here, have a coordinate system chart~

#gamedev #unity #unreal #3d #math

@acegikmo It's so weird that there's no standard here. It doesn't mean much, but I remember Second Life also had the Z up axis
@gentlemanoctopus @acegikmo What are you talking about no standard? There's at least four standards here! 😂
@gentlemanoctopus @acegikmo I still spin up SL when I've got a shape in my head and want to roughly sketch it out.
@acegikmo I knew Source was my homie. Wtf is wrong with unreal….
@acegikmo If I ever make a 3d game engine it's going to be X up!
@niki @acegikmo
What about W up ? Could be original x)
@acegikmo Thanks for the clean overview. Working almost daily with Unreal I usually think about coordinate spaces as left handed Z-up, but given that I rarely need to step out of the engine, I've kind of forgotten it's not an industry standard by any means
@acegikmo @binarytango and here was me thinking we had it rough with geographic coordinate systems and competing “standards” for #latlon vs #lonlat. #gischat
@acegikmo I'm going to make an X is up to aggravate people
@FranticPonE the tiktok coordinate system

@acegikmo I KNEW IT, I KNEW UNREAL WAS NONSENSE

(honestly tho I don’t get why is it so hard to agree on something intuitive)

@acegikmo I always see some "standardization" discussions surrounding post of handness charts... but I think it's a non-issue, a red hearing. At the end of the day, blender exports fbx right hand Y up and Unreal imports fbx or gltf but flips the depth axis values and once these formats are properly handled by the software ... You just have to put yourself into the current handness. This chart is quite handy though, just to map your workspaces at the very least 👍
@acegikmo
Does that mean the z-up engines are flipping the bird at us? 😅
@acegikmo I didn't have to wait long for Godot.
@acegikmo Love it! All this time I had that in my hand, just amazing. Just every time I orient the Z axis skyward it looks slightly rude 🤪
@acegikmo I will never not laugh at seeing Unreal all alone in the bottom left. I mean, it's not like it's a *wrong* choice or anything, it's just hilarious that nobody else made it.
@acegikmo omg they're all so annoyyyying!! Thank you Freya this is fantastic
@acegikmo One of my favourite tweets is now one of my favourite toots? I share this online, I share it at work. Thank you. 😁

@acegikmo This chart is nice to see what group is where, but left or right-handed doesn't speak to much people as when you open software, you don't know which axis is left/right and front/back, nowadays software use seamlessly all directions.

Could be nice to know where is north/south/east/west, for example.
(East/West being left/right and north/south front/back, and Z the up/down)

Nice to see godot/mc, could be cool to have photogrammetry app (RealityCapture, Agisoft, 3Dzephir, Meshroom)

@acegikmo I can help you if needed, sharing such chart and try to reference it on google could help a lot of people.

Also have the unit scale (for example by default unreal 1u=1cm)

@acegikmo And Cry engine is in the 3DS Max box. Probably all derivatives too.
@acegikmo always curious why unreal is odd engine out?
@acegikmo oh no - you miss three.js 🙀
@acegikmo @litherum And then, just for fun, we have the web (CSS / SVG / canvas2D), which use a Y-down left-handed system.
@acegikmo To me, the more interesting question is: Where do file formats stand in this table?
