Them: Faving posts on Mastodon is useless, only the OP sees it.

Me, when a post gets faved: awwww, little internet hug ✨

@Lilliana_S fr tho I love favorites I wish they had more weight like an even amount with posts but I'm still gonna favorite things
@Lilliana_S I do wish the person who boosted the post into my timeline would see it - I’d like them to know I’m grateful for them sharing it with me.

@Teskariel @Lilliana_S

Me too; it's one of the few functions I miss from Twitter

@Lilliana_S

You can see how many there are if you klick on the post. 🥰

@SabineV5 @Lilliana_S yes, but it only shows you how many people on your instance have starred a toot. (At this moment, on det.social, the opening toot has 23 stars). Boost however are counted global!
@Danos @SabineV5 @Lilliana_S
Hmm, that seems to be mostly true, but I have some posts in my timeline where I can also see favs from other instances. For example for one of then, OP is from same instance as I am, I see 4 Favs and when I click on them, I see 3 accounts from "my" instance and one from photog. social.
@SabineV5 @Lilliana_S Thank you, I was about to say that. 😀
@Lilliana_S I get a modicum of dopamine every time
@Lilliana_S the irony of this having 900+ reblogs but only 90+ favorites
@Fawn @Lilliana_S on most instance software, favs don’t federate to instances other than the one the post is from. Currently the post is at 2.2k boosts and 7.4k favs
@trisschen @Lilliana_S @Fawn well this is something I did not know, I guess I should go read the manual or something. LOL
@Lilliana_S I couldn’t NOT favorite this 😁
@Lilliana_S I still try to boost a lot of stuff though! It can also be a good way for others to find your profile and you get like minded moots
@em_ad @Lilliana_S
I'd love to boost more but I don't want to flood timelines of people following me. 😩

@Veticia @Lilliana_S it seems like that's how posts get visibility here.. without an algorithm, I think it's just expected that you'd like a lot of stuff.

That's just my experience though!

@Lilliana_S And I am totally down for that, handing out way more stars than I previously did with this heart-thingy
@Lilliana_S I absolutely LOVE that favoriting things isn't broadcast to the whole of mastodon. This means i can like eleventy-billion cat pics or curl up with a cup of hot chocolate and favorite every single moss or tree or squirrel in the place and not drive anyone crazy! It's especially great when your day is rough and you need a little pick-me-up. That little ability to express appreciation is the difference between scrolling through google images and here :) I just love it! 😊

@dearydarling @Lilliana_S I so agree! Liberally starring every post I agree with with no fear of spamming someone's timeline.

I'm loving this concept. Loving people being real with no fear of reprisal. <3 Still need a heart emoji once in awhile.

@cravingwaffles @Lilliana_S

It's a lovely thing to express appreciation without it being used by an algorithm to misappropriate that joy, curiosity or interest into something commercial. I'm appalled at how unaware I was that this was happening, specifically to ME, even as i "Oh yes yes these social media companies, the way they exploit" but that was always "others". I didn't see how i would curb my enthusiasm, tailor a reply, not repost something i loved bc that's not what the machine wanted

@dearydarling @Lilliana_S so much this! Favouriting everything without a care. Not being afraid to look in the comments for fear of the original post being ruined by all out fighting (over literally anything!) It’s an absolute breath of fresh air 🥰
@dearydarling @Lilliana_S yeah, I like that boosting and faving have a different function. One to tell the author "I like this" and one to share with your followers, which can double as telling them you like it. This was true on the birdsite if you set your timeline to chronological & added a few muted phrases.

@dearydarling ⬆️ THIS 100%

If this was the "Other Place" I would be Quote RTing you with one of those Gifs where someone is pointing downwards with the word "THIS" emblazoned on it.

@Lilliana_S Exactly.

They: You must use this site like I say you should.

Me: I'll use it in good spirit, be nice and friendly, helpful etc....

