I’ve had a lot of people ask me recently why not stay on Twitter and fight.

The reason is because Musk controls the algorithm. He could ban you tomorrow, and he could also just deprioritize every one of your tweets so no one sees them.

You can’t fight and win when the opponent has complete control over the field of conflict.
#TwitterMigration

@protecttruth I see #twitter this way now: I went to a college dominated by frat culture. Not my thing. Drunken bros puking and shouting, beer and puke. There was nothing my presence there could change or improve. That culture was powerful, entrenched, and innate to the situation. Walk right out and find good friends instead, make my own good situation. Twitter is more of a tipping point than established as hellish, but it’s clear which way the wind is blowing and where the power is there.
@protecttruth - perfect rationale, in my honest opinion. A LOT of current Twitter users are of some sort of mindset Elon is going to be removed from the equation. People like you and me already see the reality of what the future holds for the site. Much like playing poker, you need to know when to fold just as much as when to play your hand. Those who don't consider other alternatives are going to SOL in the end!
@joesbrat67 @protecttruth I joined a month ago, because I saw this “writing on the wall” and wanted to be sure I already had a new place to land.
@protecttruth this is another reason why people are leaving Twitter. Acceptance for instigation to violence is ok on twittee!!!
@protecttruth @MeidasRomi actually that Twitter account did eventually get suspended. But it shouldn’t require multiple reports to get that moderation call right.
@mscitizen @protecttruth the posting i talked about it was from Nov 21, not nov 20. I checked and reported this morning, i will post the result here!
@mscitizen @protecttruth not only i reposted it for all my followers to report it, but i wrote to elon expressing my thoughts that all his advertisers should pay attention! Putting a target on somebody knees MUST not be acceptable and seeing your post, i see that person as a repeat offender!
@mscitizen @protecttruth @MeidasRomi
But it's it back after the Thanksgiving Musk amnesty?
@protecttruth I broke all ties yesterday. I logged on, looked at my feed which was more ignorant & fascist as ever. Elon would kick me off anyway, so why give him the satisfaction.
@protecttruth I can't figure out what they think they will win. What is the prize?
@protecttruth The stay and fight argument assumes that Twitter is a public forum. It never was that, which Musk has laid bare. It’s a business, like Facebook, and its users are on the menu and its customers are the advertisers. At this point, it is free to become Truth Social 2 and to fail like that other platform. Those who stay give Musk an argument that Twitter is a fair and balanced forum, which it will not be.
@stevewashington @protecttruth I think people are reluctant to see the truth which is that musk has killed twitter. I was one of those people, because for all its faults I really loved Twitter. It helped me stay up on things happening around the world without having to only get them filtered thru the American media. But musk is not a silent investor who hangs back. He clearly has an agenda, he’s wasted no time acting on it. He’s destroying the site in a matter of weeks, there’s no coming back.
@protecttruth “Staying to fight” is wild because people who are doing that are providing unpaid labor to their perceived enemy. It’s less like a battlefield (as some have likened it) and more like a fighting arena owned and operated by your enemy who charges admission and doesn’t give you a cut. No thanks.
@WeShall great analogy
@MalagasyLisa Thank you. I just hate the idea of giving that man a nanogram of my time or effort, ya know?
@WeShall yup. Totally feel you. Between him and the twice-impeached former guy, it would be so nice to have just ONE day when nobody mentions either one.
@MalagasyLisa Permanent Main Character Syndrome.
@WeShall @protecttruth You have a point. It is a fighting arena, which some pay for just to knowingly brutalize each other for the entertainment of that POS. Social media version of the Hunger Games anyone?

@protecttruth

In addition, hearing that Twitter is planning to have encrypted DM's and voice/video calls in the near future?
How could I trust said platform with that, especially now!

@protecttruth Twitter was so much better before Elon Musk bought it! He's only had it a few weeks and it has gone downhill so fast! He's just a thick American with money but no business sense whatsoever!!!
@protecttruth I really never understood a lot about the concept of "fighting." You can do a certain amount of info distribution. You can do broad communication to those who already share your views. You can maybe whip up some volunteer help for certain efforts or legislation. But how many have EVER changed basic position because of a social media argument? They might be out there, but they're darned rare.

