Elon's take over of Twitter has set a lot of things into motion in the digital world

Tumblr and now also Flickr are thinking about intergrating ActivityPub so it will be able to connect to the Fediverse!

A lot of lay offs in the mainstream social media but the Fediverse is only growing!

The world is waking up  Social media can be fun but also privacy friendly at the same time, you got the proof now!❤️

No billionaires needed ✅

@stux wishing there was "quote boost" No need for billionaires!
@stux @GilliJamtin Off-topic but curious to hear your view: what do you think of boosting your reply to this thread instead? That way the discussion will happen under the original post instead of a million different places. I’m pondering how to signify boosted replies. I saw someone the other prepend them with ☝🏻so folks know to click the reply to see the whole convo. Any thoughts?
@simeon @stux @GilliJamtin I boost my reply or that of others in a conversation to make a point. The reply gets into more feeds this way, while still staying as part of the main convo. Really, IMO other than one's ego or need to sub-toot (gossip?) there's no need to QT.
@simeon @stux @GilliJamtin
⬆️ This is what I've been doing, and it's been going great 🙂
@stux I think the biggest realization will actually be from investors. They saw that while social media can be profitable, it doesn't have to be. I think that they initial thought was there aren't enough spaces with engage for the Twitter users to go and they didn't expect the Exodus. What they didn't realize is that if we all leave, we get to have similar experiences.
@stux Good stuff. Next request, end-to-encryption please.
@stux @NorthEastOne of publicly accessible posts? Or are you talking about something else?
@stux Might finally be the making of Flickr!
@stux Hopefully it will stay open. There´ve been too many examples in the past where bigger platforms disabled or deleted open protocols.
@stux Excellent! I've been asking #SmugMug support for better Mastodon support. (SmugMug owns Flickr).
@stux OK. Any project can implement #ActivityPub and join the #fediverse. But do you really think that federating with #CorpoMedia such as Tumblr or Flickr will be a step towards a privacy-friendly federation? Millions of their users will of course benefit from federation, but I don't expect these companies to change anything in their privacy policies. So by visiting their sites (through accounts with fediverse) they will collect data about us as they do so far.
@miklo @stux Very well said. That's what I fear as well. Tumblr and Flickr should indeed go open-source to rule out this concern.
@4081 @stux I don't think any of these existing corpo-platforms , which have hundreds of millions of accounts, will ever open anything more than front-end or mobile apps etc. (as Telegram has done). That is, if they join #fediverse it will be in the form of one big instance which in itself will be a negation of the main idea of federation i.e. #decentralisation.
@stux @miklo That would be my concern too, though I like a platform such as Tumblr.
@stux I believe we are experiencing the beginning of the real Web 3.0 — the breaking down of the corporately owned, walled-garden social media platforms — giving way to independent, decentralized platforms that interconnect with each other smoothly and seamlessly. It’s like when AOL gave way to the internet — and we all know what happened thereafter.
@IrwinFletcher0 @stux I’ll put my old fart hat on here, but the feel and mood of what is happening with this movement reminds me of the internet in the 90’s. No corporate types, and the info requires a little bit of digging
@stephen @stux Yes, it kind of feels that way to me as well. We are going back to the future!
@stux Bravo!!! 👏 👏👏
@stux absolutely, I was sceptical at first, but the fediverse an eye opener
@stux I never deleted the Tumbler app. it’s been inactive for 7 years! I hope it works out.
@stux I am trying to get Vimeo & SoundCloud on board. I also asked YouTube as well, but I think they ignored my question (a passive no).
@darnell Oh that's a good idea! 💡   way to go mate!
@darnell @stux Nice! I’d like to get Bandcamp here as well. Will shoot them an email or Tweet.

@katherine_montalto @darnell Yes, you're right!

I wish I could use Funkwhale but I don't have a personal music library to upload. I've used Spotify since forever.

It's only recently that I discovered Bandcamp and started buying music (again).

Speaking of which... I should probably upload it to Funkwhale.

@stux I have a feeling the Musk individual will soon be just a humble millionaire - but what do I know about international commerce?
As #DorothyParker observed, "If you want to know what God thinks of money, just look at the people he gave it to" ...
@stux I guess it forced people to realise they were dwelling in a silo, and that no company or individual should have authority over social interactions.
#GoldeCageBeGone
@stux luv it! No billionaires needed!

