It's not enough to squat a Mastodon handle that you never use.

It's not enough to automatically repost your Twitter timeline.

You have a chance to be part of something new. Something important. To shape it in the right way.

With all of us.

@evan coincidentally I posted about it this morning: https://simmulation.com/@david/statuses/01GK6Y8BJZRP76STD9CE3X8PRV
Post by david (@[email protected])

Hmm, yes. Anyone crossposting from Twitter to Mastodon, but completely ignoring engagement on the second is getting unfollowed. I have enough echo chambers, and rather monologue with myself.

simmulation.com
@david @evan yes! They missed the point entirely
@evan agree, the auto re-posting from twitter is no way to shape a conversation - if I wanted to see it on twitter, I'd be there.

@athenamedia @evan:

fully agree; reposting from twitter on mastodon is a nuisance...

@evan @avedik @athenamedia to me the fediverse is open and people are free to post to it however but I won’t tend to follow, boost, or engage with anyone not really here

@xian: fair point - but I try to avoid giving #SpaceKaren any more click revenue... ;-)

@evan @athenamedia

@avedik @evan @athenamedia me too -- just saying that the whole idea of federation is there will never be "one correct way" to use these tools and we have more opportunity (and in a sense responsibility) to curate our own experiences here.
@avedik @xian @evan @athenamedia Hiya... That's my name sir! Let's give the trashing of it a break here on Mastodon. I know I and the other Karens in the world would truly appreciate it. Even if we are a bossy bunch haha!
@avedik @xian @athenamedia @evan there are a lot of interesting women named Karen that would like to see an end to this. It also reinforces the mistaken notion that bad behavior is feminine. And you’re basically insulting Musk by calling him a girl, as if that in itself is an insult.

@baba_lilith: yeah well, here are some more nicknames for Mr. #Musk right from the facade of the #Birdsite HQ: "bankruptcy baby, supreme parasite, petulant pimple, apartheid profiteer, dictator’s asskisser, lawless oligarch, insecure colonizer, cruel hoarder, worthless billionaire"....

And yes, I'm aware that Biologist and NASA enthusiast Dr. Karen James was Space Karen first...

@xian @athenamedia @evan

Why is Elon Musk Being Called Space Karen? The Space Karen Meme, Explained | The Mary Sue

So Elon Musk is Space Karen now? Yes, you read that right. If you were on Twitter Thursday night, hoo boy—after the news that hundreds of remaining Twitter employees had quit and headquarters was shut down, the whole place had the feel of a rave taking place on a spaceship careening toward the sun. Everyone

The Mary Sue
@avedik @athenamedia @evan would reposting on non-Mastodon ActivityPub servers be any less annoying?
@athenamedia @evan its so ugly and offputting. i don't like to complain about things i dont like seeing much because i believe in curating your experience and not externalizing it to others, but holy fuck do i hate crossposters and i hope they go away forever soon
@athenamedia @evan As a person who just shared my first thread from Twitter— it was an excellent thread and not available here. I continue to visit the bird site because many worthy and knowledgeable people have not migrated elsewhere. I have opened accounts at multiple alternative sites and so far Mastodon is my fave, but everyone isn’t here. Hate me if you must. 🤷‍♀️
@TerriGlass @evan nobody 'hates' anyone! It's just we're saying we're not keen on conversations simply re-directed from twitter, reports, etc - talk here, talk there, that's fine, but broadcasting same thing to all the platforms isn't a social conversation. Best of luck.

THIS great sentiment

maybe we ALL take a serious & sober look at how ABSENCE of LAW over past 18 years (not bad law, shitty or law unfair law... no law) has impacted:
• #internet
• #mobile #social
#privacy
#surveillance
#AI #ML
• #data #governance

This is a massive #mastodon #fediverse opportunity we can collectively act on before #SiliconValley #BigTech #VC carpet baggers arrive.

@evan It's been a breath of fresh air here! Not missing the bird. Left it 100% two weeks ago.

@Ibleedblue

I know what you mean but I also miss the abusive arguments so I am still on twitter ...

@Ibleedblue @evan

I admit to still taking a glance at Twitter every now and then, but it's less and less. It used to be a good source of information, but now it's just devolved into people yelling and trying to out-troll each other.... I just joined Mastodon a few days ago. I like the concept. Hoping more people make the move.

@JennFromPA @Ibleedblue @evan My Twitter feed is still useful to me at times. More and more, though, I am seeing mostly "Such and such account has been banned" for something or other the new overlord didn't like.
@JennFromPA @Ibleedblue @evan I have found the contrast between Mastodon and Twitter more and more clear as I toggle back and fottih with the bird site. Mostly now, it's just housekeeping over there. Changed my profile page and pinned a tweet re my #TwitterMigration. Felt soooo good!❤️🙏💕

@JennFromPA

Anyone called Anti MAGA Glitterbomb is a friend of mine!