@JulieNye @protecttruth Although I've waged "battle" over there since 2016, I've independently come to the same conclusions as you.

So, I muted or blocked all the politicians I used to battle against and am now fully embracing the friendly environment here. No more bird site battle for me.

@KansasGrant @protecttruth Agree. At some point I believe it becomes question of how to maximize your time if you really want to accomplish anything (besides selling outrage). One-on-one IRL interactions really do get more traction. That said, I think it's time for more of the official agencies (public safety, service, etc) to establish their own instances that can function outside the bird-o-sphere. 🤨

@protecttruth Your rationale is more mature than mine: I mainly just want to help him lose $44B by no longer providing free content to the bird site. ;-)

But even before he took over, I was fed up with my occasional stints in TwitMo for no good reason, plus the shadow-banning of a successful account that I had nurtured for years.

Clearly, the Twitter machine doesn't want my free content that drives their traffic. So, "buh-bye."

@protecttruth people on Twitter aren't fighting, they just tweeting. They're playing whack a mole with far right trolls and preaching to the choir while making Twitter more valuable for Musk.
@protecttruth Yes, this is the conundrum...I'm still using it solely to gather the most interesting and interactive people I like so that I can maybe persuade them to join us over here. Then get organised for anything that's important and needs organising;

@protecttruth this is free market, Republican system. You don't like a product or an ideology? move on and look for your niche.

Stay and fight for twitter? It's like demand a chesse burger in a Dominos Pizza place.

Twitter is heading to support supremasism, hate speech and a white political view.

Let them be and fight to protect the only rule that matter: never use the government law enforcement agencies to make other to believe what you believe like a segregation law or anti-non-whites law.

@protecttruth True. Many people want to just hang on until Blue Sky is up and working.

@protecttruth I tried to explain this to someone earlier today, but they were having none of it. Then when I tried to explain why being here was so much better the response was “oh it’s just too hard”

I literally created an instance for my friends from Twitter to join, to make it easy and the answer is “it’s too hard”.

@protecttruth The other place was increasingly feeling like screaming in a small padded cell. I could see my engagement numbers drop; there’s no “truth to power” on a platform when your voice is artificially muted.

So then you’re just choosing to maybe entertain what’s left of your silo, while providing usage numbers for him to woo advertisers back for a hate platform.

@protecttruth I agree with Oliver's, and also add that he does not have any interest in keeping things secure and safe. That's too much of a risk.
@protecttruth I'm not staying to "fight", I'm mostly staying out of curiosity,
@protecttruth
Nah. I'm staying there to watch the inevitable crash and burn. The flames out to be spectacular.

@protecttruth Fighting for Twitter is a fight for what, exactly?

Engaging authoritarians and extremists on Twitter amplifies them. Walking amongst them without engaging normalizes them.

If you want to save Twitter, you can't. But you *can* save people -- by leaving Twitter.

The best thing now is for Twitter to become like Gab or 8chan. The kooks already have places to talk to themselves -- let Twitter become another one. Any other path strengthens their nonsense and exhausts everyone else.

@protecttruth Also... I know I don't have any huge political stake in Twitter but nobody has an obligation to "fight" for something like a commercial social network. You wouldn't fight for McDonalds, so why for Twitter? In fact, the best thing, from a capitalist and personal well being standpoint is to "vote with your wallet (you're the wallet) and leave for greener pastures.

@WhyNotZoidberg @protecttruth If I leave Twitter, nothing happens (because I’ve posted like twice in the last 8 years and generally avoid it, but haven’t wanted to figure out to get rid of the account ).

But if people with followers leave, a number of their followers will follow (sorry for that word play) and then they won’t be afflicted by “the algorithm” and all the crap Twatted over there.

So if someone wants to fight, leaving is the only winning play.

@WhyNotZoidberg @protecttruth

Sadly, some people *would* fight for other brands, and they have. Also, they've gotten used to being brands themselves. It's sad and frustrating, and I made my last attempt at helping one of them out about 3 weeks ago and now I'm done for good.

