Tonight I finished @maddow’s new podcast Ultra. This powerful warning shot, this unearthing of the threat of American facism in the 30s& 40s is required learning for this moment. There has been a dress rehearsal for what we are facing. We’d best learn. I strongly encourage you to listen to all 8 episodes. The parallels are stunning. A reminder that we’ve fought this before. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/rachel-maddow-presents-ultra/id1647910854?i=1000586931428

@ifilljustice thank you for the rec. I’m at episode 4 and will keep going!
@ifilljustice It's mind-blowing!! The parallels to current troubling trends & events are eerie.
@ifilljustice it’s truly excellent, and timely. It feels as if it should be common knowledge but it was new to me and probably the vast majority because it cuts against the myth of a nation united against fascism.

@ifilljustice

Yep. It's so informative.
Emily Bazelon commented on the current use of "America First" & its relationship to the 30s/40s on Political Gabfest back at the beginning of the Trump insanity. It was the first thing that came to my mind as I listened to Maddow's conclusion. Wonder how many others made that connection back then.

The current situation is very, very dangerous for all of us.

@RedCanoe @ifilljustice halfway through it and it's almost been a checklist of current political threats. Very interesting stuff.
@ifilljustice
This is a a re-run, I swear.
@ifilljustice Thanks for sharing about this series. Ken Burns'/PBS' "The U.S. and the Holocaust" is similarly informing.
@ifilljustice I watched her show today. It was a long commercial for the podcast. Tired of hearing "news" about RM's podcasts.
@ifilljustice I'm so happy I found you on Mastodon. You were one of my favorite people to follow on Twitter.
@ifilljustice the entire 8 episodes were astonishing. They don’t teach you about this part of our history in school! Everyone should tune in to this one.
@slope74 @ifilljustice
I remember being taught about “Manifest Destiny” in elementary school.
I also remember thinking: “This doesn’t sound like a good thing”.
@ifilljustice @PJLavatai we were probably old enough to think it sounded aggressive, but not quite old enough to fully understand the racist and Christofascist underpinnings of the doctrine.
@slope74 @ifilljustice
I may have had a less indoctrinated perspective because I was not raised religious, never went to Church. Pretty sure both my parents were agnostic. They also travelled a lot and had a wider worldview. I am thankful for that.
@slope74 @ifilljustice
I never went to church as a child. In my later years I was “saved”, became a member of the church board, treasurer, teacher, an Christian Apologist.
Well rounded, I suppose.
@ifilljustice what an excellent podcast. Truly gripping storytelling. Amazing how familiar it sounds. Scary how folks like this can hude behind chaos to prevent justice. Very familiar story!#Ultra

@ifilljustice

Have to ask in advance: Does this history have any critical angle on corporate power? I am sick to death of the inane punting, esp from MSNBC.

