian persecution than hypothetical.
@godpod Can’t wait for her to go out of business.
@godpod Not specific to the US, but for the whole western world, after they finish going after LGBTQ+ people, they will go after other groups. Eventually they will come after atheists like me. But I don't think you are the one I should be looking for sympathy from... God.
@ruicraveiro @godpod Yes, I totally agree. This will not stop here. Many think discriminating is OK until the discrimination is targeted towards their group.
Evangelicals want to be legally labeled as bigots. Got it.
@godpod Bigotry is always gross and Jesus would be ashamed of her.
@godpod Yay, new SC case to give me existential anxiety about will I be able to just live my life.
@godpod They're trying to control internet access now. I mean, they always were, but they'll do different cases until they hone it down to what they want.
@godpod the phrase FUCKING CUNT !, comes to mind.

@godpod

The bible is very much against getting divorced (only allowed for cases of infidelity and then you're never allowed to remarry or have sex again).

And yet they never have any issue serving adulterers, divorced/remarried folks, people who had sex outside of marriage.... Almost like they're just using religion to justify their bigotry

@godpod
The Court seems to want to divide our United side by turning our rights into personal judgments. We must demand ethics from them and also adherence to the Constitution as currently understood.
@godpod When SCOTUS abuses original jurisdiction in cases like this, Congress needs to remove their original jurisdiction. Has anyone in Congress even read the constitution?
@godpod The amazing thing is no one hired her and she can't claim any "legal injury", this type of case is never heard by the SC.
Alliance Defending Freedom are her attorneys and they have been trying to get the US laws to allow christians (and ONLY christians) to be above the law (yes special treatment).
AND they routinely target the #LGBT community.
How sad that these people spend their entire lives spreading hate, what a wasted opportunity.
@godpod Sure am glad the religious people I love are nothing like this witchhunteresque imposter
@godpod I’ll wager all the money in my pockets* against all the money in theirs, that they’ll happily produce a wedding website for a pair of straight devorcies though. #everydayhypocrisy
*there is no money in my pockets
@godpod What the fuck is wrong with these people?!?
@godpod
I'd love to see that smirk knocked off her smug, lilly white, hating anyone who isn't like herself, face...
@godpod Will this mean I can refuse services to a Christian because they're racist, homophobic, or for any other reason that is against my atheist beliefs??
@godpod if this goes this wish her only business failures
@godpod and SCROTUS is at it again. Can we just send them to the moon? GOD!
Whoops I just took your name in vain.
@godpod by the look her website company site, she’s a pretty shitty designer to boot. This would be incredibly bad precedent—where would it end?
@godpod That they're even considering this case is just disgusting.