"You can lead a horse to water but you cannot make him drink,
Lead a horse's ass to wisdom but you cannot make him think!" -- Terry Callier (R.I.P.)

@protecttruth

Why fight for a system that you don't own or control, when you can build your own? :D

@protecttruth and because being there, using that platform is SUPPORTING his ugly hateful controly wyt man crazy. I'm not gonna support that.
@protecttruth Plus, it's just a dumb question.
@protecttruth Musk already told people he was taking away their reach. So, if you disagree with Elon's point of view. He is going to limit the number of people who see your tweets.

@My_Screen_Name @protecttruth

He said he wants to charge people for reach, which is a hilarious Elon Musk level of stupid, confusing the audience for the advertisers.

@protecttruth it seems to me that the best way is to leave, if all Twa**er becomes is a right wing echo chamber for nutjobs then job done. No more advertising, no targeting of minorities…just a pointless noise in the empty void.

@protecttruth Would you build your house on a swamp? Owned by someone else?

Even the best foundation can't make up for the mud it is built on

@protecttruth It’s also not our job to save Twitter from it’s owner. If he wants to trash it he can do it without me. If he sells it I might take a look to see what the new oeners are doing to it. Until then I’ll stay over here and keep my sanity.

@protecttruth well welcome aboard and hope Mastodon is good for you

I've recently joined myself and think I'm going to spend my time here instead of jumping around different places or go back to Twitter

@protecttruth ^^^^^ this right here. 100% correct.
@protecttruth ...and ultimately you would be fighting to help Musk profit. I don't see how that benefits anyone. 🤔

@protecttruth
Twitter was the community pool where you could cool off & meet some folks even if disagreeable people also had access.

As Twitter trends toward septic tank some argue we have to maintain "our" turf. But it ain't!

Tho I'll agree we need to make an orderly exit, it's not our play spot. So, as it goes truly shitty we will & should give it a wide berth - as will the rest of the sane world.

The passing of relevence of Elon Musk & his MAGA space will be our revenge.

@protecttruth while I value the people I've met on Twitter and had made some beautiful connections in multiple communities that impact my life, specifically #epilepsy (16 yo son), #depression (18 yo son) and my feel good #quilting and #cats , it's not worth my mental health to stay in a toxic environment. So I am here rebuilding.

It was a really interesting, that while I had a pang of regret leaving those I've built relationships with, it was brief. That tells me how toxic everything is there.

@protecttruth @satirehat
None of what Eric Blair concerns me.

I mostly reply and RT items of interest--if no one other than the people I reply to sees, that's fine with me.

Also only use Twitter to view specific Twitter timelines like @satirehat @clearing_fog @teresaccarter2 (not sure if she's on Mastodon) and other faves.

So I think algos make no difference to me.

Also very rarely get troll replies; exceptions--recent troll replies on topics like mastodon, crypto, FTX.

@arapaho415 @protecttruth @satirehat

Yeah, I don’t have any illusions about what twitter is becoming, but I’m still splitting my time between here and there, and as long as it’s still functional I’ll prob continue to do so. From a research perspective, there is a lot of stuff over there that just doesn’t exist here.

@clearing_fog @arapaho415 @protecttruth sorry to curse your TL with a direct link but the convo is worth reading. Search is degrading.

@satirehat @arapaho415 @protecttruth

I’ve noticed the same thing. This really bothers me. All our content will be lost because no one will be able to find it.

@clearing_fog @satirehat @arapaho415 @protecttruth

I have to say I'm most bothered by investigative threads lots of us have built up over the years. we've done pretty groundbreaking stuff, as a team, which I fear will crash and burn with Elmo

@satirehat @arapaho415 @protecttruth @willpollock

It’s painful to think about.

@clearing_fog @satirehat @arapaho415 @protecttruth painful is the right word my friend. we'll look back on Elmo's reign of terror in the same way we see TFG's 4-year obliteration of norms (operations are strikingly similar)

Update: it appears I couldn't search my full files because I had locked my account, fwiw.