@stux
> No billionaires needed ✅

But if it weren't for Musk, would it be the same right now? 🙂

I'm a new user. I think Elon Musk taking over Twitter probably has a silver lining to it. It's nice to get to know more people. I hope I can get more followers here :)
@stux inb4 one of them pulls the rug on #ActivityPub to replace it with a new, proprietary, protocol that they control because it's "better" and "supports their platform better". "Hey folks! #Tumblr is phasing out ActivityPub but register your instance for an API key here to integrate with us using our new protocol, [TumblPub?idk/c]".
Would it destroy #mastodon ? No. But it would put a significant divide in people coming from #TwitterMigration who would then funnel off to tumblr in the end.
@stux Why else would #tumblr be so quick to jump on the #ActivityPub bandwagon? How many platforms integrate with other, competing, platforms? If they jump in now, they will catch so much more of the crowd flocking from #twitter than #mastodon simply because of their existing reputation & status in social media. Then they can just pull out of the federation whenever they see fit.
@Rob @stux I know that’s a valid fear, but OTOH, Tumblr wants more users. So I think they’re reaching out to get them. I’ve hopes that alienating them later and losing them again is not their goal.

@Rob @stux I'd have to wonder if the community backlash of such an action would be worth it. On some date, half your feed goes away? People will be furious, but maybe some corporate money drone will figure out the loss and deem it "acceptable."

You raise a valid concern, it's definitely an interesting decision on their part and I'm curious as to how it'll play out.

@Rob
The current owners of Tumblr (Automattic) have also enabled ActivityPub support for WordPress. While it's possible that they might do such a thing as you describe, such an action would *very significantly* hurt the brand image they have cultivated, and unlike Twitter they are not run by an incompetent nitwit.
Plus, if more social media companies beside Tumblr join in, any one of them doing that would become harder to pull off.
@stux
@mathlover @stux well, let's think more generalized. I used #tumblr as more, an example, of what could happen of ANY corp getting involved. But I do think that #Automattic is a good one that would not intentionally exploit or cause harm to the community.. but how many out there would? What can the community do as a whole to discourage it & make it not worth their while?
@Rob
That's a good question. I'll have to think about that. I'm pretty sure there are some things I and others can come up with, and I wouldn't be surprised if others have discussed this as well.
@stux
@mathlover @stux I'm fairly certain there must be similar discussion. I've seen quite a bit about whether brands should have accounts here. omg could you imagine... talking to your #instagram friend through #tumblr in a group dm with a buddy on #flickr? This seems pretty weird..
@mathlover @stux I just want to note that I do notice some slight attention deficiency in that toot.... notably the big shift in topic halfway through.
It's like I was typing a thought then got really excited about another thought.
@Rob
Heh.
I'm tired and haven't had caffeine. ADHD doesn't help.
@stux
@stux I didn’t know Flickr was planning to add ActivityPub before seeing this post! That’s really cool!
@stux millionaires are no different than billionaires.
@stux I'm brand new here, what's the fediverse?

@stux I just reported the Twitter app to the Play Store for hateful content. Others are reporting it at the Apple App Store.

I also (yesterday) left a one-star review at the Play Store where I did not mince words. (It’s just a couple sentences, mind you, not a screed.)

@stux Flickr would be nice because it would put my high resolution type specimen scans into the Fediverse.

Also because it’s full of photos, of course.

Tumblr is full of photos and other content so also very nice to have.

@chemoelectric @stux Elon devalued Tesla by $600 BIL & Lost $34 BIL over paying for TWITTER

Elon gave GM & FORD & VW & BMW & Toyota & HONDA & even Commuter Cars a magic Christmas present by leading TESLA motors to be sold (see historic TUCKER motors)

Loan to buy Twitter has an annual interest payment of $1 BIL
Twitter past revenue = $700 MIL

Using Rocket Science Math which turns out to be much less complex than Social Media Congrnt Moderation math give a minus $300 MIL

@TR @stux But Musk is enjoying making people dance in front of him. That’s now your job description.

@TR @stux And user description, too.

I noticed Nate Silver is enjoying watching that forced dancing, too.

@stux @stux great news! But, remember, not all billionaires are bad though Stux.
@stux I suppose Tumblr connecting to the Fediverse makes sense. It gives me the same cozy feeling!