@ifilljustice This sounds fascinating!
@ifilljustice Waiting til daylight to listen to Ep 8. I wouldn’t be able to sleep if I listen tonight. It’s 🤯 and the parallels to now are sickening. 🙏🏼 by the end of 8, there will be a glimmer of hope, though I know it’s not for us to just hope. We have to keep fighting/working against bigotry and fascism to protect people and uphold our democracy. It’s astounding to me that we’re in this moment, but here we are. Grateful, Ms Ifill, for your brilliance and commitment to justice.
@ifilljustice It’s about history that I was never taught in school, and it’s very much about today.
@ifilljustice I can’t believe this podcast is the first time 99% of us are hearing this story. Astonishing to see how high into the USGOVT this went, both the participants and those who covered it up.
@ifilljustice they say every 80 to 100 years history repeats itself. #CircularHistory. Hopefully this time we have done our lesson and when the time of trial comes we will stand up for democracy and human rights.
@ifilljustice I finished today too. I’m amazed we (I) didn’t know this history already, but also at how I can see current people modeling their behavior after some of these characters like they most certainly knew this history… and celebrate it. Ugh.
@ifilljustice Thank you. Can’t wait to check this out.
@ifilljustice Terrifying to think that the DOJ won't necessarily be able to resist outside pressure. Garland doesn't strike me as a strong character.
@ifilljustice yes we did. But the has been a dumbing down of America for the last 40+ years and we the people are not able to agree in large enough numbers to affect change.
@ifilljustice just finished it as well and was stunned how closely today parallels the 1940s. And how few historians are aware of this dark history. Absolutely astonishing. Maddow is a master storyteller.
@ifilljustice yes the parallels are almost uncanny but unfortunately one thing we also have are algorithmically driven social media echo chambers owned and operated by billionaires/corporations along with 24x7 cable news channels that are being rewarded to flood the world with disinformation. Let’s hope we can meet this challenge as well…
@ifilljustice completely agree. Should be required listening. I sincerely hope we can use it as a roadmap to begin to find our way out of this mess.
@BethBramble @ifilljustice The courtroom drama in the “Bedlam” episode was unbelievable. A total mockery of the justice system in so many ways.
@ifilljustice This is an amazing podcast; everyone should give it a listen.
@ifilljustice it really is brilliant. Dr. Maddow always does her research and presents it in a way that we can understand.
@ifilljustice I listened to this after having listened to Bagman. Both provided me a view into a moment in our history I was not aware of. Both provide examples of unknown people fighting against corruption and fascism. Rachel's work is fantastic
@ifilljustice it’s scary and fantastic. Combine this with @MeidasTouch #PsyOp podcast and a real understanding comes into focus.
@ifilljustice Thank you for the recommendation. I like her work.
@ifilljustice Not many people realize this about America in the 30’s and 40’s. The were open NAZI Rallies in Brooklyn.

@ifilljustice

I'd also recommend reading Thomas Zimmer (@[email protected]) on the bird app for a very clear take on our current rise of the white, Christian, patriarchal right.

He's a visiting professor at Georgetown.

@ifilljustice Yes - I feel the same way. I finished the last episode this morning and just sat stunned for a few minutes. Very powerful and important.
@ifilljustice will definitely be listening to it. Thanks.
@ifilljustice on ep 6 and the rhymes with our current times are startling

@ifilljustice I finished it yesterday as well. To me, Maddow method of telling a story is very reminiscent of Paul Harvey, unspooling the details in a way that is logical, enthralling and ultimately entertaining.

Surprisingly it gave me some comfort to know that our country has stared down similar threats to democracy in the past and come through intact. Like listening to Jon Meacham and Micheal Beschloss talk, always makes me feel better.

@ifilljustice I've listened to 2 episodes.. planning on finishing up this series this weekend! Looking forward to it. One of my fave things about Rachel is her storytelling and her reading of court docs :D Oh and that she cries sometimes.. her humanity makes me keep watching/following.
@ifilljustice finished it yesterday. Maddow’s podcasts are on the nose.
@ifilljustice I feel like “the silent generation” and older boomers like me (my sibs were born in the late 30’s) were too silent on the subject, or at least the majority were. “The Paranoid Style in American Politics” should have been required reading. Even that hose beast Bill Buckley told the Birchers to step off and let the quiet fascist do the talking.
@ifilljustice finished it today wow just wow
@ifilljustice as before, #RachelMaddow produced another blockbuster masterpiece with the #UltraPodcast
May I also mention a recently published book by #DavidCorn on the same historical theme, with the same urgent lessons for the times we live in? #AmericanPsychosis
I finished the book before listening to the podcast. They go perfectly together in creating an expansive and detailed picture of who and what #Republicans have always been and the danger they pose to a free, democratic America.
#GOP #fascism #ChristianEvangelicals #WhiteSupremacy
@ifilljustice “history repeats itself because no one listens the first time”

@ifilljustice I agree. Stunning! The parallel between then and now is unmistakable. Rachel is a masterful storyteller whose research and love of actual historical events makes us all smarter just for listening.
@ifilljustice I am listening to Maddows podcast at the moment in Australia and also find it a sobering warning for what may be if we are not vigilant.