@KarenStrickholm @JennFromPA @Ibleedblue @evan I still have a few people that I want to keep in touch with that are only on the birdsite so I'm checking in there off and on despite my preference to be completely done there. I'm still finding my way here, but is by far my favorite of the newer sites. I'd really love to reach critical mass of people here that I could be done with the meta spaces too.
@evan
I would love a feature in Mastodon where I can hide posts that are simply Twitter reposts, especially those where in order to really read the post you have to click on a Twitter link and give Apartheid Elmo more traffic...
@dirkhh @evan you can filter them out.
@kitrona
Ok, gotta ask... How exactly can I do that today... I can filter people, but how do I filter out bird site "retoots"?
@evan
@dirkhh @evan I think it's in settings on the website, you can filter out "rt" to not see retweets.

@dirkhh @kitrona @evan

Preferences->Filters->Add New Filters.

Not sure what keyword to use, but I suspect you can work it out.

Either that, &/or stop following anyone who crosstoots from fowl site + anyone who boosts fowl site crossposts.

@BenAveling @dirkhh @evan thank you, that's a much better explanation than I was able to muster at the time!

@kitrona

You had all the necessary information. I just walked through the steps. A bit. I've fallen short because I don't know what keyword/s to use, because I'm not seeing a lot of cross-tweets, for whatever reason.

@evan The #1 piece of advice I give everybody getting started on Mastodon is to engage in conversation. You get out of the platform what you put into it.
@evan
I don’t get leaving bird land just to opine about it here.
@evan what I love the most about being here is that it’s free — subscription free, ad free. There is nothing else like what we have here right now.
@Chimaera @evan It’s not free. Find out how to donate to the instance you’re linked to. Some instances allow a recurring donation. I also encourage folks to join smaller instances to spread the love & create a community as diverse as people are in real life.

@TransitBiker @evan yes, I’ve set up a monthly donation. Nothing in life is free. But money and profit are not central drivers here.

Post.news on the other hand has set up a system that’s front and center framed around spending points and leaving tips

@evan Hmm. Be here now. Where have I heard that before? Oh well, it’ll come to me sooner or later.
@evan Agree about the squatting. I’ve re-followed everyone since I moved over here but over the weekend I’m planning un-following those with zero posts.
@david_orr @evan Please give them a little time. It takes time to gain the courage to engage. Nothing in this world is safe or without risk. And every place carries danger, particularly for those from universally marginalized subgroups of humankind. The mainstream is perpetually and often unwittingly unkind to us and even if you don't notice, it leaves us with damage that becomes irreparable. Every word I type strikes terror in my heart as to how The Man will respond & how much it'll hurt.
@Verdantsquare @evan You make some excellent points and I have no intention of causing stress or harm.

@david_orr @evan Most people have no intent to cause stress or harm, but it still occurs widely. Those damaged over time can bear it less and less. Feeling alone, broken, and unwelcome, they suffer in silence or have their cries ignored... until they die. Reality. It's an awful world. So many existences end up being nothing but the default's collateral damage. And for what?

I appreciate your response, your thoughtfulness, and your good intentions.

@Verdantsquare @david_orr @evan Introverts may rarely post, and then only when deeply affected. Insisting that people post is really pushy. Extroverts tend to think that non-extroverts are broken. We’re not.
@BGAtlanta @david_orr @evan Many introverts are not, that's true, and that's happymaking news for me. But some of us are broken, and that factors into lurking as well.
@evan Agreed. it's still early days, so I'm letting people transition as they need to, but eventually I'll mute or block that kind of thing.
@evan As is often the case – "The medium is the message." Reposts always feel odd because they are odd. Referencing accounts that exist elsewhere. Ignoring best practices for a platform. "1 of 8 that could just be a single post with the increase in available characters but here we go.."
@evan But will they see this?!
@jasonbrooks @evan No. that’s where communication skills come in. “Social” media.
@evan as a twit refugee, I'm watching and still learning.
The twitter cross posts without any CW I already find annoying. I want to see them myself, but I can see why many users don't, especially political posts.
I often want to boost them but don't because they lack a CW.
As for my own posts, I'm still getting a feel for it.
@evan I just said a couple of things to someone. Agree. Be here.
@evan I've been saying we should enjoy Mastodon / Fediverse for what it is, rather than for what it isn't.
@BrianTransplant @evan Have yet to figure out if it IS enjoyable. Have never enjoyed social media.