...but I'll use it how I damn well please, thank you very much :-)

@Lilliana_S saaaaame!
@serenebabe @Lilliana_S It's one of my favorite features. When I favorite something, I neither pollute anyone else's timeline with it nor risk sparking any discussion about posts I favorite.
@Lilliana_S It still makes the Likes number go up, people can definitely see that, and otherwise..... who.... who else would you want to see it??? isn't the OP the one you like a post for??? 😳???
@Lilliana_S and that's why I like to do it!
@Lilliana_S
I can see that your post got 22 favorites and 57 boosts as of this posting.
@Lilliana_S I like how that sounds it's cute, *gives little internet hug* 🤗

@Lilliana_S
Aw, I love this.

Honestly it confuses me when people call it useless (I see that pretty often). How is telling someone you like their post useless? Isn't that the point of, you know, a "like" button?

@Len @Lilliana_S Same. I assume it’s by comparison to twitter’s like button, which also sent the tweet into your followers’ timelines (sometimes), but I thought we all agreed we hated that??
@cemhend @Lilliana_S Yeah, I think that's it. It just doesn't sit well with me when someone describes "telling OP you like their stuff" as useless.
It sounds like they only care about functions that affect the algorithm, not a little tool to make someone else happy or smile.
(Yep, I hated that too.)
@Lilliana_S who else needs to see it tho? I can’t imagine caring that someone else can see the number of stars I got it who gave them to me 😳

@emopod I know that sometimes it can be necessary to see who liked a post to be able to protect yourself (e.g. via blocking) but that function is still available by clicking on the stats of the post itself.

And other than that, I also think that it's not necessary to broadcast what you like by other means than boosting.

@Lilliana_S Do you mean seeing who liked a post that you find offensive so that you can block them?
@emopod exactly. Or at least keep an eye out for them.

@Lilliana_S Oh, but I just checked and I CAN see who liked your original post when I click on the number next to the star

What is the issue some people have here? That what others like isn't pushed onto the timeline? Because that was always an incredibly weird thing to do imo

@emopod don't ask me, I'm just as much at a loss and don't understand why people think so 😅

@emopod @Lilliana_S I've noticed that more personal posts tend to get more favorites than boosts. I think a lot of my followers are also twitter migrators

I do wish more people would boost my selfies/introduction though, I'm trying to need people here 😅

@Lilliana_S I don't understand why people say it's useless :')

It's a good "non-verbal" communication tool

@Lilliana_S

Exactly!

I have thought about this as well. Seen a few posts here dimissing favouriting stuff.

I think it's a good thing.

I think it would not be good to go down the route of Facebook though, with multiple reactions available.

@Lilliana_S People are so used to performing in front of an audience that they don't see the value in just communicating to a single person.
@Lilliana_S Right?! I love those little cyber high fives!
@Lilliana_S its funny thata been one of my only reasons for fav/liking posts. I want ppl to know that i see them and apperciate the@
@Lilliana_S actually favoriting a post means more people see the original post on the local server, and across the network: 👍🏼

@Lilliana_S @theandil no
Even the picture you shared doesn’t mention anything about favoriting, only boosting

Favoriting maybe will put the post higher on the part of the explore/search area of the app, but that’s it

@falcon @Lilliana_S @theandil sorry to be dense here, boost and reblog mean the same thing?

@hanspetermeyer @janedunlop @Lilliana_S @theandil
boost = retweet
So you are sharing that to your followers

Favorite here just adds a star to it and let the person know their post was starred. It does NOT does like twitter where it could should to your followers that you liked it. And it's also not going to affect your timeline, showing a "Because you liked XYZ...:

@janedunlop BTW, don’t be sorry for not knowing something. If there’s any confusion I can try my best to help clear it up

@Lilliana_S
So no one can see what I like outside of op? Oh, I'm gonna love this.

I was always so anxious about liking things on Twitter because I used it mostly as a bookmark for threads I didn't want to read at that moment. Wait... Can I still see what I like? I need to better navigate this app.

@gwimo No, the opinion I quoted isn't even true XD
People can see who liked a toot when they go into the stats of said post.
And apparently if you like a toot you also add it to the federated timeline of your server.
However, only OP gets directly notified about your like which is what makes it feel more intimate.

@gwimo nah, honestly I think you're good. While this info is available, people need to actively check it to access it and I think most people don't 🤣

For Mastodon, if you want to have access to a post in the future, I recommend using the bookmark function though.
